Background During the transition phase (TP), patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) exhibit decreased muscle strength. Studies assessing the effects of resistance exercise alone on muscle strength in these individuals are scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a program of resistance exercise (PRE) on parameters of muscle strength in subjects in the TP and with childhood-onset GHD treated with recombinant GH (rGH). Methods Sixteen male patients were enrolled and divided into two groups: GHD (n=9) and GH sufficiency (GHS, n=7). Patients with GHD underwent a 12

Cells initiate fate decisions during G1 phase by converting extracellular signals into distinctive cell cycle kinetics. The DNA replication timing is determined in G1 phase; lengthened G1 and hastened S phases correlate with increased neurogenic propensity of neural progenitor cells (NPCs), although the underlying molecular control remains elusive. Here, we report that proper G1 phase completion in NPCs requires Brap, a Ras-Erk signaling modulator with ubiquitin E3 ligase activity. We identified Skp2 and Skp2-associated SCF ubiquitin ligase as a key target of Brap-mediated polyubiquitination.

The liquid crystal of a chiral bowl-shaped molecule having a central-phosphorus atom and long alkyl chains was developed. The DSC and XRD analyses suggested the formation of columnar liquid crystals of both the enantiopure and racemic compounds. The condensed phase of the enantiopure compound in a thin film exhibited a significant signal in CD spectra, which was switched by a reversible phase transition between the crystalline and liquid crystalline states.

Viruses, obligate cellular parasites rely on host cellular functions and target the host cell cycle for their own benefit. In this study, effect of rotavirus infection on cell cycle machinery was explored. We found that rotavirus (RV) infection in MA104 cells induces the expression of cyclins and cyclin dependent kinases and down-regulates expression of CDK inhibitors, resulting in G1 to S phase transition. The rotavirus induced S phase accumulation was found to be concurrent with induction in expression of calmodulin and activation of CaMKI which is reported as inducer of G1-S phase transitio

We study the structural behavior of SnSe under the hydrostatic pressure using a constant pressure ab initio technique. We find SnSe undergoes a structural second order phase transition from the orthorhombic (Pnma) structure to orthorhombic (Cmcm) structure in the constant pressure simulation at 7 GPa which is in good agreement with the recent experimental study. The Cmcm structure is fivefold coordinated. This phase transition is also analyzed from the total energy calculations. Besides, we study the behavior of SnSe under uniaxial stress.

Shigella flexneri is an infectious pathogen that causes dysentery to human, which remains a serious threat to public health, particularly in developing countries. In this study, the global protein expression patterns of S. flexneri during transition from exponential growth to stationary phase in vitro were analyzed by using 2-D PAGE combined with MALDI-TOF MS. In a time-course experiment with five time points, the relative abundance of 49 protein spots varied significantly. Interestingly, a putative outer membrane protein YciD (OmpW) was almost not detected in the exponential growth phase but

The dibenzopentacene (DBPen) molecules on the Pb(111) substrate have been investigated using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Under the influence of an electric field, DBPen molecules undergo the phase transitions between the 2D mobile phase and the close-packed phase, as well as point and organizational chirality switching. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the electric field significantly modulates the charge transfer from the substrate to the molecules and induces the Coulomb expansion of the molecular lattice, resulting in phase transitions and chirality switchin

Capillary condensation/evaporation-induced hysteresis is a fundamental characteristic of confined fluid-phase transitions. Although extensively studied for pure fluids, the hysteresis behavior of confined fluid mixtures remains poorly understood. Here, grand canonical Monte Carlo-molecular dynamics (GCMD) simulations are employed to investigate adsorption-desorption hysteresis of N2/CH4 mixtures in cylindrical carbon nanopores. While pure CH4 and N2 exhibit the expected pore-size- and temperature-dependent hysteresis behavior, binary mixtures show strongly composition-dependent phase transitio

Halogen engineering offers a means of enhancing the physical properties of materials by fine-tuning the rotational energy barrier and dipole moment, which proved to be effective in achieving switchable phase transitions and optical responses in materials. In this work, by substituting the methyl group in ligand N-ethyl-1,5-diazabicyclo[3.3.0]octane (CH3CH2-3.3.0-Dabco) with halogen atoms X (Cl or Br) and then contining to react it with FeBr3 in a HBr aqueous solution, we successfully synthesized three kinds of organic-inorganic hybrid switchable phase-change materials, [CH3CH2-3.3.0-Dabco]FeBr

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are common in the peripartum period and pose a great risk to the well-being of the mother, the infant, and the entire family. Evidence from longitudinal studies suggests that affected women do not constitute one homogeneous group in terms of severity, chronicity, and onset of symptoms. To account for individual differences regarding the longitudinal course of depressive symptoms from pregnancy to the postpartum period, growth mixture models have proven to be useful.
METHODS: We conducted a group-based trajectory modeling analysis to identify perinatal depressiv

The phase transition from solitary to gregarious locusts is crucial in outbreaks of locust plague, which threaten agricultural yield and food security. Research on the regulatory mechanisms of phase transition in locusts has focused primarily on the transcriptional or posttranslational level. However, the translational regulation of phase transition is unexplored. Here, we show a phase-dependent pattern at the translation level, which exhibits different polysome profiles between gregarious and solitary locusts. The gregarious locusts exhibit significant increases in 60S and polyribosomes, whil

Organisms dwelling in ocean trenches are exposed to the high hydrostatic pressure of ocean water. Increasing pressure can alter the membrane packing density and fluidity and trigger the fluid-to-gel phase transition. To combat environmental stress, the organisms synthesize small polar solutes, which are known as osmolytes. Urea and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) are two such solutes found in deep-sea creatures. While TMAO stabilizes protein, urea induces protein denaturation. These solutes strongly influence the packing density and membrane fluidity of the lipid bilayer at different conditions.

Efficient removal of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) has received great attention because of the considerable harm that they cause to the environment and to human health. Developing novel catalysts and exploring the catalytic activation and deconstruction mechanism of CVOCs molecule are always the focus in this field. Here, a set of Sn doped TiO2 catalysts were investigated for the decomposition of dichloromethane (DCM). Rietveld refinement of the XRD patterns showed that Sn ions can uniformly disperse into TiO2 and induce the crystal transition of anatase. Meanwhile, such decor

We report surprising results for the self-assembly of lecithin (a common phospholipid) in water-ethanol mixtures. Lecithin forms vesicles (∼100 nm diameter) in water. These vesicles are transformed into small micelles (∼5 nm diameter) by a variety of destabilizing agents such as single-tailed surfactants and alcohols. In a surfactant-induced vesicle-micelle transition (VMT), vesicles steadily convert to micelles upon adding the surfactant─thereby, the turbidity of the solution drops monotonically. Instead, when an alcohol like ethanol is added to lecithin vesicles, we find a new, distinctive p

This study reviews developments in experimental studies of photo-induced cooperative phenomena (photo-induced phase transition, PIPT), which involve ultrafast dynamical changes in electronic, spin, and lattice structures. The growth in PIPT research has been driven by deep collaboration among quantum beam, materials, and theoretical sciences. In the early stages of PIPT research, it was thought that the dynamic PIPT process is dominated by energy relaxation from the photoexcited state, a process classified as classical and non-coherent. Using ultrashort-pulse quantum beam technologies, a new o

A power ramp from L- to H-mode-like conditions is carried out in a 50 ms long global full-f turbulence simulation of ASDEX Upgrade with the grillix code. After 32 ms of slow profile evolution, a sudden change in transport triggers a pedestal buildup within ∼100 μs. This transition results from an abrupt shift from drift-wave (DW) to kinetic-ballooning-mode (KBM) turbulence. The self-consistently evolved E×B flow shear first increases slowly and then sharply. Geodesic acoustic mode and Alfvénic flow oscillations intensify prior to the transition and subsequently die out. This is followed by sl

We present a two-phase multirelaxation-time lattice Boltzmann framework to investigate mass transport in nanoporous membranes under transitional flow conditions. Simulations for the flow through one pore are compared with experimental data for the permeation of low molecular-weight hydrocarbons through anodic alumina membranes with a pore size of 45 nm. Knudsen numbers range between 0.2 and 1.2 for pressures between 1 and 6 bar at room temperature. The model incorporates a modified Peng-Robinson equation of state, extended cohesive and adhesive interactions, and rarefaction-sensitive relaxatio

Dynamic control of radiative coupling in photonic metasurfaces is typically constrained by fixed structural asymmetry, limiting active tunability of high-Q resonant states. Here, a hybrid graphene-vanadium dioxide (VO2) metasurface is proposed to realize phase-transition-driven modulation of radiative decay in the terahertz regime. The structure integrates a split VO2 resonator with a diagonally oriented graphene perturbation, where the phase-dependent conductivity evolution of VO2 actively governs the balance between radiative and dissipative loss channels. In the insulating phase, destructiv

We propose and investigate a novel two-dimensional (2D) tight-binding model defined on a diamond-dodecagon lattice geometry that hosts multiple flat bands (FBs) and supports topological phase transitions driven by a magnetic flux. This lattice exhibits three completely flat, non-dispersive bands in the band structure in the absence of magnetic flux due to destructive interference in the electron hoppings, leading to the emergence of compact localized states (CLS). These CLS are analytically constructed and exhibit real-space confinement of the electrons, arising solely due to the lattice's geo
