Chromium-mediated synthesis of polycyclic aromatic compounds from halobiaryls.

[reaction: see text] Reaction of 2,2'-dihalobiphenyl with butyllithium followed by the addition of chromium(III) chloride and alkynes afforded the corresponding phenanthrene derivatives via formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition. A variety of alkynes could be used for this reaction, such as alkyl, aryl, silyl, and alkoxycarbonyl alkynes. Repetitive process of the reaction gave more extended polycyclic compounds such as benzo[g]chrysene and azacyclopentaphenalene derivatives.

Dependence of the substituent energy on the level of theory.

Most often, the substituent effects are described using rather troublesome Hammett constants. Quite recently, it has been proposed to use the so-called substituent energy, which is based on total energies of the X-substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and phenyl. This article concerns the influence of the applied level of theory (i.e., both the basis set and the method) on the determined values of the substituent energies. For this purpose, the energies of the NH2 and NO2 groups in 16 unique positions of naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were calculated using

Analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Phthalate Esters in Soil and Food Grains from the Balkan Peninsula: Implication on DNA Adduct Formation by Aristolochic Acid I and Balkan Endemic Nephropathy.

Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is a chronic tubulointerstitial nephropathy affecting residents of rural farming areas in many Balkan countries. Although it is generally believed that BEN is an environmental disease caused by multiple geochemical factors with much attention on aristolochic acids (AAs), its etiology remains controversial. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that environmental contamination and subsequent food contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalate esters are AA toxicity factors and important to BEN development. We identified significantly hi

Production of biosurfactant using the endemic bacterial community of a PAHs contaminated soil, and its potential use for PAHs remobilization.

Biosurfactants are surface-active agents produced by microorganisms whose use in soil remediation processes is increasingly discussed as a more environmentally friendly alternative than chemically produced surfactants. In this work, we report the production of a biosurfactant by a bacterial community extracted from a polluted soil, mainly impacted by PAHs, in order to use it in a soil-washing process coupled with bioremediation. Nutrient balance was a critical parameter to optimize the production. Best conditions for biosurfactant production were found to be 20 g/L of glucose, 2 g/L of NH4NO3,

PAHs accelerate the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes in coastal water microbial community.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been regarded as emerging contaminants and have attracted growing attention owing to their widespread presence in the environment. In addition to the well-documented selective pressure of antibiotics, ARGs have also become prevalent because of anthropogenic impacts. Coastal habitats are located between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, which are a hotspot for anthropogenic impacts. Excessive accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has posed a serious threat to coastal habitats, but no information is available on the effect of PAHs on ant

Reversed Phase SPE and GC-MS Study of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Water Samples from the River Buriganga, Bangladesh.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) categorized as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). PAHs are ubiquitous in terrestrial, atmospheric, and particularly aquatic environments throughout the world and have been detected in lakes, ground waters, and rivers. This research work involved the analysis of five PAHs, anthracene, fluorene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene, in water sample collected from the river Buriganga, Bangladesh. The extraction of water samples was carried out by reversed phase solid-phase extraction (RP-SPE) technique with C-1

Real-time visualization and quantification of PAH photodegradation on and within plant leaves.

Vegetation plays a key role in the environmental cycling and fate of many organic chemicals. A compound's location on or within leaves will affect its persistence and significance; retention in surface compartments (i.e., the epicuticular wax and cuticle) renders the compound more susceptible to photodegradation and volatilization, while penetration into the epidermal cell walls or cytoplasm will enhance susceptibility to metabolism. Here, for the first time, methodologies which combine plant and PAH autofluorescence with two-photon excitation microscopy (TPEM) are used to visualize and quanti

Optimizing contaminant desorption and bioavailability in dense slurry systems. 2. PAH bioavailability and rates of degradation.

The effects of mechanical mixing on rates of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) biodegradation in dense geosorbent slurry (67% solids content, w/w) systems were evaluated using laboratory-scale intermittently mixed batch bioreactors. A PAH-contaminated soil and a phenanthrene-sorbed mineral sorbent (alpha-Al2O3) were respectively employed as slurry solids in aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation studies. Both slurries exhibited a characteristic behavior of pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluids, and the impeller revolution rate and its diameter had dramatic impacts on power and torque requiremen

Growth of rhodococcus S1 on anthracene.

Three slow-growing bacteria were isolated from a mixed culture enriched for growth on anthracene, using creosote-contaminated soil as the inoculum. Organisms were shown to use anthracene by the production of a clear zone around the colony after a mineral salts agar plate was sprayed with anthracene. All three bacteria were nonmotile, nonsporulating, gram-positive rods and stained acid-fast. Physiological and biochemical tests, GC content, and cell wall lipid patterns of whole cell methanolysates indicated that they belonged to the Nocardia-Mycobacterium-Rhodococcus group. On the basis of these

Synthesis of amphiphilic chiral salen complexes and their conformational manipulation at the air-water interface.

A series of amphiphilic salen complexes, [L1a,bM] and [L2a,bM], were designed and synthesized. These complexes consist of two or four hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) chains and a hydrophobic π-extended metallosalen core based on naphthalene or phenanthrene. The obtained amphiphilic complexes, [L1bM] (M = Ni, Cu, Zn), formed a monolayer at the air-water interface, while the monocationic [L1bCo(MeNH2)2](OTf) did not form a well-defined monolayer. The number of hydrophilic TEG chains also had an influence on the monolayerformation behavior; the tetra-TEG derivatives, [L1bNi] and [L2bNi], sho

The genome of Alcaligenes aquatilis strain BU33N: Insights into hydrocarbon degradation capacity.

Environmental contamination with hydrocarbons though natural and anthropogenic activities is a serious threat to biodiversity and human health. Microbial bioremediation is considered as the effective means of treating such contamination. This study describes a biosurfactant producing bacterium capable of utilizing crude oil and various hydrocarbons as the sole carbon source. Strain BU33N was isolated from hydrocarbon polluted sediments from the Bizerte coast (northern Tunisia) and was identified as Alcaligenes aquatilis on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. When grown on crude oil a

Identification and functional analysis of the genes for naphthalenesulfonate catabolism by Sphingomonas xenophaga BN6.

Sphingomonas xenophaga BN6 degrades various (substituted) naphthalenesulfonates to the corresponding (substituted) salicylates. A gene cluster was identified on the plasmid pBN6 which coded for several enzymes participating in the degradative pathway for naphthalenesulfonates. A DNA fragment of 16 915 bp was sequenced which contained 17 ORFs. The genes encoding the 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene dioxygenase, 2-hydroxychromene-2-carboxylate isomerase, and 2'-hydroxybenzalpyruvate aldolase of the naphthalenesulfonate pathway were identified on the DNA fragment and the encoded proteins heterologously e

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during maternal pregnancy: Effects of DNA damage on neural tube defects in offspring.

Prenatal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure may contribute to neural tube defects (NTD), but combined effects and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We conducted a matched case-control study (128 pairs) in six high-risk counties in Shanxi Province, China (2004-2016). At delivery or pregnancy termination, placenta samples were collected. Sixteen placental PAHs and 11 hydroxylated metabolites were quantified by GC-MS/MS as biomarkers of fetal intrauterine exposure, alongside 16 DNA adducts measured by UPLC-MS/MS. Complementary ICR mouse experiments with benzo[a]pyrene (BaP, 100 mg

Presenting a new fluorescent probe, methyl(10-phenylphenanthren-9-yl)sulfane sensitive to the polarity and rigidity of the microenvironment: applications toward microheterogeneous systems.

A molecule, methyl(10-phenylphenanthren-9-yl)sulfane (MPPS), with a straightforward structure, has been synthesized, characterized, and explored as a new fluorescent probe for microheterogeneous systems. The photophysical properties of MPPS have been studied through experimental and theoretical calculations using the range-separated hybrid functional CAM-B3LYP in conjunction with a 6-311++g(d,p) basis set. Theoretical calculations show that the freely rotating phenyl ring forms a 94° dihedral angle with the phenanthrene ring in the ground state. Experimentally found two absorption bands corres

High throughput nano-liter RT-qPCR to classify soil contamination using a soil arthropod.

BACKGROUND: To incorporate genomics data into environmental assessments a mechanistic perspective of interactions between chemicals and induced biological processes needs to be developed. Since chemical compounds with structural similarity often induce comparable biological responses in exposed animals, gene expression signatures can serve as a starting point for the assessment of chemicals and their toxicity, but only when relevant and stable gene panels are available. To design such a panel, we isolated differentially expressed gene fragments from the soil arthropod Folsomia candida, a speci

Cr-Catalyzed Intramolecular Arylative Cross-Coupling of Unactivated C-H Bonds with C-Halide Bonds.

We report here a chromium-catalyzed intramolecular arylation of unactivated C-H bonds with C-halide bonds under mild conditions. This reaction was enabled by using a low-cost CrCl2 salt as the precatalyst in combination with allylmagnesium bromide and E/Z-mixed 1-halo-2-styrylarenes as substates, providing a strategy for the construction of functionalized phenanthrene compounds without using external ligands.

Tris(benzocyclobutadieno)triphenylene and its lower biphenylene homologues by palladium-catalyzed cyclizations of 2,3-didehydrobiphenylene.

[reaction: see text] The Pd-catalyzed cycloaddition of didehydrobiphenylenes 2a,b, generated from the corresponding 3-(trimethylsilyl)-2-biphenylenyl triflates with fluoride, furnishes the C3-symmetric trimers 1a,b in which the embedded triphenylene unit is distorted to increase the aromaticity of the central benzene ring. Cocyclization of 2a,b with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate provides the phenanthrene- and naphthalenecarboxylic ester analogues, depending on the catalyst used.

First evidence of microplastics in a freshwater river and their relationship to water quality.

Microplastics are plastic fragments ranging from 0.1 to 5 mm, their presence in the environment is becoming increasingly evident because they do not degrade and they can enter the human body through inhalation or ingestion. Although their effects are not fully understood, they are a foreign material to the body that can have negative effects. Studies of microplastics in freshwater are scarce and even more so those that refer to bodies of water for recreational and tourist purposes. The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between the amount of microplastics and the physicoc

Insights into the attenuated sorption of organic compounds on black carbon aged in soil.

Sorption of organic compounds on fresh black carbons (BCs) can be greatly attenuated in soil over time. We examined herein the changes in surface properties of maize straw-derived BCs (biochars) after aged in a black soil and their effects on the sorptive behaviors of naphthalene, phenanthrene and 1,3-dinitrobenzene. Dissolved fulvic and humic acids extracted from the soil were used to explore the role of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the aging of biochars. Chromatography analysis indicated that DOC molecules with relatively large molecular weight were preferentially adsorbed on the biocha

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons do not disturb liquid-liquid phase coexistence, but increase the fluidity of model membranes.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a group of compounds, many of which are toxic, formed by incomplete combustion or thermal processing of organic material. They are highly lipophilic and thus present in some seed oils used for human consumption as well as being increasingly common in aquaculture diets due to inclusion of vegetable oils. Cytotoxic effects of PAHs have been thought to be partly due to a membrane perturbing effect of these compounds. A series of studies were here performed to examine the effects of three different PAHs (naphthalene, phenanthrene and benzo[a]pyrene) with differe
