Advancing inclusive research with people with profound and multiple learning disabilities through a sensory-dialogical approach.

People with profound and multiple learning disabilities are often excluded from the processes of knowledge production and face barriers to inclusion in research due to cognitive and communicative challenges. Inclusive research-even when intending to be inclusive-tends to operate within criteria that exclude people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. The aim of this article is to provide a state-of-the-art review of the topic of inclusive research involving people with profound disabilities and thereby challenge traditional assumptions of inclusive research. The review presents th

Medicaid Enrollment and Service Use Among Adults With Down Syndrome.

IMPORTANCE: Down syndrome is the leading genetic cause of intellectual disability and automatically qualifies individuals for Social Security Insurance. Therefore, Medicaid is the major health insurance provider for a population at high risk for dementia, obesity, and premature mortality. Despite the importance of Medicaid for adults with Down syndrome, little is known about how this population uses Medicaid. OBJECTIVE: To describe enrollment in, health care use in, and cost to Medicaid for adults with Down syndrome compared with adults with intellectual disability and a random sample of adul

Early diagnosis of MECP2 duplication syndrome: Insights from a nationwide survey in Japan.

This study aimed to elucidate the clinical characteristics of MECP2 duplication syndrome (MDS), particularly at initial presentation, and to provide clinical clues for the early diagnosis of this condition. We conducted a nationwide survey for MDS by sending questionnaires to 575 hospitals where board-certified pediatric neurologists were working and 195 residential hospitals for persons with severe motor and intellectual disabilities in Japan. This survey found 65 cases of MDS, and clinical data of 24 cases in which the diagnosis was genetically confirmed were analyzed. More than half of the

Comparison of rating scales for the diagnosis of dementia in adults with Down's syndrome.

Making a diagnosis of dementia, particularly in its early stages, in a person with intellectual disability can be difficult Some neuropsychological tests which were originally devised for the diagnosis of dementia in the non-intellectually disabled population have been modified for use in people with intellectual disability. Observer-rated scales have also been used for making a diagnosis of dementia in people with intellectual disability. Within the context of a genetic study, the rates of diagnosis of dementia according to different criteria, namely the clinician's diagnosis (ICD-10), the De

Prevalence and correlates of postsecondary residential status among young adults with an autism spectrum disorder.

This study examined the prevalence and correlates of three living arrangements (with a parent or guardian, independently or with a roommate, or in a supervised setting) among a nationally representative sample of postsecondary young adults with an autism spectrum disorder. We assessed living arrangements since leaving high school. Compared with young adults with other disability types (learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or emotional disturbances), those with an autism spectrum disorder were more likely to have lived with a parent or guardian and least likely ever to have lived i

The Meaning of Ageing and the Educational Intervention "Good Life in Old Age": An Ethnographic Study Reflecting the Perspective of Older Adults with Mild Intellectual Disability.

Older adults with intellectual disabilities are not adequately prepared for ageing and show anxiety and uncertainty regarding the future. Therefore, the two-year educational intervention "Good Life in Old Age" was implemented to improve their understanding of ageing and enhance their well-being. This study aimed to explore the meaning of ageing during and after the intervention from the perspective of older adults with mild intellectual disability. The ethnographic design included participant observations, field notes, group interviews, and individual follow-up interviews with 20 adults aged 4

The age-related incidences of oesophageal carcinoma in intellectually disabled individuals in institutes in The Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: An increased age-related incidence of oesophageal cancer in people with intellectual disability has been suggested by studies in the Netherlands. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), as documented by pH testing, occurs frequently in the intellectually disabled population, being found in nearly 50% of those with an IQ less than 50, while Barrett's oesophagus is found in about 15-26%. DESIGN: We compared the age-related incidence of oesophageal cancer in institutionalized, intellectually disabled individuals in the Netherlands with the age-related incidence in the general Dutch

Service-Learning and Students With Severe Disabilities: Examining Participation and Curricular Goals.

The purpose of this case study was to examine how students with severe disabilities participated in service-learning at a food pantry and the curricular goals they addressed. Service-learning is a form of experiential learning that blends classroom instruction with community service. Participants included 3 high school students with severe disabilities enrolled in a private faith-based school, 5 school staff, and the food pantry coordinator. Data were collected over a 6-month period from observations, interviews, and a focus group. Findings indicate students partially participated in service-l

Sterilization of those with intellectual disability: Evolution from non-consensual interventions to strict safeguards.

Non-consensual sterilization is one of the characteristic historical abuses that took place mainly in the first half of the 20th century. People with intellectual disability (ID) were a prime target as part of the ideology of negative eugenics. In certain jurisdictions, laws were in force for several decades that permitted sterilization without the need for consent or with consent from third parties. The long-term adverse effects on those sterilized against their will have only more recently been recognized. In the latter half of the 20th century, human rights treaties were introduced and deve

Effects of premeal chewing on ruminative behavior.

The role of oropharyngeal stimulation (in the form of chewing) on the frequency of ruminating by institutionalized mentally retarded persons was examined. Chewing before meals reduced the rate of postmeal ruminating. Several procedures that might produce clinically significant decreases in ruminating were suggested.

Logographic reading by TMR adults.

Ten moderately retarded adults learned a set of 16 logographic signs. Subjects were asked to demonstrate sentences formed from the signs using dolls and other toys. They were also asked to pick out signs and form a sentence after watching the experimenter demonstrate an event. All subjects were able to demonstrate sentences with only minor errors. Only about half were completely successful in constructing four- and five-word sentences. The method of construction of most subjects revealed a semantic--syntactic disengagement; the signs were chosen in nonsentence order, apparently in order of sal

Intellectual disabilities and child psychiatry: looking to the future.

We begin this article by examining the role of intellectual disabilities within child psychiatry, highlighting the relatively steady role of disabilities and the recent movement to examine behavior in specific genetic syndromes. We next propose five questions for future work. Questions relate to (1) specifying the nature of gene-brain-behavior connections; (2) delineating environmental effects and gene-environment interactions; (3) understanding behaviors, physical characteristics, health issues, and other personal characteristics by which children with intellectual disabilities influence othe

[Schooling and care of mild intellectual disability children].

Studies on mild intellectual disability (MID) are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the educational and medical care trajectories and their determinants in children with MID. The study population concerned children born in 1997 and resident in a French county (Isère) in 2008. MID was defined as an overall IQ score between 50 and 69. For the present study, this definition was adjusted by integrating the IQ confidence intervals so that the risk of IQ measurement relativity and possible score discrepancy could be taken into account. Of the 267 children included, 180 (67%) were identif
