During the period September 1981 to August 1985, we investigated every reported case of measles in Oklahoma to confirm the diagnosis, to determine the source, and to identify contacts to prevent spread of the disease. During this time, 33 serologically and/or epidemiologically confirmed cases were investigated. Nine (27%) persons acquired measles in a medical office or clinic waiting area. Ambulatory blood pressure profiles were obtained with the Remler M2000, a portable semiautomatic blood pressure recorder, in 38 chronically treated hypertensive patients who continued to have blood pressures measured by their physician greater than 140 mm Hg systolic and greater than 89 mm Hg diastolic. Two rapid enzyme immunoassay test kits were compared with culture for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis endocervical infections. Endocervical samples for C trachomatis culture and the two enzyme immunoassay tests were evaluated from 502 county health department and Planned Parenthood patients. The prevalence of infection in this population was 12%. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Ovid MEDLINE and the Cochrane database were searched using the terms urinary incontinence, stress incontinence, overactive bladder, urge incontinence, elderly, and geriatrics.
MAIN MESSAGE: A variety of conditions affecting the nervous system and the lower urinary tract can affect bladder function and UI. Among older patients the effects of decreased cognition and impaired mobility can be substantial, and environmental barriers can play a role.
