Effects of visual thermal cues on thermal perception and thermoregulation while cycling in virtual reality.

Thermal perception and regulation are essential for physical exercise. The hue-heat hypothesis suggests that an environment's color temperature, e.g., warm reddish lighting or cold bluish lighting, affects thermal perception and regulation. Virtual reality (VR) enables immersion in any environment. Previous work showed that a VR environment can affect how warm or cold users feel during sedentary VR experiences. However, it is unclear whether such visual thermal cues also influence physiological and perceptual responses during physical exercise. Therefore, we conducted a controlled VR experimen

Quantitative exposure-response relations between physical workload and prevalence of lateral epicondylitis in a working population.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis is a common work-related musculoskeletal disorder. The objective of this study was to identify risk factors associated with lateral epicondylitis among active workers. METHODS: Seven-hundred thirty-three workers in 12 Washington worksites participated in structured interviews, physical examinations, and individual exposure assessments of biomechanical and psychosocial factors. Multivariable logistic modeling was used. RESULTS: Thirty-eight subjects (5.2%) had lateral epicondylitis. Age (36-50 years-old), being female, and low social support at work were sign

Exploring The Physiological and Physical Basis of RPE Responses in Soccer: A Comparative Analysis of Internal and External Load Determinants Across Different Training Drills.

This study investigated the relationships between Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and various objective internal and external training load measures across multiple drill types in youth academy soccer players, a comparative approach that has been rarely examined. Forty-six male outfield soccer players (16.3 ± 0.4 years) from two under-17 academy-level teams competing in a city-level league, training three times per week with weekend matches, were monitored over two weeks during regular training. Data included RPE (CR-10 scale), heart rate responses (HRaverage, HRmax), and external load variab

Effects of set-repetition configuration in eccentric exercise on muscle damage and the repeated bout effect.

The number of eccentric contractions is a factor affecting the magnitude of muscle damage; however, it is unknown whether set-repetition configurations for the same total number of eccentric contractions affect the muscle damage. The present study investigated whether different set-repetition configurations would result in different force output during eccentric exercise and different magnitude of muscle damage following the first and second exercise bouts. Ten non-resistance-trained men (26.1 ± 4.1 years) performed two bouts of eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors of each arm (4 bouts in t

Gain in mass density of bone following strenuous physical activity.

A group of 223 military recruits aged 18-21 years underwent strenuous physical training for a period of 14 weeks. The absolute bone density of the distal tibia in both lower limbs was measured before the training period and at its end. The density was determined by the Compton scattering technique, which has been developed in our laboratory; this method provides the bone mass of all bone constituents per unit volume. The distribution curve of the bone density in both tibiae shifted to higher values at the end of the training period. The mean bone density in the right and left tibia increased s

Exercise-induced hypoxaemia in highly trained athletes.

Traditionally, the pulmonary system has not been considered the limiting factor in determining maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in healthy individuals since arterial oxygen-haemoglobin saturation is thought to remain high during intense exercise. However, there appears to be a major exception to this rule. Recent evidence suggests that arterial hypoxaemia results during heavy exercise in well trained individuals with a high VO2max. Further, the degree of arterial desaturation is inversely related to VO2max. This exercise-induced hypoxaemia does not appear to be due to hypoventilation although at

Heatstroke. Underlying processes and lifesaving management.

Heatstroke occurs during intense physical exertion or environmental exposure to heat without exertion. The ability to eliminate heat is limited by volume depletion, cardiac and vascular insufficiency, and skin disorders or protective coverings that prevent sweating and evaporative heat loss. Also, many drugs predispose patients to heatstroke by impairing normal thermoregulatory function. Critical management strategies include (1) recognition of hyperthermia, (2) rapid cooling, and (3) supportive care and observation for heat-related complications of tissue injury (eg, hepatic failure, renal fa

Effect of combination of stresses on myocardial metabolism.

The effect of hypoxia, exercise, and thermal stress on myocardial metabolism have been widely investigated, but little attention has been paid to studying the effects of a combination of these stress. The influence of hypoxia as modified by physical exertion (swimming) and cold stress was therefore studied. The parameters investigated included myocardial glycogen and noradrenaline, serum free fatty acid, adrenal ascorbic acid, and adrenal weight. It was observed that maximal stress was produced when hypoxia was combined with physical exertion. No suppression of cold-induced lipolysis by hypoxi

Warming Up Body and Mind: Combined Cognitive and Exercise Priming Improves 1-Mile Time Trial Performance in Recreational Runners.

Combined cognitive and physical warmups can improve sport and exercise performance more than standard physical only warmups. The effects of combined warmups on running have yet to be determined. Accordingly, the aim was to compare the effects of combined and standard warmups on 1-mile time trial performance. Experienced recreational runners (11 males, 14 females) completed three counter-balanced sessions. In each session, they completed one of three warmups (physical only, physical plus low cognitive load, physical plus high cognitive load) immediately followed by four laps of a 400 m outdoor

Lifting and pregnancy outcomes: feasibility of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The highest incidence of preterm birth (18%) occurs in Africa but the causes are largely unknown. Some studies have reported adverse effects of maternal physical exertion on birth outcomes. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) is proposed to determine the effectiveness of an intervention reducing lifting and carrying in pregnant women in reducing preterm birth and low birthweight. AIMS: To test the feasibility and acceptability of the proposed lift-less intervention RCT. METHODS: We recruited pregnant women and midwives from antenatal clinics within the Greater Accra Region of Gha

Determinants and magnitudes of manual force strengths and joint moments during two-handed standing maximal horizontal pushing and pulling.

Pushing and pulling are common occupational exertions that are increasingly associated with musculoskeletal complaints. This study focuses on the sensitivity of shoulder capacity to gender, handle height, exertion type (push or pull) and handle orientation for these tasks. All factors except for handle orientation influenced unilateral and total manual force strength (p < 0.01), with exertion type being the most influential. Interaction effects also existed between handle height and exertion type. Additionally, joint moments at the shoulders and low back were influenced by all factors studied

Acute Caffeine Intake Reduces Perceived Exertion But Not Muscle Pain during Moderate Intensity Cycling Exercise in Women with Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Exacerbated perceived exertion and muscle pain responses during exercise might limit physical activity practice in fibromyalgia patients. Thus, nutritional strategies that can reduce perceived exertion and muscle pain during exercise in fibromyalgia patients would be useful. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acute caffeine intake on the perceptions of exertion and muscle pain during a moderate intensity exercise in women with fibromyalgia. METHOD: Using a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled and crossover experimental design, eleven sedentary wom

Increasing Physical Activity and Participation in People With Multiple Sclerosis: A Review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic progressive disease of the central nervous system (CNS) affecting >2.5 million people worldwide. Damage to neurons in the CNS causes various sensorimotor and cognitive symptoms, such as fatigue, pain, spasticity, memory deficits, and impairment of mobility. Until the late 1990s, it was believed that symptoms of MS would be worsened with physical exertion and people with MS were encouraged to limit physical activity and exertion. Not only has emerging evidence suggested that physical activity, including exercise, is safe for people with MS, there is also evi

Rating of perceived exertion as a tool for managing exercise intensity during pregnancy: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: During pregnancy, international guidelines recommend ≥150 min of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, with an intensity perceived as fairly light to somewhat hard on the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale (ranging from 6 'no exertion' to 20 'maximal exertion', corresponding to 60% to 80% of maximum heart rate). However, the determination and monitoring of exercise intensity seem to be a particular source of confusion, and the most effective method to monitor exercise intensity remains uncertain. This study aimed to examine existing research on the correl

Capturing the Complex Relationship Between Internal and External Training Load: A Data-Driven Approach.

BACKGROUND: Training load is typically described in terms of internal and external load. Investigating the coupling of internal and external training load is relevant to many sports. Here, continuous kernel-density estimation (KDE) may be a valuable tool to capture and visualize this coupling. AIM: Using training load data in speed skating, we evaluated how well bivariate KDE plots describe the coupling of internal and external load and differentiate between specific training sessions, compared to training impulse scores or intensity distribution into training zones. METHODS: On-ice training

Sensitivity and Specificity of Exercise Intolerance on Graded Exertion Testing for Diagnosing Sport-Related Concussion: A Systematic Review and Exploratory Meta-Analysis.

Abstract There is no single gold standard test to diagnose sport-related concussion (SRC). Concussion-related exercise intolerance, that is, inability to exercise to the individual's appropriate level due to exacerbation of concussion-like symptoms, is a frequent finding in athletes early after SRC that has not been systematically evaluated as a diagnostic test of SRC. We performed a systematic review and proportional meta-analysis of studies that evaluated graded exertion testing in athletes after SRC. We also included studies of exertion testing in healthy athletic participants without SRC t

Methods for Modulating and Measuring Neuromuscular Exertion in C. elegans.

The nematode C. elegans has been used widely to study the genetic and cellular basis of behavior. Yet the laboratory conditions under which it is typically studied offer only a narrow glimpse into the richness of natural behaviors this remarkable animal evolved over 500 million years of evolution. For example, burrowing behavior naturally occurs in the wild, but it remains understudied. Our group studies burrowing in an attempt to expand our understanding of the natural behavioral repertoire of C. elegans. Aside from being an interesting and tractable behavior, burrowing is experimentally usef
