Practical Review on Delayed Primary Closure: Basic Science and Clinical Applications.

Wound healing complications present a significant burden on both patients and health-care systems, and understanding wound healing principles is crucial across medical and surgical specialties to help mitigate such complications. One of these longstanding principles, specifically delayed primary closure (DPC), described as mechanically closing a wound after several days of secondary intention healing, lacks clear consensus on its definition, indications, and outcomes. This practical review examines wound healing fundamentals, focusing on DPC, its execution, indications, and comparative outcome

Comparative genomics of two newly isolated Dehalococcoides strains and an enrichment using a genus microarray.

Comparative genomics of Dehalococcoides strains and an enrichment were performed using a microarray targeting genes from all available sequenced genomes of the Dehalococcoides genus. The microarray was designed with 4305 probe sets to target 98.6% of the open-reading frames from strains 195, CBDB1, BAV1 and VS. The microarrays were validated and applied to query the genomes of two recently isolated Dehalococcoides strains, ANAS1 and ANAS2, and their enrichment source (ANAS) to understand the genome-physiology relationships. Strains ANAS1 and ANAS2 can both couple the reduction of trichloroethe

Scientific parallels of sleep physiology in the Qur'anic narrative of the Companions of the Cave "the Cave Sleepers".

BACKGROUND: The Qur'anic narrative of the Companions of the Cave (Cave Sleepers, in Arabic "Ashab al-Kahf") describes young believers who experienced a prolonged, divinely induced sleep in a cave, as recounted in verses 18:9-26 of Sūrah Al-Kahf. This account, while spiritual in nature, presents details that parallel modern scientific concepts in sleep physiology, particularly regarding environmental influences and bodily preservation during extended immobility. OBJECTIVE: To explore scientific parallels between the Qur'anic description of the Cave Sleepers' prolonged sleep and contemporary sl

A novel degree of sex difference in laryngeal physiology of Xenopus muelleri: behavioral and evolutionary implications.

Characterizing sex and species differences in muscle physiology can contribute to a better understanding of proximate mechanisms underlying behavioral evolution. In Xenopus, the laryngeal muscle's ability to contract rapidly and its electromyogram potentiation allows males to produce calls that are more rapid and intensity-modulated than female calls. Prior comparative studies have shown that some species lacking typical male features of vocalizations sometimes show reduced sex differences in underlying laryngeal physiology. To further understand the evolution of sexually differentiated laryng

Comparing the Clinical Outcomes of Fractional Flow Reserve and Intravascular Imaging in Guiding Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fractional flow reserve (FFR) and intravascular imaging (IVI) are both used to guide management of intermediate coronary stenoses, but comparative outcome data remain limited. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE/PubMed and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception through September 1, 2025, for randomized controlled trials and comparative observational studies directly comparing physiology-guided versus intravascular imaging-guided strategies for angiographically intermediate coronary stenoses. Outcomes included major adverse cardiovascular events (

The reno-pineal axis: A novel role for melatonin.

The pineal gland is a tiny endocrine gland whose physiologic role has been the focus of much research and much more speculation over the past century. This mini-review discusses recent findings which correlate melatonin and renal physiology, and postulates the presence of a "reno-pineal axis." Drawing lessons from comparative endocrinology, while quoting human data, it advocates the need to study the "reno-pineal axis" in greater detail.

Field physiology in the aquatic realm: ecological energetics and diving behavior provide context for elucidating patterns and deviations.

Comparative physiology has developed a rich understanding of the physiological adaptations of organisms, from microbes to megafauna. Despite extreme differences in size and a diversity of habitats, general patterns are observed in their physiological adaptations. Yet, many organisms deviate from the general patterns, providing an opportunity to understand the importance of ecology in determining the evolution of unusual adaptations. Aquatic air-breathing vertebrates provide unique study systems in which the interplay between ecology, physiology and behavior is most evident. They must perform b

Blood cell morphology, ultrastructure and cytochemistry in marine mammals: a narrative comparative review.

Marine mammals exhibit a range of hematological features associated with diving, hypoxia, and life in a high-pressure aquatic environment. This narrative review synthesizes available morphological, ultrastructural, and cytochemical data on blood cells in cetaceans, pinnipeds, and sirenians, with the aim of identifying common patterns and sources of interspecific variability. Erythrocytes in marine mammals are often relatively large and display species-specific differences in shape and indices that may contribute to differences in oxygen transport physiology and blood rheology. Leukocyte morpho

Infrared thermography: A non-invasive window into thermal physiology.

Infrared thermography is a non-invasive technique that measures mid to long-wave infrared radiation emanating from all objects and converts this to temperature. As an imaging technique, the value of modern infrared thermography is its ability to produce a digitized image or high speed video rendering a thermal map of the scene in false colour. Since temperature is an important environmental parameter influencing animal physiology and metabolic heat production an energetically expensive process, measuring temperature and energy exchange in animals is critical to understanding physiology, especi

[Age dynamics of secretory, absorptive, buffer ability of the mucosa inside the human nose].

The problem of age-related functional changes of organs and systems of the human body is one of the urgent problems of modern physiology and gerontology. The most important, complex system of human body is respiratory system, especially its «first line of defense» - the nasal cavity. Functional parameters of the nasal cavity undergo a number of specific changesat the stages of postnatal ontogenesis, the study of which has not only scientific value but also practical value for experimental physiology and clinical medicine. The article presents data on the age dynamics and adaptability of such f

Frogs, filters, and faraway lands: honoring the inimitable neuroethology of Peter Narins.

This Special Issue of the Journal of Comparative Physiology A continues the journal's tradition of recognizing pioneering neuroethologists by honoring Peter M. Narins. A former Associate Editor of the Journal and an influential colleague to researchers worldwide, Peter has profoundly shaped the field. The 21 papers collected here - authored by collaborators, friends, and former students - highlight how his signature integrative and evolutionary approach to the study of animal communication continues to inspire neuroethological research on anurans and other model species.

[Some aspects of vagal control of exocrine pancreatic secretion in rabbits (author's transl)].

Stimulation of the thoracic vagus nerves in anesthetized rabbit appears to act only by increasing the amylase content of pancreatic juice. Stimulation of the abdominal vagus nerve slightly increased the flow of juice and clearly its amylase content, effects which were respectively reduced and abolished by atropine. The vagal control of the exocrine pancreas in rabbits shows substantial differences when compared with other herbivorous monogastric species such as horse and pig.

A physiological and histological atlas of reproduction in the North American deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus).

The North American deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) exhibits extensive diversity in morphology, physiology, and life history across its broad range. These traits have propelled the deer mouse to model system status across several fields within the biological sciences. Nonetheless, we still lack basic knowledge about some important aspects of this species' biology. For example, limited information about the deer mouse's reproductive physiology remains a significant barrier to developing genetic tools for the species and for advancing our current understanding of how this species has been so

Distinct patterns in study techniques and intrinsic challenges in nursing students' self-directed learning: an exploratory, comparative qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Self-directed learning supports nursing students' professional development by enabling them to deepen their theoretical knowledge, particularly in complex foundational subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. Becoming a self-directed learner is therefore crucial for academic success and continued professional growth. However, intrinsic (student-related) factors can challenge students' efforts to engage in effective self-directed learning, especially in these demanding subjects. Despite this, little is known about which intrinsic factors first-year nursing students pe

Randomised study comparing heart rate measurement in newly born infants using a monitor incorporating electrocardiogram and pulse oximeter versus pulse oximeter alone.

AIM: To determine whether IntelliVue (ECG plus Masimo pulse oximeter (PO)) measures heart rate (HR) in low-risk newborns more quickly than Nellcor PO (PO alone). METHODS: Unmasked parallel group randomised (1:1) study. RESULTS: We studied 100 infants, 47 randomised to IntelliVue, 53 to Nellcor. Time to first HR was shorter with IntelliVue ECG than Nellcor (median (IQR) 24 (19, 39) vs 48 (36, 69) s, p<0.001). There was no difference in time to display both HR and SpO2 (52 (47, 76) vs 48 (36, 69) s, p=0.507). IntelliVue PO displayed initial bradycardia more often than the Nellcor (55% vs 6%).

Cyclic AMP in secretin choleresis. Evidence for a regulatory role in man and baboons but not in dogs.

Cyclic AMP output in the bile in response to intravenous secretin was measured in 11 patients, 12 baboons, and 15 dogs. Secretin was given to patients with bile drainage tubes as an intravenous bolus (1 U per kg). In baboons and dogs both secretin infusion (4 U per kg per hr) and bolus injection (1 U per kg) were used. In baboons cyclic AMP was also determined in liver, extrahepatic duct tissue, and in perfusate from isolated segments of extrahepatic bile ducts. Secretin induced a marked choleresis in all three species. In humans, biliary cyclic AMP concentration increased an average (+/- 1 SE
