Peritoneal angiosarcoma in a patient with a history of cervical cancer treated with radiotherapy: A case report.

Angiosarcoma is a highly malignant endothelial neoplasm that accounts for 1-2% of all soft tissue sarcomas in humans, and its marked biological aggressiveness constitutes a major clinical challenge. Early identification is particularly difficult in patients with a history of malignancies treated with radiotherapy, due to its histopathological heterogeneity and nonspecific clinical presentation, which often leads to confusion with other mesenchymal or epithelial neoplasms. We report the case of a 72-year-old woman with a history of cervical carcinoma treated with radiotherapy who presented with

[Well differentiated papillary mesothelioma: description of three case reports and review of the literature].

Well Differentiated Papillary Mesothelioma (MPBD) is a very rare neoplasm that mainly affects women of reproductive age. The most common location is the peritoneum and it is an incidental finding, with a generally favorable prognosis. We present three cases diagnosed incidentally, in the course of a surgical intervention of various causes, which presented as peritoneal exophytic lesions not detected in the pre-surgical imaging study. It is important to keep this entity in mind, to differentiate it from other neoplasms with an unfavorable prognosis and evolution, such as Malignant Mesothelioma

True Incidence of Appendiceal Neoplasms in Patients Presenting with Complicated Appendicitis: A Call for a Revised Management Algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies suggest an association between complicated appendicitis and underlying appendiceal neoplasms, but the reported incidence varies widely. This study aimed to determine the incidence and predictors of appendiceal neoplasms among patients with radiographically diagnosed complicated appendicitis. METHODS: This study analyzed adult patients with radiologic diagnoses of complicated appendicitis (perforation, abscess, phlegmon, gangrene, or mucocele) at a tertiary center (2010-2024). To ensure diagnostic accuracy, an expert surgeon reviewed radiologic images with uncertain f

Critical reappraisal of prognostic indicators for 949 mucinous appendiceal neoplasm patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The standard of care for treatment of an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with peritoneal dissemination is cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). These two treatments are combined in the operating room. A crucial requirement for benefit long-term is proper patient selection. Clinical and histopathologic prognostic indicators are used, along with the patient's fitness for surgery, to select patients to receive CRS and HIPEC. METHODS: This study seeks to identify the reliable prognostic indicators for four different g

Outcomes and prognostic factors of cytoreductive surgery and perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy in high-volume peritoneal carcinomatosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The management of patients with extensive appendiceal mucinous neoplasms and mesothelioma is controversial. Our aims were to analyze overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and independent prognostic factors associated with high peritoneal cancer index (PCI) status in patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (PIC). METHODS: A prospectively-maintained database for patients with appendiceal neoplasms and mesothelioma undergoing CRS/PIC from year 1996 to 2018 was retrospectively analyzed. Patients who

A Rare Case of Solitary Fibrous Tumor Originating in the Peritoneum: Clinical and Histopathological Insights.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that most commonly arise from the pleura, with peritoneal origin being exceptionally uncommon. We report a case of a 51-year-old male who presented with a large abdominal mass, subsequently diagnosed as a solitary fibrous tumor originating from the peritoneum. Radiological evaluation revealed a well-defined mass with a vascular pedicle supplied by the inferior mesenteric artery, extending from the pelvis to the lower abdomen. Surgical resection of the tumor, including part of the rectosigmoid junction was performed and histopatholog

Sonographic detection of peritoneal carcinomatosis: a prospective study of 37 cases.

BACKGROUND: The use of sonography as an accurate modality to detect peritoneal carcinomatosis in patients with or without known malignancy was investigated. METHODS: Using ultrasound, we prospectively diagnosed peritoneal carcinomatosis in 37 patients. Findings such as liver metastases, adenomegalies, ascites and gallbladder wall thickness were first assessed. Then high resolution sonography detected omental, mesenteric, serosal and peritoneal involvement, the latter presenting as a nodule or an interruption of the anterior hyperechoic peritoneal line. Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: a case series.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms, including low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs), are infrequent but clinically relevant due to their potential progression to pseudomyxoma peritonei. Timely diagnosis and surgical intervention are critical to preventing complications. We present a case series of three middle-aged men with LAMNs, each of whom exhibited right lower quadrant abdominal pain as their primary symptom. Diagnostic imaging in each case revealed features consistent with appendiceal mucoceles. Pathological findings confirmed LAMN, with varying extents of disease. One patient und

Imaging of haemodialysis: renal and extrarenal findings.

Electrolyte alterations and extra-renal disorders are quite frequent in patients undergoing haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. The native kidneys may be the site of important pathologies in patients undergoing dialysis, especially in the form of acquired renal cystic disease with frequent malignant transformation. Renal neoplasms represents an important complication of haemodialysis-associated acquired cystic kidney disease and imaging surveillance is suggested. Extra-renal complications include renal osteodistrophy, brown tumours, and thoracic and cardiovascular complications. Other import

Significance of epithelial cell clusters in pseudomyxoma peritonei.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinical syndrome characterised by distension of the peritoneum by jelly-like ascites. Cytological evaluation of peritoneal fluid is often an initial diagnostic test for possible ovarian and/or appendiceal primary tumours. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The present work was conducted to study the usefulness of peritoneal fluid cytomorphology in the early diagnosis of PMP and to evaluate the significance of the presence of epithelial cell (EC) clusters and their prognostic implications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the detailed cytological featu

Burkitt's lymphoma of the appendix presented with acute appendicitis and ascites.

Primary appendiceal lymphoma is a rare malignancy, often of the Burkitt subtype, and may present as acute appendicitis. We report a 6-year-old boy with abdominal pain, distension, fever, and a palpable right lower quadrant mass. Laboratory tests showed leukocytosis and hyperkalemia. Abdominopelvic computed tomography revealed an enlarged appendix, moderate ascites, and peritoneal thickening, findings that could be mistaken for perforated appendicitis with an underlying neoplasm and tumor lysis syndrome. Emergency laparoscopic appendectomy with peritoneal drainage was performed. Histopathology

FDG PET/CT in follicular dendritic cell sarcoma with extensive peritoneal involvement.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm that originates from follicular dendritic cells. A 33-year-old woman was referred because of a 2-month history of lower abdominal fullness. Enhanced T1-weighted MR images showed enhancement of the thickened pelvic peritoneum. FDG PET/CT was performed showing multiple FDG-avid lymph nodes in the parapharyngeal, bilateral supraclavicular, left axillary, mediastinal, and abdominal regions, and intense FDG uptake in the thickened mesentery and peritoneum. Pathologic findings of both the left supraclavicular lymph node and peritoneal biops

Postoperative peritoneal cysts.

Peritoneal cysts are an infrequent postoperative complication. Few cases have been reported in the literature. This paper presents four cases seen after gynecologic operations. The cysts occurred 1.5 to 8 months postoperatively. The patients presented with pain and a large pelvic mass. No patient showed clinical or laboratory evidence of acute inflammation. Ovarian neoplasm was the leading diagnosis in three cases; the correct preoperative diagnosis of peritoneal cyst was made in only one case. Three patients were managed successfully with resection. One patient was treated with percutaneous d

Ovarian mature teratomas with mucinous epithelial neoplasms: morphologic heterogeneity and association with pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Mucinous epithelial neoplasms arising in association with mature teratomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors, but with the exception of a single recent study, their full histologic spectrum, detailed immunophenotype, and association with classic pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) have not been fully studied. The morphologic, immunohistochemical, and clinical features of 42 patients with mucinous epithelial tumors arising in association with mature ovarian teratomas were evaluated. The patients' ages ranged from 17 to 66 years (mean, 39 y). Tumor size ranged from 5.5 to greater than 200 cm. Most te

[Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma. A case report].

Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare malignancy with unknown etiology, first described in 1980, which have been reported to date about 150 cases in the literature. Although the term "benign", used mainly to distinguish it from the classic malignant mesothelioma, a more aggressive cancer, is considered "borderline" in terms of aggression: it tends to local recurrence but cases of lymph node metastases or in other locations at a distance are not described. The symptoms are often vague and nonspecific (abdominal pain, enlarged abdomen and ascites). The common diagnostic imaging te

Primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ileum.

A laparotomy was performed on a 67-year-old woman with a provisional diagnosis of intestinal obstruction from a primary small bowel carcinoma. A pathological examination showed a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ileum, with no regional lymph node metastases. There was no evidence of any other abnormality in the peritoneal cavity. Ten years after the operation, an abdominal computed tomography scan showed a recurrent tumor in the peritoneal cavity. Primary small bowel adenocarcinoma is rare in all malignant gastrointestinal neoplasms, and very few cases of the ileal mucinous adenocarcinoma have b

Translocation (3;3)(p14;q29) as the primary chromosome abnormality in a peritoneal mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare malignant neoplasm arising from the serosal lining of the pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial cavities. Mesotheliomas are known to be associated with asbestos exposure. The karyotypes of these tumors have mostly been so complex as to preclude the identification of primary chromosome abnormalities. We present the cytogenetic analysis of two macroscopically distinct abdominal tumors, both diagnosed as peritoneal mesothelioma, occurring in a woman with a history of heavy asbestos exposure. Both tumors contained the same three karyotypically abnormal but cytogene

Peritoneal Carcinomatosis in an Adult With Sjögren's Syndrome: A Diagnostic Dilemma Revealing a Rare Association With Primary Gastric Adenocarcinoma.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a systemic autoimmune disease that mainly affects middle-aged women. It is rarely associated with solid neoplasms. We report a 60-year-old woman with a past medical history relevant for SS who was diagnosed with advanced-stage gastric adenocarcinoma upon evaluating for peritoneal carcinomatosis and succumbed two months after her original diagnosis. This case highlights the significance of considering gastrointestinal (GI) malignancy as an essential differential, particularly when evaluating patients with SS who fail conservative treatment for their GI symptoms.

Malignant transformation in non-recurrent peritoneal cystic mesothelioma Our experience and review of the literature.

AIM: Cystic peritoneal mesothelioma is commonly regarded as a benign neoplasm at its first manifestation. It can only seldom show malignant transformation, and only after repeated postoperative recurrences. MATERIAL OF STUDY: We hereby represent a unique case of peritoneal cystic mesothelioma, malignant since its first presentation. We observed a 73 year-old man presenting with intermittent abdominal pain and periumbilical swelling. At surgery, we found an extensive, oval-shaped, multi-lobed cystic formation that was surgically removed. RESULTS: Histopathology was consistent with a malignant
