[Occupational Dermatoses in Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Narrative Review].

INTRODUCTION: On the 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus outbreak as a pandemic. Preventive measures such as the appropriate use of personal protective equipment and proper hand hygiene are essential in decreasing transmissibility. Healthcare workers have been required to wear personal protective equipment and to wash their hands even more frequently. These preventive measures are associated with an increased risk of skin conditions, namely, contact dermatitis and exacerbation of pre-existing skin lesions such as acne and seborrheic dermatitis. The aim

Epistaxis due to glutaraldehyde exposure.

Glutaraldehyde is commonly used as a cold disinfecting agent in the hospital setting and may cause irritation of skin, mucous membranes, and the upper respiratory tract in exposed workers. We report an unusual case of recurrent epistaxis associated with other symptoms of upper respiratory tract irritation and skin rash in a hospital employee using glutaraldehyde for sterilization of endoscopy equipment. A visit to the workplace revealed inadequate personal protective measures and inadequate local ventilation. High-risk work practices contributing to the hazard included soaking of endoscopy equ

Emergency upper gastrointestinal endoscopy performed safely in a patient with COVID-19 with suspected hemorrhagic shock.

Coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has spread explosively throughout the world and has since been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Although it is recommended that upper gastrointestinal endoscopies either be postponed or canceled during the pandemic because of their high risk of aerosol generation, this does not apply in emergency cases, which may include patients with coronavirus disease. In this case report, we describe the safe undertaking of an emergency upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in a patient with suspected hemorrh

Economic evaluation of interventions to reduce solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure among construction workers.

Solar ultraviolet radiation is one of the most common occupational carcinogens in Canada and is responsible for approximately 5,556 non-melanoma skin cancers per year. A large part of these cases are preventable by reducing solar ultraviolet radiation exposure. In this study, investigators estimated the potential economic impacts of different solar ultraviolet radiation reduction interventions among construction workers, as they are one of the largest at-risk occupational groups. Investigators performed an economic evaluation from a societal perspective, by comparing incremental costs in relat

Self-contamination risk and failure modes during high-level PPE doffing: A pilot comparison of 2 powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) hoods.

BACKGROUND: Personal protective equipment doffing protocols can reduce risks of pathogen self-contamination. Powered air-purifying respirators may increase these risks. This study compares viral contamination and errors during simulated doffing of single-layer versus double-layer hood powered air-purifying respirators. METHODS: Eight participants performed 2 simulations (video recorded for failure modes [FMs] and effects analysis): 1 single-layer hood (laid over Tyvek suit) and 1 double-layer hood (top laid over and bottom tucked into suit). Hoods were contaminated with viruses. After doffing

Prediction Model for Defects in Lead and Lead-free Aprons.

Personal radiation protective equipment (PRPE) is prone to defects in the attenuating layers, resulting in inadequate protection. Hence, quality control (QC) of PRPE is needed to assess its integrity. Unfortunately, QC of PRPE is laborious and time consuming. This study aimed to predict the QC outcome of PRPE without x-ray imaging based on readily available predictors. PRPE QC data of a general hospital from 2018 to 2023 was used for both prediction models based on logistic regression and random forests (RF). The data were divided into a training set containing all data from 2018 to 2022 and a

Update on Radiation Safety in the Cath Lab - Moving Toward a "Lead-Free" Environment.

Radiation exposure in the cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) is an occupational hazard that predisposes health care workers to the development of adverse health effects such as cataracts, cancer, and orthopedic injury. To mitigate radiation exposure, personal protective shielding as well as permanently installed shields reduces these adverse effects. Yet, heavy protective lead aprons and poor ergonomics required for positioning movable shields remain barriers to a safer environment. Recent innovations to enhance personal protective equipment and revolutionize fixed shielding systems will

Phantom study of a self-shielded X-ray bone age assessment instrument against scattered radiation in children.

Hand-wrist radiography is the most common and accurate method for evaluating children's bone age. To reduce the scattered radiation of radiosensitive organs in bone age assessment, we designed a small X-ray instrument with radioprotection function by adding metal enclosure for X-ray shielding. We used a phantom operator to compare the scattered radiation doses received by sensitive organs under three different protection scenarios (proposed instrument, radiation personal protective equipment, no protection). The proposed instrument showed greater reduction in the mean dose of a single exposure
