Evidence of weight-based representations of gravitational motion.

A hypothesis gaining increasing popularity is that laypeople's representations of physical phenomena might be driven by internalized physical laws. In three experiments, we tested if such hypothesis holds true for the representation of gravitational motion. Participants were presented with realistic, real-scale virtual spheres falling vertically downward from about 2 m high. The spheres appeared to be made of either polystyrene or wood. In Experiment 1, participants adjusted the falling motion pattern until it appeared to be natural. In Experiment 2, they compared the perceived naturalness of

Phenomenology of repetitive and restrictive behaviors and sensory phenomena in neurodevelopmental disorders: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive and restrictive behaviors (RRB) include simple motor stereotypes, tics and complex ritualized and rigid behaviors that are core symptoms in neurodevelopmental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome (TS) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Sensory phenomena (SP) are uncomfortable feelings, including bodily sensations, sense of inner tension, "just-right" perceptions, feelings of incompleteness, or "urge-only" phenomena, which have been described to precede, trigger, or accompany RRB. In such clinical contexts RRB and SP may be considered c

Swarmalator networks with multihop coupling.

Swarmalator systems intertwine two forms of collective behavior, swarming and synchronization, leading to the emergence of specific space-time patterns. Scaling the model to real-world phenomena and technical applications is problematic due to the assumption of global coupling among all swarmalators, which is impractical under physical constraints on interaction range. Conversely, purely local coupling was shown to be infeasible. To address this gap, we introduce and evaluate the concept of multihop coupling for swarmalators, which preserves the locality of physical interactions but propagates

Recent progress in the free energy landscape theory and its application to aging and slow Arrhenius process.

The Helmholtz free energy landscape (FEL) picture is known to provide a theoretical framework which can explain various aspects of non-equilibrium systems. I first show that the landscape for various thermodynamic potentials including enthalpy and Gibbs free energy can be properly defined. In order to find physics behind two complex phenomena observed in non-equilibrium systems, protocol-dependent aging and the slow Arrhenius process (SAP), I introduce phenomenologically a delayed response of the FEL to a perturbation. As for the aging, the delayed response to temperature change is shown to pr

Anxiolytics and sedative/hypnotics dependence.

Anxiolytics and sedative/hypnotics are commonly used drugs. Benzodiazepines have largely replaced barbiturate and non-barbiturate anxiolytics and sedative/hypnotics as they are as effective and safer. Experiments in laboratory animals have shown that chronic administration of benzodiazepines tested to date can induce physical dependence. The severity of the withdrawal syndrome is clearly related to the dose, duration of administration and elimination rate of the drugs. It is now also clear that high doses of barbiturates and benzodiazepines can induce physical dependence in humans. In addition

Hostage hallucinations. Visual imagery induced by isolation and life-threatening stress.

The literature on hallucinatory experiences of hostage victims is reviewed. The phenomenology is examined in 30 case studies involving 31 persons, including ex-prisoners of war and victims of rape, kidnapping, terrorism, robbery, and "UFO abductions." The victims were subjected to conditions of isolation, visual deprivation, restraint on physical movement, physical abuse, and the threat of death. For eight victims, these conditions were sufficient to produce a progression of visual hallucinations from simple geometric images to complex memory images coupled with dissociation. The other 23 vict

Orbital-Selective Mott Transition Effects and Nontrivial Topology of Iron Chalcogenide.

The iron-based superconductor FeSe_{1-x}Te_{x} has recently gained significant attention as a host of two distinct physical phenomena: (i) Majorana zero modes that can serve as potential topologically protected qubits, and (ii) a realization of the orbital-selective Mott transition. In this Letter, we connect these two phenomena and provide new insights into the interplay between strong electronic correlations and nontrivial topology in FeSe_{1-x}Te_{x}. Using linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW plus dynamical mean-field theory, we show that the topologically protected Dirac surface st

Do hockey players need aerobic fitness? Relation between VO2max and fatigue during high-intensity intermittent ice skating.

The primary objective of this study was to assess the relationship between aerobic capacity, as measured by the VO(2)max test, and recovery from high-intensity intermittent exercise. Eleven female collegiate hockey players agreed to participate. Subjects skated 5 1-lap intervals around the hockey rink at maximal intensity with a 30-second recovery period between skates. The VO(2)max test was performed on a motor-driven treadmill after a modified Bruce protocol. A fatigue index was calculated by measuring the total increase in skate time from trial 1 to trial 5. This fatigue index was then corr

Mind to Move: A Narrative Review of Individualized Running Biomechanics Beyond the Spring-Mass Model.

Running biomechanics has long questioned whether a universally optimal running pattern exists. Current evidence indicates that no single technique is optimal for all individuals. Instead, runners self-optimize their movement according to anatomical structure, neuromuscular capacity, experience, and environmental constraints. This narrative review first examines the diversity of running patterns and the concept of self-organization, emphasizing that multiple biomechanical configurations can yield comparable running economy when aligned with individual characteristics. We then analyze how biomec

Physiology and biomechanics of prone restraint respiration.

There is a debate over whether the effect of prone restraint on respiration can lead to cardiac arrest. In itself, the prone or prone restrained posture does not likely compromise ventilation to any clinically significant degree for a detainee who is passive and calm, as a number of prone restraint studies have shown. However, these studies were not able to replicate an anxious, distressed or intoxicated (alcohol or drugs) detainee who is struggling and being actively held down. This review examines the physiology and biomechanics of respiration, highlighting the differences between upright po

Knee osteoarthritis rehabilitation: an integrated framework of exercise, nutrition, biomechanics, and physical therapist guidance-a narrative review.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent, debilitating chronic joint disease characterized by pain, stiffness, and functional limitations. Non-pharmacological rehabilitation is a fundamental management strategy. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on an integrated KOA rehabilitation framework, including: exercise therapy (aerobic, resistance, neuromuscular training), which reduces pain and improves function through enhanced muscle activation and joint stability; dietary interventions (weight management and anti-inflammatory diets), which lower mechanical load and systemic inflammation;

Construction and mechanism analysis of flame-retardant, energy-storage and transparent bio-based composites based on natural cellulose template.

With the proposal of sustainable development strategy, bio-based energy storage transparent wood (TW) has shown broad application value in green buildings, cold chain transportation, and optoelectronic device fields. However, its application in most fields is limited due to its own flammability. In this study, epoxy resin, triethyl phosphate (TEP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were introduced into delignified balsa wood template by vacuum pressure impregnation, and bio-based TW/PEG/TEP integrating flame retardant, high strength and phase-change energy-storage performance was prepared. Magnetic Janus micromotors for fluorescence biosensing of tacrolimus in oral fluids.

Tacrolimus (FK506) is a macrolide lactone immunosuppressive drug that is commonly used in transplanted patients to avoid organ rejection. FK506 exhibits high inter- and intra-patient pharmacokinetic variability, making monitoring necessary for organ graft survival. This work describes the development of a novel bioassay for monitoring FK506. The bioassay is based on using polycaprolactone-based (PCL) magnetic Janus micromotors and a recombinant chimera receptor that incorporates the immunophilin tacrolimus binding protein 1A (FKBP1A) tagged with Emerald Green Fluorescent Protein (EmGFP). The a

Affinity zone identification approach for joint control of PM2.5 pollution over China.

In recent years, the Chinese government has made great efforts to jointly control and prevent air pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM2.5). However, these efforts are challenged by technical constraints due to the significant temporal and spatial heterogeneity of PM2.5 across China. In this study, the Affinity Zone Identification Approach (AZIA), which combines rotated principal component analysis (RPCA) with revised clustering analysis, was developed and employed to regionalize PM2.5 pollution in China based on data from 1496 air quality monitoring sites recorded from 2013 to 201

Anatomy, physiology, and physics of the peripheral vestibular system.

Many medical doctors consider vertigo and dizziness as the major, almost obligatory complaints in patients with vestibular disorders. In this chapter, we will explain that vestibular disorders result in much more diverse and complex complaints. Many of these other complaints are unfortunately often misinterpreted and incorrectly classified as psychogenic. When we really understand the function of the vestibular system, it becomes quite obvious why patients with vestibular disorders complain about a loss of visual acuity, imbalance, fear of falling, cognitive and attentional problems, fatigue t

Finite element modelling of the glenohumeral capsule can help assess the tested region during a clinical exam.

The objective of this research was to examine the efficacy of evaluating the region of the glenohumeral capsule being tested by clinical exams for shoulder instability using finite element (FE) models of the glenohumeral joint. Specifically, the regions of high capsule strain produced by glenohumeral joint positions commonly used during a clinical exam were identified. Kinematics that simulated a simple translation test with an anterior load at three external rotation angles were applied to a validated, subject-specific FE model of the glenohumeral joint at 60° of abduction. Maximum principal

Characterization of the role of physicochemical factors on the hydrolysis of dipyrone.

Dipyrone is a prodrug which is used mainly for its analgesic and antipyretic effects. After oral intake, dipyrone is rapidly hydrolyzed to its main metabolite, 4-methylaminoantipyrine (4-MAA), from which many other metabolites are produced by enzymatic reactions. Even though it is well known that dipyrone is a prodrug and hydrolyzed non-enzymatically, in most of the studies of dipyrone the prodrug form is tested using in vitro methodologies, which do not represent or predict the actual in vivo activity of dipyrone. In this study, we characterize the hydrolysis kinetics of dipyrone as functions

Functional aspects of strepsirrhine lumbar vertebral bodies and spinous processes.

The relationship between form and function in the lumbar vertebral column has been well documented among platyrrhines and especially catarrhines, while functional studies of postcranial morphology among strepsirrhines have concentrated predominantly on the limbs. This morphometric study investigates biomechanically relevant attributes of the lumbar vertebral morphology of 20 species of extant strepsirrhines. With this extensive sample, our goal is to address the influence of positional behavior on lumbar vertebral form while also assessing the effects of body size and phylogenetic history. The
