First-principles thermoelectric transport in pristine and substitutionally doped monolayer 1T-TeSe2.

Assessing carrier control in two-dimensional chalcogenides requires both electronic and phonon transport. Here we study pristine and substitutionally doped monolayer 1T-TeSe2 using first-principles electronic structure, phonon Boltzmann transport, semiclassical electronic transport, and defect-scattering analysis. PBE, HSE06, and mBJ calculations including spin-orbit coupling give indirect band gaps of 0.41, 0.83, and 1.38 eV, respectively. The rotationally corrected harmonic phonons support dynamical stability within numerical resolution. The effective-thickness-corrected in-plane lattice the

Anomalous spin-lattice coupling in a 2D antiferromagnetic semiconductor revealed by surface acoustic Rayleigh waves.

Magnetic order in van der Waals magnets can strongly influence their lattice dynamics, yet how it affects local and macroscopic manifestations of spin-phonon coupling remains unclear. Optical phonons probe bond-scale exchange modulation and short-range spin correlations, whereas long-wavelength acoustic modes couple to uniform strain fields and are sensitive to renormalization of the macroscopic elastic tensor associated with long-range magnetic order. Experimentally accessing these acoustic excitations in low-dimensional crystals is challenging due to their low energies and the small lateral

Dynamic Control of Heterointerface Coupling in Magnetic van der Waals Heterostructures via Pressure Engineering.

Heterointerface coupling provides a versatile platform for investigating emergent quantum phenomena and enabling high-performance devices. Although numerous strategies have been developed to tune this coupling, the dynamics of heterointerface coupling and its cooperative interplay with external pressure remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate dynamic control of interlayer coupling by pressure engineering in a heterostructure comprising monolayer WSe2 and the room-temperature ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2. Pressure-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals an abnormal excitonic energy-shif

Anomalous lattice anharmonicity and spin-lattice coupling in spin-orbit coupled halide K2IrBr6.

The interplay between lattice distortions, magnetism, and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in 5d transition-metal halides offers a fertile platform for exploring correlated spin-lattice dynamics. Here, we investigate the impact of structural symmetry breaking on lattice vibrations and local spin environments in the antifluorite compound K2IrBr6 using temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and first-principles lattice dynamics calculations. K2IrBr6 undergoes successive cubic-to-tetragonal and tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transitions at ∼170 K and ∼122 K, res

CdSe nanoparticle elasticity and surface energy.

The acoustic phonon modes of colloidal CdSe nanoparticles in solution (293 K) are passively measured by a third order ultrafast heterodyne cross-polarized transient grating measurement. Using the observed size-dependence of the acoustic phonon frequency, the elastic properties of the nanoparticles are determined. The size-dependence of the elastic modulus is then used to ascertain information about the relative surface energies of the nanocrystals and suggests the extent and depth of surface reconstruction.

Lattice-Engineered Lanthanide Nanocrystals with Tunable Near-Infrared-IIb Lifetime.

Lattice engineering in lanthanide nanocrystals (LnNCs) is fundamental for tailoring their versatile optical properties, yet it remains underexplored in manipulating the downconversion characteristics. Here, we engineer the lattices from distorted to strain-graded in LnNCs by CaF2 deposition on vacancy-controlled β-NaxGdF3+x:Yb,A (A = Tm/Er, x = 0.5, 0.75, 1) NCs. We demonstrate that strain-graded lattices with high phonon energy enhance the multi-phonon orbit-lattice relaxation (MPR) in the downconversion process more effectively than distorted lattices, which helps to extend the near-infrared

Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in an Insulating van der Waals Magnet.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have been a fertile playground for the discovery and exploration of physical phenomena and new physics. In this Letter, we report the observation of an anomalous thermal Hall effect (THE) with κ_{xy}∼1×10^{-2}  W K^{-1} m^{-1} in an insulating van der Waals ferromagnet VI_{3}. The thermal Hall signal persists in the absence of an external magnetic field and flips sign upon the switching of the magnetization. In combination with theoretical calculations, we show that VI_{3} exhibits a dual nature of the THE, i.e., dominated by topological magnons

Designing high-performance thermoelectrics through chalcogen engineering in InSe-based layered materials.

InSe-based van der Waals layered materials InXY (X,Y = S, Se, Te) with a hexagonal phase are investigated by breaking local inversion symmetry to study their structural, mechanical, electronic, and thermoelectric properties. Chalcogen substitution introduces systematic lattice distortions, including reflection symmetry lowering, internal structural relaxation, and bond-length asymmetry with enhanced directional bonding, which not only increase structural rigidity and integrity but also contribute to a direct-to-indirect band-gap transition driven by sulfur-induced off-centering, while both con

On-chip spectral manipulation of broadband terahertz polaritons through collinear wavevector beating.

Phonon polaritons-hybrid quasiparticles arising from strong coupling between lattice vibrations and electromagnetic waves-exhibit exceptional capabilities for enhancing terahertz (THz) confinement and nonlinear light-matter interactions. On-chip spectral control of THz phonon polaritons remains challenging due to the limited THz power density available for nonlinear approaches. Here, we propose a collinear wavevector beating scheme implemented in an on-chip lithium niobate subwavelength waveguide that enables flexible spectral manipulation of broadband THz phonon polaritons simply through the

Ab Initio Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics of Ultrafast Demagnetization in Iron.

Ultrafast demagnetization in magnetic metals is the key to spintronics devices. Taking iron as a prototypical system, we investigate the demagnetization mechanism by simulating the charge and spin dynamics using nonadiabatic molecular dynamics in the presence of explicit spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Strong SOC drives ultrafast spin-flip of electrons and holes, which trigger demagnetization and remagnetization, respectively. Their confrontation decreases the demagnetization ratio and finishes the demagnetization within 167 fs, agreeing with the experimental time scale. The joint spin-flip of elec

A large enhancement of photoinduced second harmonic generation in CdI2--Cu layered nanocrystals.

Photoinduced second harmonic generation (PISHG) in undoped as well as in various Cu-doped (0.05-1.2% Cu) CdI2 nanocrystals was measured at liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT). It was found that the PISHG increases with increasing Cu doping up to approximately 0.6% and then decreases almost to that for the undoped CdI2 for doping higher than approximately 1%. The values of the second-order susceptibility ranged from 0.50 to 0.67 pm V(-1) for the Cu-doped nanocrystals with a thickness of 0.5 nm. The Cu-doping dependence shown in a parabolic fashion suggests a crucial role of the Cu agglomerates in

Ultra-Low Thermal Conductivity in Mixed Anionic CuTe2Cl: Strong Antibonding States and Lone Pair-Induced Te Ring Puckering.

Metal chalcohalides, an emerging class of mixed-anion compounds, have recently garnered increasing interest as they unite the exceptional stability of metal chalcogenides with the versatile electronic tunability of metal halides. Here, we synthesize single- and polycrystalline CuTe2Cl, a two-dimensional layered metal chalcohalide, which exhibits intrinsically ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κlat) of ∼0.54-0.24 W m-1K-1 between 300 and 600 K along the layered growth direction. Strong p-d* antibonding states arising from Cu 3d-Te 5p and Cu 3d-Cl 3p interactions in the valence band just be

Recyclable Side-Chain Azobenzene-Based Semicrystalline Polymer Films with Outstanding Intrinsic Thermal Conductivity and Photoresponsive Actuation.

Conventional polymers exhibit low intrinsic thermal conductivity (λ) of 0.1∼0.5 W/(m·K) due to disordered chain arrangements, failing to meet the heat dissipation demands of high-power flexible electronic devices. This study proposes a molecular level design strategy for side-chain azobenzene-containing semicrystalline polymers that demonstrate exceptional intrinsic thermal conductivity with photoresponsive actuation and recyclability. By precisely regulating the spatial distribution and content of azobenzene groups and hydrogen-bond network along the polymer chain through controlled radical p

Spin-Orbit-Coupling-Induced Topological Transition and Anomalously Strong Intervalley Scattering in Two-Dimensional Bismuth Allotropes with Enhanced Thermoelectric Performances.

The convergence of multivalley bands is originally believed to be beneficial for thermoelectric performance by enhancing the charge conductivity while preserving the Seebeck coefficients, based on the assumption that electron interband or intervalley scattering effects are totally negligible. In this work, we demonstrate that β-Bi with a buckled honeycomb structure experiences a topological transition from a normal insulator to a Z2 topological insulator induced by spin-orbit coupling, which subsequently increases the band degeneracy and is probably beneficial for enhancement of the thermoelec

Criterion for photonic topological transition in two-dimensional heterostructures.

The anisotropic van der Waals material α-MoO3 has recently attracted considerable attention because of the ability to support ellipse and hyperbolic phonon polaritons with extreme field confinement and long lifetimes, which can be used in topological transition and transformation polaritonics. However, the dispersion theory of some phonon polaritons in complex heterojunctions often requires tedious computation, which makes it difficult to simply judge and analyze the physical process of the photonic topological transition. Here we obtain the equivalent permittivity distribution of two-dimensio

Magnetism in AV_{3}Sb_{5} (A=Cs, Rb, and K): Origin and Consequences for the Strongly Correlated Phases.

The V-based kagome systems AV_{3}Sb_{5} (A=Cs, Rb, and K) are unique by virtue of the intricate interplay of nontrivial electronic structure, topology, and intriguing fermiology, rendering them to be a playground of many mutually dependent exotic phases like charge-order and superconductivity. Despite numerous recent studies, the interconnection of magnetism and other complex collective phenomena in these systems has yet not arrived at any conclusion. Using first-principles tools, we demonstrate that their electronic structures, complex fermiologies and phonon dispersions are strongly influenc

Thermoelectric performance of Janus monolayers embedded in MX2-based superlattices: a computational insight.

In this study, we explore a strategy to enhance the thermoelectric (TE) performance of materials by constructing Janus-embedded superlattices (SLs), where the incorporation of Janus layers at the internal interfaces and van der Waals (vdW) interactions collectively modulate electronic and phonon transport properties. Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and Boltzmann transport theory, we investigate three SL configurations-HfSe2/HfSSe/HfTe2, HfSe2/HfSTe/HfTe2, and HfSe2/HfSeTe/HfTe2-designed by embedding a Janus MXY (M = Hf; X/Y = S, Se, and Te) monolayer between conventional

Pressure-Induced Structural Phase Transition and Superconductivity in NaSn5.

The structural and electronic properties of the tin-rich compound NaSn5 were investigated under pressures of up to 10 GPa on the basis of the evolutionary algorithm (EA) technique coupled with first-principles total energy calculations. Upon compression, the known metallic tetragonal P4̅21m phase transforms into a metallic hexagonal P6/mmm phase at 1.85 GPa accompanied by an unusual change in the existing form of Sn atoms. The P6/mmm phase can be interpreted as a quasi-layered sandwich structure with two Sn layers and one sodium layer. The presence of softening phonon modes and the existence o

Anderson Localization in a Two-Dimensional Metal.

Anderson localization is anticipated to play a pivotal role in the manifestation of superconducting phases, optimal thermoelectric properties, and the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Dimensionality plays a central role in the physics of Anderson localization. Previous studies of localization in 2D conductors have relied on thin metallic films produced by vapor deposition, but challenges such as domain size effects, grain boundaries, and strain continue to complicate interpretation. Here, we overcome these challenges by investigating localization physics in Pd_{5}AlI_{2}, a van der Waals metal t
