Multiloculated Ciliary Body Cysts and Lenticular Coloboma: A Rare Phenotypic Variation Associated With Persistent Fetal Vasculature.

A case of a 4 year-old boy with persistent fetal vasculature, lenticular coloboma, and a benign, multiloculated ciliary body mass is reviewed. The presence of ciliary body cysts in association with persistent fetal vasculature is sparsely reported. Its presence in a child can cause a diagnostic dilemma and lead to amblyopia. A developmental defect in astrocytes inhibits programmed regression of the hyaloid vasculature in the mammalian eye.

Previously we reported the novel observation that astrocytes ensheath the persistent hyaloid artery, both in the Nuc1 spontaneous mutant rat, and in human PFV (persistent fetal vasculature) disease (Developmental Dynamics 234:36-47, 2005). We now show that astrocytes isolated from both the optic nerve and retina of Nuc1 rats migrate faster than wild type astrocytes. Aquaporin 4 (AQP4), the major water channel in astrocytes, has been shown to be important in astrocyte migration. We demonstrate that AQP4 expression is elevated in the astrocytes in PFV conditions, and we hypothesize that this cau

Multiple ocular anomalies associated with maternal LSD ingestion.

Severe ocular malformations, including microphthalmos, intraocular cartilage, cataract, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, and retinal dysplasia, occurred in a premature baby girl. The mother had ingested LSD during the first trimester of pregnancy. To our knowledge, this is the third case reported of ocular teratogenesis associated with maternal LSD ingestion. Further cases must be documented to establish an actual cause and effect relationship between the drug and the induced malformations.

Clinical Classification and Management Outcomes of Anterior Segment-Dominated Persistent Fetal Vasculature: The CCPMOH Report.

PURPOSE: To describe clinical features, management, and outcomes of anterior segment-dominated persistent fetal vasculature (aPFV). DESIGN: A secondary analysis of aPFV data from a longitudinal cohort study. METHODS: The age and gender of each participant upon initial presentation, along with biological parameters, best-corrected visual acuity, and biomicroscopic assessments were collected. The aPFV eyes were categorized into 3 groups (type I: pupillary-iris-anterior lens plane, type II: retrolental-anterior hyaloid membrane plane, and type III: combined) according to the location of the vas

Uncommon cause of juvenile cataract: adenoma of the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium.

Adenoma of the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium developed in a 36-year-old woman, causing decreased visual acuity and a total cataract in the involved eye. Ultrasound biomicroscopy disclosed associated persistent hyperplasic primary vitreous (PHPV). Sectoral cyclectomy with removal of the mass and intracapsular cataract extraction were performed, and the tumor was submitted for histological examination. Although ciliary adenomas arising in adults are considered to be acquired, the associated PHPV suggests a congenital origin in view of the tumor's possible interference in the normal replacement

[Color Doppler imaging of persistent heperplastic primary vitreous].

PURPOSE: To evaluate Color Doppler Imaging (CDI) in the value of Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous(PHPV). METHODS: 3 cases (4 eyes) of PHPV were reproted and were examinated by high resolution CDI, the blood flow pattern was evaluated in basic of two dimensional grayscale image. RESULTS: CDI shows a band vascular structure coursing through the band-shaped moderately echogenic structure in the central portion of vitreous chamber, with the apex located near the optic disk and the base extending toward the lens. Spectral display of the Doppler signal indicated arterial flow. CONCLUSION:

[Complications after cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation in infants aged 1-12 months].

Postoperative complications after cataract extraction with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in infants aged 1-12 months were studied. 97 children (138 eyes) were examined and cataract was extracted with IOL implantation. The most severe complications were observed in children with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous syndrome, that requires development of methods and indications for surgery. Results of cataract surgery in infants depend on operator's experience in pediatric cavity surgery.

Incontinentia pigmenti associated with nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

A case is reported of a five-month-old female with incontinentia pigmenti associated with nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Ocular manifestations of incontinentia pigmenti have previously been described to include persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, retinal dysplasia, retrolental fibroplasia, corneal opacities, cataract, optic atrophy, and strabismus. This case is believed to be the first reported instance of incontinentia pigmenti associated with nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The management of this patient is also discussed.

Papillary Traction Due to the Posterior Form of a Bilateral Persistent Fetal Vasculature Mimicking Papilledema.

Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), or persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV), is a congenital developmental disorder characterized by a failure of resorption of the hyaloid system. It typically presents unilaterally and has three forms: anterior, posterior, and mixed. In this case report, a seven-year-old patient, without specific personal or family medical history, was referred from the pediatric department for bilateral papilledema. The patient had a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 (Logarithmic Measure of Angle of Resolution (LogMAR): 0) in both eyes. Fundus examination of bo

Diagnostic vitrectomy.

The histopathologic and cytopathologic study of ocular fluids obtained for diagnostic purposes is presented. The analysis of fluid specimens with millipore filter, celloidin bag-cell block, and transmission electron microscopy techniques has proved to be effective for establishing and confirming clinical diagnoses. Diagnostic vitrectomy can be readily used to evaluate such conditions as intraocular tumors, lens and blood-induced glaucoma, inflammatory conditions, amyloidosis, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV), epithelial ingrowth, and tractional vitreoretinal membranes.

Intra-ocular medulloepithelioma as a masquerade for PHPV and Panophthalmitis: a Diagnostic Dilemma.

A previously diagnosed child of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) with painless blind eye remained clinically silent for about 3 years follow-up. The child suddenly presented as a case of orbital cellulitis and panopthalmitis with meningitis. No definite mass lesion was detected on ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scan. Histopathology of the enucleated eye revealed intra-ocular medulloepithelioma as the culprit of sterile panophthalmitis and orbital inflammation.

Norrie's disease vs. PHPV: one family's dilemma.

This paper presents the numerous similarities between Norrie's disease and bilateral persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous. A description of each disease is given, as well as a case report which demonstrates the difficulty in distinguishing the two disease processes when there is a negative family history of blindness. A discussion section focuses on the need for a better differential protocol for Norrie's disease, which would aid the clinician when a family history of blindness is absent.

Autosomal recessive eye and brain anomalies: Warburg syndrome.

Two siblings are reported who appear to have an autosomal recessive disorder of eye and central nervous system anomalies. The findings in fourteen previously described and similarly affected patients are summarized. Ocular anomalies include microphthalmos, megalocornea, the Peter anomaly, cataract, coloboma, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, and retinal detachment with retinal dysplasia. Central nervous system malformations include agyria-pachygyria, cerebellar dysplasia, encephalocele, Dandy-Walker cyst, and hydrocephalus. We suggest that this disorder be known as Warburg syndrome.
