Antibiotic dispensing practices and antimicrobial stewardship gaps in community pharmacies in Kakamega County, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat, with sub-Saharan Africa bearing a disproportionate burden. Community-level antibiotic dispensing practices remain poorly described in Kenya outside Nairobi. METHODS: A total of 504 antibiotic dispensing events were recorded across 22 community pharmacies in Kakamega County, western Kenya, between 3rd and 22nd August 2025. Data collected included dispensing source (over-the-counter [OTC] versus prescription), clinical indication, antibiotics dispensed, course completion, and self-reported repeat antibiotic use within t

Patient and pharmacist perspectives on opioid misuse screening and brief interventions in community pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacy-based screening and brief interventions (SBI) offer opportunities to identify opioid misuse and opioid safety risks and provide brief interventions that do not overly burden pharmacists. Currently, such interventions are being developed without patient input and in-depth contextual data and insufficient translation into practice. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively explore and compare patient and pharmacist perceptions and needs regarding a pharmacy-based opioid misuse SBI and to identify relevant SBI features and future implementation strategies. METHODS: Using

Creation of pacemaker remote monitoring networks between hospital and pharmacies during Covid-19 outbreak.

INTRODUCTION: Remote Monitoring (RM) of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs) is proven to be safe and efficient. It has been adopted in our center since years. At the time of the recent Covid-19 outbreak, we introduced and tested a collaborative organizational model, through a new RM device (Totem), creating a network with the surrounding territory and limiting CIED patients' presence in hospital. METHODS: We involved 4 neighbor pharmacies where Totem devices were installed; we called and informed 64 patients with Totem compatible pacemaker (PM) about the possibility to perform thei

[Antibiotic consumption in a community of Mexico City. II. Survey of purchases at pharmacies].

In developing countries, antibiotics are the most common sales of drugs and it has been suggested that their irrational use leads to the emergence of resistant bacteria. In order to assess the purchase of antimicrobials in a peri-urban community in Mexico City six local drug stores were randomly selected. A social worker made five visits to each pharmacy and she observed the events during the purchase of the drug and applied a structured questionnaire to the customer immediately after the transaction. Antibiotics were the majority (29%) of the drug sales. Of all purchasers of an antibiotic 43%

Detection of nephrotoxic drugs and dose adjustment in patients with low glomerular filtration rate in community pharmacy: A multicenter study in Spanish community pharmacies.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a significant global health burden, with its prevalence markedly increasing in the elderly. This multicenter, non-controlled, prospective study was conducted in 16 Spanish community pharmacies to assess the feasibility of identifying potentially inappropriate prescriptions (PIPs) in patients with reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Patients over 60 years old with a body mass index between 19 and 35 kg/m2, who were taking at least one nephrotoxic medication or a drug requiring dose adjustment based on renal function, were recruited.
