Carotenoid biomarkers in Namibian shelf sediments: Anoxygenic photosynthesis during sulfide eruptions in the Benguela Upwelling System.

Aromatic carotenoid-derived hydrocarbon biomarkers are ubiquitous in ancient sediments and oils and are typically attributed to anoxygenic phototrophic green sulfur bacteria (GSB) and purple sulfur bacteria (PSB). These biomarkers serve as proxies for the environmental growth requirements of PSB and GSB, namely euxinic waters extending into the photic zone. Until now, prevailing models for environments supporting anoxygenic phototrophs include microbial mats, restricted basins and fjords with deep chemoclines, and meromictic lakes with shallow chemoclines. However, carotenoids have been report

Photosynthesis-inspired H2 generation using a chlorophyll-loaded liposomal nanoplatform to detect and scavenge excess ROS.

A disturbance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis may cause the pathogenesis of many diseases. Inspired by natural photosynthesis, this work proposes a photo-driven H2-evolving liposomal nanoplatform (Lip NP) that comprises an upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) that is conjugated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) via a ROS-responsive linker, which is encapsulated inside the liposomal system in which the lipid bilayer embeds chlorophyll a (Chla). The UCNP functions as a transducer, converting NIR light into upconversion luminescence for simultaneous imaging and therapy in situ. Functioning

Biosolar cells: global artificial photosynthesis needs responsive matrices with quantum coherent kinetic control for high yield.

This contribution discusses why we should consider developing artificial photosynthesis with the tandem approach followed by the Dutch BioSolar Cells consortium, a current operational paradigm for a global artificial photosynthesis project. We weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a tandem converter against other approaches, including biomass. Owing to the low density of solar energy per unit area, artificial photosynthetic systems must operate at high efficiency to minimize the land (or sea) area required. In particular, tandem converters are a much better option than biomass for densely

Effects of the Pattern of Light and a Dark Recovery Period on Photosynthesis and Growth in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803.

Optimizing the application of light is a central challenge in the cultivation of cyanobacteria because light is needed for growth, but excessive light can cause cellular damage. Here, we demonstrate that the temporal pattern of the light intensity, rather than the time-integrated daily total, determines photosynthetic stability and growth in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Cells were cultivated in a turbidostatic flat-panel photobioreactor using three different light patterns, however, with identical time-integrated daily total (3.19 × 107 µmol photons m-2 day-1): a simulated solar light/dark (L/D

The promotion effect of carbon quantum dots derived from maize stalks on the photosynthesis of maize growth.

This study described the preparation of water-soluble carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from maize stalks via a hydrothermal method at 200 °C for 10 h. The prepared CQDs exhibited an average particle size of 2.03 nm with a graphene structure, and the surfaces contained hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups. For the aqueous solution of CQDs at a concentration of 100 mg/L, the optimal excitation wavelength was 410 nm, and the maximum emission wavelength was 495 nm. By utilizing the down-conversion luminescence properties of CQDs to enhance photosynthesis in maize growth, it was found that the optimal

Interacting short-term regulatory mechanisms enable the conversion of light energy to chemical energy in photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is a complex sequence of physical, electrochemical, biochemical, and physiological processes that convert light energy and carbon dioxide into sugars. These sugars then provide the energy and carbon backbone for all metabolic pathways involved in plant growth and development. However, if light energy is not managed effectively within the thylakoid membrane, it can destroy the photosynthetic apparatus in an oxygenic environment generated by photosynthesis itself. Effective photoprotection requires a variety of partially overlapping regulatory mechanisms that control energy and el

Decoupling of stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis in terrestrial plants under elevated temperature: a meta-analysis.

Elevated temperatures pose challenges to stomatal conductance, which regulates transpiration and photosynthesis. However, the coupling of stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis may shift with warming. Here, we synthesize evidence from a meta-analysis of 207 studies to assess leaf physiological responses to warming. On average, the responses of stomatal conductance are highly variable, exhibiting no consistent directional trend, whereas transpiration increases and photosynthesis decreases, reflecting a shift towards transpirational cooling. Stomatal conductance declines until te

Assimilation dynamics of xylem-transported CO2 by woody tissue photosynthesis revealed with 11C- and 13C-labelling.

A considerable quantity of locally respired CO2 in stems can be assimilated via woody tissue photosynthesis (Pwt). Hence, Pwt locally provides carbon fuelling radial stem growth and therefore plays a major role in the stem carbon balance. It is, however, not straightforward to quantify or visualize its dynamic behaviour, especially on small spatial scales. To assess Pwt we traced xylem-transported 11CO2 in detached branches of Populus tremula L. and used positron autoradiography to visualize and quantify its dynamics on a submillimetre scale, while manipulating light exposure to the branch. A century of research on carbon isotope discrimination during photosynthesis: from early breakthroughs to future goals.

Starting with its discovery in 1929, the stable nuclide 13C has been a critical tool for developing our understanding of photosynthesis. Early surveys of carbon isotopes in plants led to questions about whether the isotopic ratio of a given plant is ultimately controlled by an active response to its environment or by the relatively static biochemistry of photosynthesis. This led to a model of the carbon isotope composition of plant tissue meant to describe the integrated effects of physical diffusion, the biochemical action of enzymes, and the physiological response of stomata on net carbon fi

Inactivation of cytosolic FUMARASE2 enhances growth and photosynthesis under simultaneous copper and iron deprivation in Arabidopsis.

Copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) are essential for plant growth and are often in short supply under natural conditions. Molecular responses to simultaneous lack of both metals (-Cu-Fe) differ from those seen in the absence of either alone. Metabolome profiling of plant leaves previously revealed that fumarate levels fall under -Cu-Fe conditions. We employed lines lacking cytosolic FUMARASE2 (FUM2) activity to study the impact of constitutive suppression of cytosolic fumarate synthesis on plant growth under Cu and/or Fe deficiency. In fum2 mutants, photosynthesis and growth were less impaired under -C

Chlorophyll a fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy can monitor activation/deactivation of photosynthesis and carotenoids in Antarctic lichens.

Lichens survive harsh weather of Antarctica as well as of other hostile environments worldwide. Therefore, this investigation is important to understand the evolution of life on Earth in relation to their stress tolerance strategy. We have used chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlF) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively, to monitor the activation/deactivation of photosynthesis and carotenoids in three diverse Antarctic lichens, Dermatocarpon polyphyllizum (DP), Umbilicaria antarctica (UA), and Leptogium puberulum (LP). These lichens, post 4 h or 24 h of hydration, showed differences in their ChlF tr

Breakdown of food waste by anaerobic fermentation and non-oxygen producing photosynthesis using a photosynthetic bacterium.

Large volumes of food waste are produced by restaurants, hotels, etc generating problems in its collection, processing and disposal. Disposal as garbage increases the organic matter in landfills and leachates. The photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris (CGA 009) easily broke down food waste. R. palustris produces H2 under anaerobic conditions and digests a very wide range of organic compounds. R. palustris reduced BOD by ≈70% and COD by ≈33%, starch, ammonia, nitrate, was removed but had little effect on reducing sugar or the total phosphorus, lipid, protein, total solid in a 7-da

Carbonyl-Site-Mediated Oxygen Reduction in Fluorenone-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Efficient Hydrogen Peroxide Photosynthesis.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) photosynthesis from molecular oxygen and water offers a sustainable route for decentralized oxidant generation, yet elucidating the molecular-level active sites for oxygen activation in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) remains challenging. Herein, we report a fluorenone-containing COF, FO-Tp, as an efficient photocatalyst for H2O2 production, delivering a rate nearly ten times higher than that of fluorene-based COF, highlighting the crucial contribution of fluorenone carbonyls to photocatalytic oxygen reduction. The fluorenone carbonyls facilitate photogenerated-elec

The Role of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase-Protein Kinase in C4 Photosynthesis: Insights from Zea mays Mutant Analysis.

Understanding the regulation of enzyme activity involved in photosynthesis is essential for engineering enhanced carbon fixation in crops. In C4 plants, the enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC, EC 4.1.1.31) is one of the most abundant leaf enzymes and plays an essential role in photosynthetic carbon dioxide (CO2) fixation. The enzyme also plays a key role in central metabolism (e.g., providing intermediates to the citric acid cycle) and therefore must be highly regulated to coordinate its activity. The regulation of PEPC activity can occur allosterically by glucose 6-phosphate activat

Light-stimulated cell expansion in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) leaves. I. Growth can occur without photosynthesis.

Cell expansion in dicotyledonous leaves is strongly stimulated by bright white light (WL), at least in part as a result of light-induced acidification of the cell walls. It has been proposed that photosynthetic reactions are required for light-stimulated transport processes across plasma membranes of leaf cells, including proton excretion. The involvement of photosynthesis in growth and wall acidification of primary leaves of bean has been tested by inhibiting photosynthesis in two ways: by reducing chlorophyll content of intact plants with tentoxin (TX) and by treating leaf discs with 3-(3,4-

Red emissive carbon dots derived from raspberry leaves for enhanced photosynthesis in pea (Pisum sativum L.) seedlings.

Nanomaterials are emerging as promising regulators for boosting crop photosynthesis and plant growth in sustainable agriculture. Herein, red emissive carbon dots (R-CDs) were solvothermally synthesized using waste raspberry leaves as the biomass source. The obtained R-CDs display emission spectra that overlap well with the red-light absorption region of chlorophyll. Pot-cultivation assays on pea seedlings verified that R-CDs exert obvious concentration-dependent growth-promoting effects, with 0.75 mg mL-1 identified as the optimal concentration. At this concentration, seedlings root and shoot

Light intensity regulates photosynthesis and biochemical profiles of the calcifying macroalga Corallina pilulifera under varying seawater temperatures.

Accelerated global climate warming has aggravated seawater thermal elevation and intensity of marine heatwaves. Meanwhile, light intensity constitutes another pivotal abiotic driver regulating growth of macroalgae. To disentangle the combined interactive effects of light intensity and seawater temperature on growth performance of calcifying macroalga Corallina pilulifera, a 14-day indoor controlled incubation assay was implemented with two distinct light regimes (60 and 120 μmol photons m-2 s-1) and three thermal gradients (17 °C, 21 °C, and 25 °C). Statistical analyses indicated that temperat

ALKBH10B mediated epitranscriptomic regulation enhances drought tolerance of Arabidopsis thaliana via hormonal cross-talk and sustained photosynthesis.

The m⁶A demethylase ALKBH10B emerges as a crucial post-transcriptional regulator of hormonal crosstalk, photosynthetic maintenance, and mitochondrial energy metabolism to fine-tune plant stress adaptation to drought. Epitranscriptomic N⁶-methyladenosine (m⁶A) mRNA modification has emerged as an important regulatory layer of gene expression and protein synthesis in plant stress adaptation. In this study, expression profiling revealed that drought stress induces a global reprogramming of the m6A machinery in Arabidopsis thaliana, with the m6A demethylase ALKBH10B exhibiting a more pronounced tim
