OBJECTIVE: Controlled study of the long-term outcome of selective mutism (SM) in childhood.
METHOD: A sample of 33 young adults with SM in childhood and two age- and gender-matched comparison groups were studied. The latter comprised 26 young adults with anxiety disorders in childhood (ANX) and 30 young adults with no psychiatric disorders during childhood. The three groups were compared with regard to psychiatric disorder in young adulthood by use of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). In addition, the effect of various predictors on outcome of SM was studied.

The DSM-III-R subclassifies panic disorder (PD) under the anxiety disorders (or anxiety and phobic neuroses) along with phobic, obsessive compulsive (OCD), generalized anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although allowances are made for the specification of the current degree of impairment as severe, e.g., at least eight panic attacks monthly, avoidance behavior resulting in being completely house-bound or compulsions being the major life activity, the anxiety disorder category does not provide for the simultaneous occurrence of associated psychotic features as part of the disord

Distributions of psychiatric classifications among 42,479 persons with mental retardation were reviewed to determine whether relative rates of disorders for persons with both mental retardation and a mental disorder resembled those identified in other studies. Analyses conducted separately for children, adults, by sex, and by intellectual level indicated that rates of reported schizophrenic and psychotic disorders were generally higher than expected relative to rates of personality disorders, affective disorders, anxiety and phobic disorders, and behavior disorders. Factors that may have affec

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent condition associated with substantial physical and psychological burden. Although psychiatric comorbidities are frequently reported, large-scale real-world data remain limited.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX U.S. Collaborative Network, including women aged 21-60 diagnosed with endometriosis between 2001 and 2020. Patients were matched 1:1 with controls without endometriosis using propensity score matching (PSM) based on age, race, nicotine dependence, alcohol abuse, obesity, infertility, delivery

An interviewer rating scale for the measurement of (agora)phobic avoidance, the Phobic Avoidance Rating Scale (PARS), is described and psychometrically evaluated. The criteria of avoidance used are purported to correct weaknesses of the sets of criteria used in self-report instruments. Two samples with inpatients satisfying DSM-III-R criteria for unipolar depressive and/or anxiety disorder were studied. Intercorrelational and factor analyses revealed 3 dimensions among agoraphobic fears: separation fears, social fears and simple phobic fears. Overall, the 3 subscales constructed from these dim

BACKGROUND: Processes of phasic fear responses to threatening stimuli are thought to be distinct from sustained, anticipatory anxiety toward an unpredicted, potential threat. There is evidence for dissociable neural correlates of phasic fear and sustained anxiety. Whereas increased amygdala activity has been associated with phasic fear, sustained anxiety has been linked with activation of the bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and the insula. So far, only a few studies have focused on the dissociation of neural processes related to both phasic and sustaine

The relationship between ICD-9 anxiety states, phobic states, obsessive-compulsive disorder and DSM-III anxiety disorders is discussed. Data are presented which show that one third of ICD-9 anxiety states are diagnosed as affective disorders by DSM-III. Research concerning cases with a concurrent affective and anxiety disorder is discussed. It is finally concluded that while DSM-III has unsolved hierarchial problems, the identification of the two disorders, panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, seems advantageous and the inclusion of obsessive compulsive disorder, among the anxiety

BACKGROUND: Among the Indian adolescents, the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity and alcohol use disorders (AUD) are 7.3% and 1.3%. However, no separate data are available for indigenous tribal populations. This study estimated the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity and AUD and associated socio-demographic factors among adolescents in the tribal communities in three widely varying states in India.
METHODS: Using validated Indian versions of the MINI 6.0, MINI Kid 6.0, and ICD-10 criteria, we conducted a cross-sectional survey from January to May 2019 in three Indian sites: Valsad, Gujarat (

Sixty alcoholics (40 males) were assessed for agoraphobia and social phobia, and over half the sample were rated as having either or both these disorders when last drinking. Twenty one subjects had mild phobias and eleven had severe phobias. The more severely phobic males were also found to be the most alcohol dependent and those with no phobias were least alcohol dependent but this effect was not found among the females. All phobic alcoholics reported that alcohol had helped them to cope in feared situations, and almost all had deliberately used it for this purpose. A small sample of out-pati

In a sample of 131 patients with panic disorder, we explored both the presence of DSM-III-R criteria for hypochondriasis and the occurrence of illness phobia before the onset of panic disorder. To explore further the possible relationship between hypochondriacal features and panic-agoraphobic syndrome, we compared patients both with and without current hypochondriasis and then patients both with and without illness phobia before the onset of panic disorder. Finally, we investigated the relationship between premorbid phobic-anxious traits and hypochondriasis during panic disorder. No difference

Phobic disorders and other anxiety disorders belong to the most frequent psychiatric illnesses. Since they can be overlapped by other mental illnesses, they are often overlooked in practice. For example, comorbidity between anxiety and depression is very high. Also, personality disorders and a person's biography can lay the ground to anxiety. A typical complication of anxiety disorders is dependence of substances, predominantly of tranquilizers and alcohol. By means of a clinical case example, the topic of anxiety disorders is discussed practically and the treatment concept is detailed. Alread

Anxiety disorders in children are common. The current international classification systems--DSM and ICD--have increased the reliability of the diagnostic classification of anxiety disorders among children, too. The clinical picture of separation anxiety disorder of childhood, the phobic anxiety disorder of childhood, the social anxiety disorder of childhood, and the overanxious disorder of childhood will be described. The paper will conclude with a description of the diagnostic procedure. A case study will serve to illustrate the diagnostic and therapeutic procedure.

Relations among maternal phobic anxiety, maternal overcontrol, child anxiety sensitivity, and child level of fear were explored in 156 children referred to an outpatient clinic for psychological evaluation. In addition, these relations were examined separately in analyses of age, gender, and diagnostic status. Overall, age, gender, and child anxiety sensitivity, along with maternal ratings of an overly controlling parenting strategy were significant predictors of levels of fear. These four variables predicted approximately 50% of the variance associated with fear levels. Surprisingly, maternal

New psychiatric out-patients with depressive, phobic, and anxiety neurosis were randomly allocated to out-patient care or to one of two types of day hospital treatment, one specialising in psychotherapy and the other offering all forms of day care. Of 106 patients who entered the study, 78 had assessments of psychiatric symptomatology and social adjustment both before treatment and after 4, 8 and 24 months. There was no significant difference in outcome between depressive, phobic, and anxiety neurosis, and no overall difference in response to treatment between the three types of care. Suicidal

Structured psychiatric interviews and psychological self-report measures were administered to 28 patients with irritable bowel syndrome and 19 patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Significantly more of the patients with irritable bowel syndrome had lifetime diagnoses of major depression, somatization disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and phobic disorder. They had significantly more medically unexplained somatic symptoms, and most had suffered from psychiatric disorders, particularly anxiety disorders, before the onset of their irritable bowel symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbidity between anxiety and substance use disorders was examined. The hypothesis was tested that social phobics may report greater problem alcohol use (if alcohol is used to manage social anxiety) while problem use of sedative-hypnotics may be greater in people with panic (who may be over-prescribed anxiolytics because they repeatedly seek medical assistance).
METHOD: Self-reported lifetime rates of drug and alcohol problems were assessed with the computerised Diagnostic Interview Schedule-Revised. Subjects were 146 consecutive patients treated for panic disorder (with and with

INTRODUCTION: This pilot study examined, whether long-term exposure of psychiatric patients to music that was individually adapted to brain rhythm disorders associated with psychoticism could act to ameliorate psychiatric symptoms.
METHODS: A total of 50 patients with various psychiatric diagnoses were randomised in a 1:1 ratio to listen to CDs containing either music adapted to brain rhythm anomalies associated with psychoticism - measured via a specific spectral analysis - or standard classical music. Participants were instructed to listen to the CDs over the next 18 months. Psychiatric sym

BACKGROUND: Behavioral inhibition to the unfamiliar (BI) is a heritable temperamental phenotype involving the tendency to display fearful, avoidant, or shy behavior in novel situations. BI is a familial and developmental risk factor for panic and phobic anxiety disorders. We previously observed an association between BI and a microsatellite marker linked to the corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) gene in children at risk for panic disorder. To evaluate this further, we genotyped additional families for this marker and a panel of markers encompassing the CRH locus.
METHODS: Sixty-two familie

OBJECTIVE: Many adolescents suffer from depressive and anxiety disorders simultaneously and current treatment methods do not put enough emphasis on comorbidity of these disorders. The unified protocol for treating emotional disorders in adolescents is a transdiagnostic therapy which targets mutual fundamental factors. Therefore, the current study aims to compare the effectiveness of the unified protocol alone with the unified protocol combined with mindfulness as an additional treatment in adolescents suffering from emotional disorders.
METHOD: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with ad
