The effect of the immobilization procedure on the conformation of alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) was investigated by recording the fluorescence spectra of native and immobilized AGP. A 20-nm red shift was obtained for the immobilized form of AGP compared with the emission maximum of 338 nm obtained for native AGP. After certain tear proteins had been found to be markers of duct cell activity in the rabbit lacrimal gland, different secretagogues were tested to increase volume and protein secretion. Carbamyl-choline and the peptides eledoisin and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) stimulated volume flux as well as secretion of the marker proteins indicating duct cell activation. Using renal arteries from young (6 months), mature (18 months) and old (70 months) rabbits, the effect of dopamine on 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) generation was studied. No significant differences in basal adenylate cyclase values were found in homogenates of renal artery from young, mature or old rabbits. In a study of 10 patients suffering from hypertension the results showed that combination treatment with prazosin, cyclopenthiazide and a beta-blocker produced a significant fall in blood pressure. We studied the effect of aspirin on beta-adrenergic receptors in lymphocytes from three groups of subjects: 5 asthmatic patients presenting sensitivity to aspirin, 10 asthmatic patients with tolerance to aspirin and a control group. To analyse the molecular mechanism of action of beta-adrenergic compounds in reducing the intraocular pressure, the binding of 125I-iodohydroxybenzylpindolol to bovine pigmented ciliary processes was studied.
