A comparative study of depressive symptomatology among cataract and age-related macular degeneration patients with impaired vision.

Vision impairment remains an important cause of disability with the leading being age-related cataract (ARC) and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) with depression symptoms often reported in vision impairment. This is a cross-sectional survey of two groups of fifty patients with ARC and ARMD and no prior psychiatric history on depressive symptomatology. Results indicate that ARMD patients scored higher on the BDI-II than ARC patients, in line with their poorer prognosis. Female patients with ARMD, living alone, with a higher number of other comorbid health issues, are more likely to have

Cross-cultural variation in mental health at end of life in patients with ALS.

OBJECTIVE: To examine mental health at the end of life among patients with ALS in three countries: Israel, Germany, and the United States. METHODS: Patients met criteria for definite or probable ALS and had forced vital capacity (FVC) <60% of predicted. Patients completed nonsomatic items from the Beck Depression Inventory and visual analogue scale ratings. RESULTS: The three sites contributed a total of 92 patients; 60 died during follow-up. Patients at the three sites did not differ significantly in sociodemographic features or ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised summary disability score;

Abdominal emergencies.

This brief review of abdominal emergencies is by no means encyclopedic. Indeed, it simply reflects the multiplicity of problems that can occur and suggests the need for a high index of suspicion and an optimistic attitude toward their solution. In addition, the surgeon must keep in mind the fact that cancer patients may also suffer acute abdominal distress from extra-abdominal causes such as pneumonia, myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, and hematologic abnormalities such as porphyria or sickle cell anemia. Inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic inflammatory disease, acute hepatitis or other

Why are women more fatigued than men? The roles of stress, sleep, and repetitive negative thinking.

Fatigue, a state of prolonged tiredness that cannot be alleviated through rest, is twice as likely to affect women than men. To account for women's higher rates of fatigue, we examined three factors which have both exhibited consistent sex differences in the literature and have been linked to fatigue: stress, sleep, and repetitive negative thinking (RNT). In the first study, 193 undergraduate students reported their levels of fatigue, stress, sleep quality and RNT over the past month. Mediation analysis showed that the effect of sex on fatigue was partially mediated through stress, sleep, and

Repetitive negative thinking in OCD: Evaluation of novel scenarios for cognitive bias modification training.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests that repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is underpinned by interpretation bias which is heightened among individuals with OCD. Cognitive bias modification for interpretation training (CBM-I) may reduce RNT by modifying interpretation bias which could reduce OCD symptoms. This study evaluated novel scenarios in terms of appropriateness and validity for use in a future CBM-I study targeting OCD-related RNT. This included analysis of the associations between interpretation bias and OCD symptoms, RNT, and OCD-specific rumination, respectively. METHODS:

Reducing worry and rumination in young adults via a mobile phone app: study protocol of the ECoWeB (Emotional Competence for Well-Being in Young Adults) randomised controlled trial focused on repetitive negative thinking.

BACKGROUND: Promoting well-being and preventing poor mental health in young people is a major global priority. Building emotional competence skills via a mobile app may be an effective, scalable and acceptable way to do this. A particular risk factor for anxiety and depression is elevated worry and rumination (repetitive negative thinking, RNT). An app designed to reduce RNT may prevent future incidence of depression and anxiety. METHOD/DESIGN: The Emotional Competence for Well-Being in Young Adults study developed an emotional competence app to be tested via randomised controlled trials in a

Responses to affect subtypes differentially associate with anxious and depressive symptom severity.

Responses to affect include cognitive processes (i.e., perseverative vs. non-perseverative) and valence (i.e., modulation of positive vs. negative affect). However, little research has examined how the factor structure of responses to affect is defined along one or both of these dimensions. The present study conducted an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of items from assessments of repetitive negative thinking, rumination on positive affect (PA), and dampening. We also examined the associations between emergent factors and measures of depressive symptoms, social anxiety symptoms, and non-soci

Gender differences in avoidance and repetitive negative thinking following symptom provocation in men and women with spider phobia.

OBJECTIVES: Women's greater prevalence of anxiety disorders compared to men is widely assumed to be partly due to gender differences in cognitive and behavioural factors that perpetuate anxiety, such as repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and avoidance. However, past studies assessing this assumption have not controlled for gender differences in baseline symptom severity, the type of stressful life experiences against which RNT and avoidance are measured, or emotional reactivity to these experiences. DESIGN: Using a two-group design, the present study controlled for these confounds by comparin

Early maladaptive schemas in convicted sexual offenders: preliminary findings.

Core cognitive schemas may play a role in the vulnerability for sexual offending. Identifying these schemas could help to conceptualize sexual crimes and rehabilitate convicted sexual offenders. The aim of this preliminary study was to explore the relationship between early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and sexual offending, as well as how rapists and child sex molesters differ in terms of these schemas. Thirty-two men convicted for rape, 33 convicted for child sexual abuse, and 30 non-offenders were evaluated using the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3) and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). Re

"The Computer as a Sophisticated Disguise of the Devil" : Supposed Technophobia in German-Speaking Protestant Churches towards Electronic Data Processing (EDP).

Christian churches are sometimes perceived as being hostile towards technology due to the supposed incompatibility of the cold, rational world of technology and the warm, humane organization of the church. Even when electronic data processing (EDP) was introduced in German-speaking Protestant churches in Western Europe, a lack of acceptance of technology was repeatedly problematized by church digitization pioneers as a central hurdle in church digitization processes. According to them, the "synchronization" (David Gugerli) of church and computer was therefore to prove particularly prone to con

Theories of psychopathology: Introduction to a special section.

This special section on theories of psychopathology provides an opportunity to collect the emergent, cross-cutting scholarship that is challenging traditional approaches to understanding mental illness. Here, we appraise the state of theory in the field and emphasize the pitfalls of working in the context of overly flexible, unchallenged, and essentially unchallengeable theoretic models, such as the biopsychosocial model, which we argue has become the de facto theoretic model for our field. We further posit that theoretic shortcomings are contributing to the often-referenced pessimism regardin

Estrogen therapies, lipids, and the heart disease prevention controversy.

One of the most highly unexpected reports in recent medical literature was the lack of benefit of estrogen-progestin replacement therapy in cardiovascular disease prevention in postmenopausal women. The ensuing negative view of hormone replacement therapy has now extended to all forms of postmenopausal hormone treatment, including estrogen alone. Is this pessimism justified? A review of the effects of estrogens and progestins on the estrogen-sensitive systems of the body can help explain why combined oral estrogen and low-dose continuous medroxyprogesterone acetate administration may not be th

Repetitive negative thinking, self-reflection, and perceived cognitive dysfunction in older adults: a cross-sectional study.

As the global population ages, understanding cognitive dysfunction, including Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia, is crucial. With the growing prevalence of these disorders, it is essential to identify and understand potential factors that maintain cognitive function and potentially delay severe cognitive dysfunction. This study examined the roles of repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and reflection in subjective cognitive dysfunction among older adults, with an additional consideration of their association with depressive symptoms. RNT, which is common in depression, has been ass

The impact of rumination and anhedonia on daily social and occupational function.

INTRODUCTION: Rumination (repetitive negative thinking; RNT) and anhedonia are hallmark features of depression and other psychiatric disorders known for their association with executive functioning. However, limited work has directly evaluated associations between these indices and their potential contribution to impairments in social and occupational function. This study investigated cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between RNT and anhedonia with functional outcomes at 6- and 12-months among individuals with elevated depression or anxiety symptoms. METHOD: Participants (N = 92,

Worry and rumination: do they prolong physiological and affective recovery from stress?

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression have been linked to repetitive negative self-regulation styles in the form of worry and rumination respectively. Following predictions of the metacognitive model [Wells, A., & Matthews, G. (1994). Attention and emotion: A clinical perspective. Hove: Erlbaum], the current study compared the effect on recovery from stress of three strategies: worry, rumination, and distraction using a stress exposure paradigm. It was predicted that worry and/or rumination would be associated with delayed recovery on physiological and/or self-report indices when compared to dist

Factors Influencing Isolation Behavior of Dogs: A Holder-Based Questionnaire and Behavioral and Saliva Cortisol Responses during Separation.

This study examined how separation behavior differs between dogs with and without separation-related problem behavior (SRB) and the possible risk factors. The study consisted of an online survey with 940 dog holders, which, in addition to demographic facts, also includes personality, emotional disposition and the attachment by the holder. Furthermore, a separation test was carried out with six non-SRB dogs over a maximum of 6 h, in which behavior and cortisol were determined. The questionnaire revealed that SRB dogs differed significantly from non-SRB dogs regarding the following factors: symp

Effects of two treatments on interpersonal, affective, and lifestyle features of psychopathy and emotion dysregulation.

This study investigated the relative efficacy of Mentalization-based therapy (MBT) and United Protocol (UP) in reducing symptoms of psychopathy and emotion dysregulation in a sample of Iranian community residents with concurrent diagnoses of antisocial and borderline personality disorders (PDs). Interpersonal, affective, and lifestyle features of psychopathy were measured post-treatment and at 6-, 12-, 18-, 24-, and 36-months follow-up using the 13-item version of the Psychopathy Revised-Checklist (PCL-R), which excluded, by design, criminal history features. Emotion dysregulation was measured

Neuropsychological intervention of dyslexia has a positive effect on aspects of psychological well-being in young adults - a randomized controlled study.

Effectiveness of individual- and group-based neuropsychological intervention on aspects of psychological well-being of dyslexic adults was evaluated. Dyslexic young adults (n = 120) were randomly assigned into individual intervention, group intervention or wait-list control group. Both interventions focussed on cognitive strategy learning, supporting self-esteem, and using psychoeducation. In group format peer support was also utilized. Cognitive and behavioural strategies, mood states, quality of life and self-esteem were assessed via self-report questionnaires at baseline, after the interven

Parents' conceptualization of adolescents' mental health problems: who adopts a psychiatric perspective and does it make a difference?

How parents give meaning to the problems of adolescents diagnosed with mental disorders and receiving treatment is likely related to important outcomes including parental well-being and commitment to treatment, as well as their own behaviors and reactions to their child. The aim of this cross-sectional, mixed-method study of 70 parents of adolescents receiving wraparound mental health services is to examine: (1) how parents conceptualize their child's MH problems; (2) factors related to parents' conceptualization of youths' problems using medical model terms; and (3) associations between paren
