Pesticides, used in agriculture to control plant diseases, pose risks to the environment and human health. To address this, there's a growing focus on biocontrol, using microorganisms instead of chemicals. In this study, we aimed to identify Bacillus isolates as potential biological control agents. We tested 1574 Bacillus isolates for antifungal effects against pathogens like Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium solani, and Rhizoctonia solani. Out of these, 77 isolates formed inhibition zones against all three pathogens. We then investigated their lytic enzyme activities (protease, chitinase, and chitos

Interactions between two species that result in reduced growth rates for both and extinction of one of the species are generally considered cases of asymmetric interspecific competition. Exploitative or interference competition is the usual mechanism invoked. Here we describe another mechanism producing the same result, named apparent competition through facilitation (ACF), observed between Melanoides tuberculata and Biomphalaria glabrata populations. The superior competitor actually gives some benefit to the other species, whose population becomes unstable with progressively increasing oscill

INTRODUCTION: Over the past three decades, dengue disease incidence has significantly increased worldwide, creating serious public health concerns. The principal mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, exhibits resistance to commonly used insecticides, reducing the efficacy of vector control measures. Thus, the necessity for alternate strategies is critical. Using bioinsecticides such as entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is one such strategy. This study details the evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger against pyrethroid-resistant and pyrethroid-susceptib

Vector mosquito control is an integral part of malaria control. The global emergence of insecticide resistance in malaria-transmitting Anophelines has become an impediment and has created an urgent need for novel mosquito control approaches. Here, we show that a biopesticide derived from the soil-dwelling bacterium Chromobacterium sp. Panama (Csp_P) kills insecticide-resistant Anopheles mosquitoes, regardless of their resistance mechanisms. In addition, sublethal dose of Csp_P acts as a synergist to now used chemical insecticides across multiple classes. Moreover, Csp_P reduces host-seeking be

Wolbachia is used as a potential biocontrol tool to reduce dengue mosquitoes and also to reduce dengue virus (DENV) load in transinfected Aedes aegypti. Different field trials including the ones by the World Mosquito Program (WMP) have deployed Wolbachia carrying DENV primary vectors at different target sites worldwide. Field trials suggest that through the Population Replacement Strategy (PRS) and Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT), Wolbachia can either introgress into the local Ae. aegypti population or reduce their population size by cytoplasmic incompatibility, leading to subsequent reduc

The impact of the programmatic use of larvicides for mosquito control on native stingless bees (e.g., Apidae, Meliponini) is a growing concern in Australia due to heightened conservation awareness and the growth of hobbyist stingless bee keeping. In Australia, the two most widely used mosquito larvicides are the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) and the insect hormone mimic methoprene (as S-methoprene). Each has a unique mode of action that could present a risk to stingless bees and other pollinators. Herein, we review the potential impacts of these larvicides on native A

BACKGROUND: Aedes mosquitoes pose a significant global threat as vectors for several debilitating arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Their unique breeding habits, behavior, and daytime activity complicate control efforts, prompting the search for innovative solutions. The sterile insect technique (SIT) and incompatible insect technique (IIT) are promising new techniques under investigation. This review synthesizes findings from field trials on SIT and/or IIT for Aedes mosquito control.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted through comprehensive searches on S

Biological methods for mosquito larvae control are completely biodegradable and have null or limited effects on nontarget organisms. However, commercially available products have a low residual activity, with the consequent need for multiple applications that inevitably increase costs and the risk of resistance phenomena insurgence. Smart delivery systems made of hydrogels proved their efficacy in increasing the action duration of biolarvicides up to several months, but the lack of an efficient baiting mechanism to strongly attract the target pest remains a problem in practical applications. Mosquitoes transmit several diseases, which are of global significance (malaria, dengue, yellow fever, Zika). The geographic range of mosquitoes is increasing due to climate change, tourism and trade. Both conidial and blastospore formulations of the entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium brunneum ARSEF 4556, are being investigated as mosquito larvicides. However, concerns have been raised over possible non-target impacts to arthropod mosquito predators such as larvae of Toxorhynchites brevipalpis which feed on larvae of mosquito vector species. Laboratory-based, small container bioassays showed

The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is a polyphagous pest found throughout the United States, where it attacks many field and vegetable crops. Although H. zea has long been a traditional pest of sweet corn, its importance to this crop has increased dramatically over the past two decades. In this review, we summarize information critical for current and future management of H. zea in sweet corn production in the United States. First, we discuss the pest status of H. zea and its life history, including migration, infestation and larval development, diapause, overwintering, and abiotic fa

Aedes aegypti (black-eyed Liverpool strain) were exposed to a sublethal dose (LD25) of Bacillus sphaericus and were fed to Mastomys coucha infected with Brugia malayi. The development of the filarial parasite was found to be arrested mostly at the second larval stage. The infection (P < 0.05), infectivity rates (P < 0.001) and L3 load (P < 0.001) were found to be reduced significantly in the treated group.

Steinernema feltiae is the most effective nematode for controlling sciarid species but S. carpocapsae does exert some control. S. feltiae is less effective at 30 degrees C than at 22 degrees C. S. anomali, S. riobravis and two Heterorhabditis spp. gave better control at the higher temperature. All six sciarid species tested were susceptible to S. feltiae but there was some variation in the level of infection. UK isolates of S. feltiae were more effective against UK sciarids than the nematode isolates from other European countries which were tested. Adult sciarids are infected by S. feltiae and

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a biological control method aimed at reducing or eliminating populations of pests and disease vectors. This technique involves releasing sterilised insects which, by mating with wild individuals, will reduce the target population. In this study, spatial aspects are incorporated through an explicit metapopulation model, in which both wild and sterile insects disperse across multiple patches. We derive a general sufficient condition ensuring elimination of the wild population in all patches through SIT. When a strong Allee effect is naturally present in each

Wolbachia, an intracellular bacterium, is well-known for inducing cytoplasmic incompatibility, which has become a promising and environmentally sustainable strategy for controlling pest populations. The strain wStri, specifically identified in Nilaparvata lugens (brown planthopper), has shown potential for such biocontrol applications. In this study, we develop a comprehensive discrete mathematical model to analyze the dynamics of wStri spread in a mixed population of wStri-infected, wLug-infected, and uninfected Nilaparvata lugens under both constant and periodically varying environmental con

The course of diapause induction as well as of diapause termination in females of the predatory mite Euseius (Amblyseius) finlandicus Oudemans (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in Northern Greece was determined by transferring females during winter and early spring from peach trees to a short day (LD 8:16) or a long day (LD 16:8) photoperiod both at 20 degrees C. The first diapause females were found in mid September and by the first week of October all the females were in diapause. The mean number of days required for diapause termination under the short day photoperiod LD 8:16 was gradually reduced from

BACKGROUND: The tomato russet mite, Aculops lycopersici, is a major worldwide pest infesting tomato crops for which only few control methods are available. At present, no commercialized beneficial organism has proven to be an effective biological control agent of the pest. As there is a strong need to develop alternatives to synthetic insecticides, we assessed the efficacy of an iolinid mite, Pronematus ubiquitus, as a preventive method against A. lycopersici in comparison with a curative treatment in a replicated experiment in the greenhouse.
RESULTS: After pre-establishment of P. ubiquitus

Tetranychus urticae is a cosmopolitan pest that causes significant yield losses in tomato crops. Entomopathogenic bacteria of the genera Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus produce diverse secondary metabolites with acaricidal properties. This study aimed to evaluate the acaricidal and deterrent effects of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) of Photorhabdus luminescens, Xenorhabdus szentirmaii and Xenorhabdus doucetiae against T. urticae in tomato. In Petri dishes, each CFS was sprayed onto leaflets infested with females or eggs. The deterrent activity was assessed through dual-choice bioassays. Furthermor

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) suppresses insect reproduction by repeatedly releasing sterile insects and allowing them to mate with insects of the same species in the wild. While the classical SIT relies on sterile males mating with wild females, there is a debate regarding the risks and benefits of releasing sterile females along with the sterile males (i.e. bisexual releases). In a replicated cage experiment, we compared the effect of unisexual and bisexual sterile releases of Drosophila suzukii on induced sterility. To ensure field-realism, fertile females - wild-F0 freshly
