Schistosomiasis is a human parasitic disease caused by the Schistosoma species and is recognised in public health as second to malaria in terms of its socioeconomic impact on humans. Four local plants native to many tribes in Ghana and known for their medicinal properties against some diseases were assessed for their cercaricidal activity against Schistosoma mansoni cercariae. The plants, namely, Newbouldia laevis stem bark (NLSB), Spathodea campanulata stem bark (SCSB), Momordica charantia leaves (MCL), and Ocimum viride leaves (OVL), were extracted for their active metabolites using methanol

Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. has extensive use in traditional medicine and diverse biological activities due to its rich phytochemical profile. In this study, firstly, the physicochemical characteristics of the plant material were evaluated, revealing a high content of extractive substances (17.684%), followed by ash (6.740%) and moisture (5.000%). Among the bioactive constituents, tannins were the most abundant (7.439%). Analysis of macroelements in the plant ash showed K (11.4330 mg/g) as the predominant element, followed by Mg (97.13 mg/g), Ca (75.30 mg/g), and Na (72.41 mg/g). Trace elemen

Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp., commonly known as Indonesian bay leaf or Daun salam, is widely used as a culinary and traditional botanical resource. However, region-specific information on its lipophilic constituents remains limited, and the sustainability implications of solvent-dependent phytochemical profiling are rarely addressed. This study characterized the GC-MS-detectable volatile lipophilic constituents of a selected nonpolar fraction of S. polyanthum leaves collected from Paniki Bawah, Mapanget District, Manado, Indonesia, using GC-MS, while evaluating solvent-related limitations

Seagrass meadows of Thalassia testudinum are key components of blue carbon ecosystems and effective bioindicators of environmental contamination due to their ability to incorporate both inorganic and organic pollutants. This study evaluated total mercury (T-Hg) concentrations and the qualitative occurrence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and secondary metabolites in T. testudinum collected from two sites with contrasting environmental pressures in the Colombian Caribbean: Cartagena Bay (CTG Bay) and the reference area within the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park (

Vitex agnus-castus L., a medicinal plant widespread in the Middle East and Europe, is traditionally used to treat various disorders. In this study, extracts from its leaves, collected in Algeria, were evaluated for their antioxidant, enzymatic, and antibacterial activities through in vitro and in silico studies. The hydroalcoholic extract was fractionated using solvents of varying polarity to isolate bioactive compounds with potential biological effects. Notable levels of total phenolics, flavonoids, and flavonols were detected in the dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extracts

This study investigated the phytochemical composition, antioxidant activity, and safety of Tectona grandis leaf extracts at four maturity stages. Ethanolic extracts were screened for secondary metabolites and analyzed using GC-MS, together with heavy metal determination, phenolic profiling, and antioxidant assays. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, saponins, and coumarins, with clear variation among leaf stages. GC-MS analysis detected multiple bioactive constituents, including phytol, n-decanoic acid, and heptadecenal. Thes

To understand how olives reconfigure their metabolism to face stress shock episodes, plants from the economically relevant olive (Olea europaea cv. Cobrançosa) were exposed to high UV-B radiation (UV-B, 12 kJ m-2 d-1) or heat shock (HS, 40 °C) for two consecutive days. The physiological responses and some important lipophilic compounds were evaluated immediately (day 0) and 30 days after UV-B or HS episodes. Both treatments induced a reduction of the olive physiological performance, particularly increasing cell membrane damages and proline pool and at the same time reducing chlorophyll levels,

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Petiveria alliacea L. (Phytolaccaceae) is used in folk medicine due to its antispasmodic, diuretic, hypoglycemic, abortive, anti-inflammatory and anticancerogenic properties. Although P. alliacea is considered toxic by people, its toxicity remains a concern since it is strongly dependent on the extraction method and the part of the plant used during tests. Even if some healers prefer to use the aerial parts in a liquefied form or by chewing them, instead of decoctions or infusions, no toxicological studies exist using whole dried stems and leaves.

Organic marker compounds (biomarkers) can be used to identify the sources of waterborne pollutants. This paper examines sterols and other alcohols in overland flow from pasture-based grazing systems, possible agricultural source materials and water extracts of these source materials as a preliminary step to developing chemical profiles that can be used for tracing pollutants. The biomarkers were quantified using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques. Analyses of plant material show that some pasture species contain unique compounds, enabling their identificatio

Rosa bracteata J.C.Wendl. is a thorny, clump-forming or trailing perennial evergreen shrub native to China. The current analysis was designed to explore the chemical constituents and determine the in vitro antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and antioxidant properties of the essential oils (EOs) of the stems, leaves, and flowers of Rosa bracteata for the first time. The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained through hydro-distillation was characterized by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID). INTRODUCTION: The red andong (Cordyline fruticosa (L) A. Chev.) plant, known for its potent anti-diarrheal properties and abundant anthocyanin pigments, has attracted significant research interest because of its strong antioxidant activity. This study aims to explore the biotechnological enhancement of red andong leaves through fermentation with Bacillus subtilis.
METHODS: This investigation examines incubation periods of 24, 48, and 72 hours to analyze the subsequent effects on total polyphenol content and antioxidant efficacy. Leaf extracts were prepared by maceration in 70% ethanol, and to

Stellaria pallida L. (Dumort.) is a species that belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family and has a broad range of secondary metabolites and therapeutic potential. In this study, the aerial parts of Stellaria pallida L. (S. pallida) were extracted by various organic solvents, viz. Chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and methanol, among others, were analyzed by GC/MS and HPLC-DAD to determine their chemical composition and antimicrobial properties. In addition, an in silico molecular docking analysis by AutoDock Vina was performed to evaluate the potential interactions between the identified phyto

This study aimed to acquire in-depth phytochemical and biological insights into the different extracts of Sargassum aquifolium and Galaxaura rugosa, due to the limited existing data on these species. GC/MS analysis of the unsaponifiable matter identified 27 compounds in S. aquifolium, including three phytosterols and two fatty alcohols, while G. rugosa contained 23 compounds. Fatty acid methyl ester profiling revealed six fatty acids in S. aquifolium and 21 in G. rugosa. Isolation led to the identification of six compounds from S. aquifolium (including two sterols and two fatty alcohols) and s

BACKGROUND: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) frequently arises from chronic exposure to acid and bile reflux, with secondary bile acids, such as deoxycholic acid (DCA), contributing to its pathogenesis through mechanisms involving reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative DNA damage, and resistance to apoptosis. The human endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates diverse anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and analgesic pathways implicated in disease modulation and may counteract the harmful effects of gastroesophageal reflux. Despite its therapeutic promise, effective pharmacological activation of the
