Survival of rats bearing advanced intracerebral F 98 tumors after glutathione depletion and microbeam radiation therapy: conclusions from a pilot project.

BACKGROUND: Resistance to radiotherapy is frequently encountered in patients with glioblastoma multiforme. It is caused at least partially by the high glutathione content in the tumour tissue. Therefore, the administration of the glutathione synthesis inhibitor Buthionine-SR-Sulfoximine (BSO) should increase survival time. METHODS: BSO was tested in combination with an experimental synchrotron-based treatment, microbeam radiation therapy (MRT), characterized by spatially and periodically alternating microscopic dose distribution. One hundred thousand F98 glioma cells were injected into the ri

Retrograde Tibio-Pedal Access for Revascularization of Lower-Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease Using a 6 Fr Slender Sheath: The "Pedal-First" Pilot Project.

OBJECTIVE: We studied the safety and efficacy of tibio-pedal access (TPA) as the sole primary access (ie, the "pedal-first" strategy) for revascularization of peripheral artery disease (PAD). METHODS: We reviewed a prospectively maintained database of patients where TPA was used as a primary access for retrograde diagnostic angiography and intervention. Patients suffering from symptomatic PAD and abnormal non-invasive testing were treated with the intention of using only ipsilateral TPA if there was antegrade flow in one of the three run-off vessels on ultrasound (US). Sugammadex aliquot pilot project in adults having elective surgical procedures - A pharmacoeconomic retrospective deidentified chart review to improve quality and cost of anesthesia care.

INTRODUCTION: Sugammadex is highly effective in reversing neuromuscular block, but costly and not without known complications. Subjectively determined empiric dosing of sugammadex for routine antagonism of neuromuscular block risks over- or under-dosing patients and leads to increases in drug acquisition costs, especially in markets where generics remain unavailable. We hypothesized that our recently implemented sugammadex aliquoting policy and its administration guided by quantitative neuromuscular monitoring would lower the cost of empirically dosed sugammadex antagonism. This retrospective

Pilot work of the 10K Chinese People Genomic Diversity Project along the Silk Road suggests a complex east-west admixture landscape and biological adaptations.

Genomic sources from China are underrepresented in the population-specific reference database. We performed whole-genome sequencing or genome-wide genotyping on 1,207 individuals from four linguistically diverse groups (1,081 Sinitic, 56 Mongolic, 40 Turkic, and 30 Tibeto-Burman people) living in North China included in the 10K Chinese People Genomic Diversity Project (10K_CPGDP) to characterize the genetic architecture and adaptative history of ethnic groups in the Silk Road Region of China. We observed a population split between Northwest Chinese minorities (NWCMs) and Han Chinese since the

Implementation of a School-Based Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program in an Urban Elementary School: Lessons Learned from a Pilot Evaluation Study of the Healthy Relationships Project.

Child-focused, school-based prevention is the most common type of universal prevention of child sexual abuse (CSA) utilized in the United States (U.S.). Implementation of school-wide CSA primary prevention programming in busy urban elementary schools in high-need communities can be complex, made even more so by the sensitive nature of the topic of CSA. The Healthy Relationships Project (HRP), created by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont, consists of manualized, developmentally-appropriate, CSA primary prevention curricula implemented since 1990 in 30 U.S. States. Informed by the Social Ecological Mo

Does age play a role in fever and neutropenia events and complications: A comparison of adolescents versus younger children with cancer at a tertiary care pediatric hospital, a pilot project.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults with cancer (AYA) are a complex group of patients. The development of fever and neutropenia (FN) is a potentially lethal complication of chemotherapy. Risk stratification of patients with FN has become increasingly valuable allowing for early intervention and to guide treatment type and duration appropriately. There are risk stratification guidelines that exist, but most are validated in young children with cancer (YCWC). AYA are frequently shown to have more numerous and severe side effects from chemotherapy. AIMS: This study aimed to identify whether

Early HIV diagnosis through use of rapid diagnosis test (RDT) in the community and direct link to HIV care: a pilot project for vulnerable populations in Athens, Greece.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis refers to a dysregulated host immune response to infection. It carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality, and its pathogenesis has yet to be fully elucidated. The main aim of this study was to identify prognostic hub genes for sepsis and to predict a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network that regulates the hub genes. METHODS: Six transcriptome datasets from the peripheral blood of septic patients were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The robust rank aggregation (RRA) method was used to screen differentially expressed genes (DEGs) across t

Developing and delivering a migraine disparities and diagnosis undergraduate medical educational program to underrepresented in medicine medical student members of the Student National Medical Association: A pilot project.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Migraine is underdiagnosed. On average, medical students have approximately 3 h of exposure to headache education throughout medical school training. Moreover, some medical students have racially-based biases in pain. There is a paucity of underrepresented in medicine (UIM) headache practitioners. UIM practitioners are more likely to practice in underserved communities and provider-patient ethnic concordance may help eliminate healthcare disparities. The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is an organization committed to supporting current and future UIM medical s
