The evaluation of nitric oxide scavenging activity of certain Indian medicinal plants in vitro: a preliminary study.

The plant extracts of 17 commonly used Indian medicinal plants were examined for their possible regulatory effect on nitric oxide (NO) levels using sodium nitroprusside as an NO donor in vitro. Most of the plant extracts tested demonstrated direct scavenging of NO and exhibited significant activity. The potency of scavenging activity was in the following order: Alstonia scholaris > Cynodon dactylon > Morinda citrifolia > Tylophora indica > Tectona grandis > Aegle marmelos (leaf) > Momordica charantia > Phyllanthus niruri > Ocimum sanctum > Tinospora cordifolia (hexane extract) = Coleus ambonic

Semi-Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Phyllanthin Derivatives as Potential Neuroprotective Agents.

Oxidative stress is responsible for the functional loss and sensory impairment of neurons, which leads to progressive loss of brain and spinal cord cells and contributes significantly to several neurological disorders, thus eventually resulting in brain atrophy and death. This study involves the isolation of lignans, including phyllanthin, hypophyllanthin, and nirtetraline, from Phyllanthus amarus. Furthermore, the phyllanhtin was semi-synthetically modified to give phyllanthin oxadiazole derivatives and was evaluated for neuroprotective activity in scopolamine-injured neuroblastoma-2a (N2A) c

(-)-Englerin-A Has Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects Independent of TRPC4 and 5.

Recently, we found that the deletion of TRPC5 leads to increased inflammation and pain-related behaviour in two animal models of arthritis. (-)-Englerin A (EA), an extract from the East African plant Phyllanthus engleri has been identified as a TRPC4/5 agonist. Here, we studied whether or not EA has any anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties via TRPC4/5 in the carrageenan model of inflammation. We found that EA treatment in CD1 mice inhibited thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, EA significantly reduced the volume of carrageenan-induced paw

Corilagin attenuates osteoclastic osteolysis by enhancing HO-1 and inhibiting ROS.

Chinese herbal medicine has well-established therapeutic effects in various diseases. Corilagin (Cor), a gallic acid tannin in Phyllanthus niruri L., has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in many diseases. However, its role in osteoclast-related bone diseases has not been determined. In vitro, bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) were extracted and isolated to differentiate into osteoclasts. The effects of Cor on osteoclast formation, bone resorption, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were performed. In addition, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot an
