Catalytic fast pyrolysis of waste pine sawdust over solid base, acid and base-acid tandem catalysts.

Catalytic pyrolysis is an effective means for high-value utilization of biomass. This study investigated the effect of solid base catalysts (CaO, calcium aluminate catalysts CaAl-1, CaAl-2, CaAl-3), acid zeolite catalysts (ZSM-5, Fe/ZSM-5, Co/ZSM-5, Ni/ZSM-5, Cu/ZSM-5, Zn/ZSM-5) and base-acid tandem catalysts on pine sawdust pyrolysis using Py-GC/MS. Acid zeolite catalysts exhibited robust deoxidation and aromatization capabilities, favoring aromatics, while solid base catalysts yielded more phenols and ketones. Among the solid base catalysts, CaAl-3 (CaO-Ca12Al14O33) showed comparable deoxyge

Engineering novel phenolic foams with lignin extracted from pine wood residues via a new levulinic-acid assisted process.

Phenolic foams are typically produced from phenolic resins, using phenol and formaldehyde precursors. Therefore, common phenolic foams are non-sustainable, comprising growing environmental, health, and economic concerns. In this work, lignin extracted from pine wood residues using a "green" levulinic acid-based solvent, was used to partially substitute non-sustainable phenol. The novel engineered foams were systematically compared to foams composed of different types of commercially available technical lignins. Different features were analyzed, such as foam density, microstructure (electron mi

Management of overwintering pine sawyer beetle, Monochamus alternatus with colonized Beauveria bassiana ERL836.

Monochamus alternatus is a major forest pest that spreads pine wilt disease in pine trees as a vector of pine wilt nematodes. Chemical insecticides used as fumigants to control overwintering M. alternatus in forests are highly toxic to the environment, so we investigated entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana ERL836 as an eco-friendly and alternative material to control overwintering M. alternatus. In this work, we evaluated the insecticidal activity of B. bassiana ERL836 against M. alternatus adults, the possibility of fungal colonization on pine tree bark, and finally the control efficac

Nematicidal Activity of Benzyloxyalkanols against Pine Wood Nematode.

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is caused by the pine wood nematode (PWN; Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) and causes severe environmental damage to global pine forest ecosystems. The current strategies used to control PWN are mainly chemical treatments. However, the continuous use of these reagents could result in the development of pesticide-resistant nematodes. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to find potential alternatives to the currently used PWN control agents abamectin and emamectin. Benzyloxyalkanols (BzOROH; R = C2-C9) were synthesized and the nematicidal activity of the synthetic comp

Genome Sequencing of Rahnella victoriana JZ-GX1 Provides New Insights Into Molecular and Genetic Mechanisms of Plant Growth Promotion.

Genomic information for bacteria within the genus Rahnella remains limited. Rahnella sp. JZ-GX1 was previously isolated from the Pinus massoniana rhizosphere in China and shows potential as a plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacterium. In the present work, we combined the GridION Nanopore ONT and Illumina sequencing platforms to obtain the complete genome sequence of strain JZ-GX1, and the application effects of the strain in natural field environment was assessed. The whole genome of Rahnella sp. JZ-GX1 comprised a single circular chromosome (5,472,828 bp, G + C content of 53.53%) with 4,483 prot

Earthworm species in native and planted forests in Brazil.

Over 150 species of earthworms are known from the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, but many more are expected to live in this megadiverse biome. In the present study, we evaluated earthworm species occurrence and diversity in native and reforested areas in four National Forests in three Brazilian states: Três Barras National Forest (Santa Catarina), Irati and Piraí do Sul National Forests (Paraná) and Capão Bonito National Forest (São Paulo) using formalin and hand sorting methods. A total of 13 species were found, five exotic and eight natives (of which four were new, undescribed species), belo

Insect infestations and the persistence and functioning of oak-pine mixedwood forests in the mid-Atlantic region, USA.

Damage from infestations of Lymantria dispar L. in oak-dominated stands and southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann) in pine-dominated stands have far exceeded impacts of other disturbances in forests of the mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain over the last two decades. We used forest census data collected in undisturbed and insect-impacted stands combined with eddy covariance measurements made pre- and post-disturbance in oak-, mixed and pine-dominated stands to quantify how these infestations altered forest composition, structure and carbon dynamics in the Pinelands National Reserve o

Allergy to pine nuts in a bird fancier.

A patient is described with the bird-egg syndrome who experienced an anaphylactic reaction after eating some of her parrot's food (pine nuts: Pinus pinea). Specific IgE against this nut and another pine nut (P. cembra) was demonstrated by RAST. Cross-reactivity between these botanically related seeds was shown by RAST inhibition. Besides avian antigens, bird food antigens should be taken into consideration when symptoms of allergy occur on exposure to birds.

Biomass-Derived Activated Biochars to CO2 Adsorption.

The development of low-cost and sustainable adsorbents for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture has gained increasing attention as a strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, activated biochars produced from babassu, elephant grass, and Pinus elliottii were evaluated as CO2 adsorbents after different activation treatments. The biochars were produced by slow pyrolysis at 400 °C and subsequently modified using three activation routes: steam activation, chemical activation with KOH, and KOH activation followed by acid washing. The materials were characterized by proximate analysis, sp

Toxic hazard of leachates from furfurylated wood: comparison between two different aquatic organisms.

Environmental concern regarding the use of toxic preservatives such as chromated copper arsenate (CCA) has been put forward. In the European Union, United States, and Japan, CCA has been phased out for residential and water-contact applications. Ecotoxicological studies of wood treated with conventional preservatives were carried out in the late 1990s, and it was concluded that the main impact is to water and aquatic organisms. Today, alternatives to conventional preservation methods, marketed as "environmentally friendly" or "nontoxic," are emerging. Examples of such alternatives are modified

Higher plants as bioindicators of sulphur dioxide emissions in urban environments.

The evaluation of certain vascular plants that grow in the city of Madrid as biomonitors of SO(2) air pollution in urban environments has been carried out. Total concentration of sulphur in leaves of the chosen higher plants as well as other parameters in close relation to this contaminant (visible injury symptoms, chlorophyll a- and b-content and peroxidase activity) have been determined in order to study the spatial distribution and temporal changes in SO(2) deposition. Results obtained show that coniferous species such as Pinus pinea, were more sensitive to SO(2) atmospheric concentration t

Host plant specificity and multi-level infestation patterns of scale insects in semi-arid forests of North Africa.

Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) are important sap-feeding herbivores that influence plant physiology and contribute to forest ecosystem functioning. Despite their ecological importance, their host specificity and infestation dynamics remain insufficiently documented in Mediterranean semi-arid forests. This study investigated the distribution and ecological specialization of scale insects in Belezma National Park (Algeria), focusing on host tree species, plant communities, and infested plant parts. Significant variations (p = 0.006) in infestation rates were observed among host tree spec

Soil phosphorus mediates trade-offs between constitutive and induced defences in young pine trees.

Nutrient availability, namely soil phosphorus, modulates trade-offs between constitutive and induced defences in maritime pine, with high phosphorus weakening these trade-offs and shaping plant allocation to different defensive strategies. Abiotic factors modulate trade-offs between plant functions, but their influence on trade-offs between constitutive and induced defences remains poorly understood. We tested for such trade-offs in maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) and examined whether soil phosphorus availability affected these defensive correlations. We conducted a greenhouse experiment with s

Terpenoids are involved in the expression of systemic-induced resistance in Austrian pine.

Terpenoids are defense metabolites that are induced upon infection or wounding. However, their role in systemic-induced resistance (SIR) is not known. Here, we explored the role of terpenoids in this phenomenon at a very early stage in the interaction between Austrian pine and the tip blight and canker pathogen Diplodia pinea. We induced Austrian pine saplings by either wounding or inoculating the lower stems with D. pinea. The seedlings were then challenged after 12 h, 72 h, or 10 days with D. pinea on the stem 15 cm above the induction. Lesion lengths and terpenoids were quantified at both i

Co-pyrolysis with pine sawdust reduces the environmental risks of copper and zinc in dredged sediment and improves its adsorption capacity for cadmium.

Proper treatment of heavy metal-contaminated dredged sediment (DS) is crucial to avoid secondary pollution. Effective and sustainable technologies are desired for the treatment of Zn- and Cu-contaminated DS. Due to the advantages of low energy consumption and time saving, co-pyrolysis technology was innovatively applied to treat Cu- and Zn-polluted DS in this study, and the effects of the co-pyrolysis conditions on Cu and Zn stabilization efficiencies, potential stabilization mechanisms, and the possibility for resource utilization of co-pyrolysis product were also investigated. The results sh

Organic acids and aldehydes in throughfall and dew in a Japanese pine forest.

We analyzed low molecular weight organic acids and aldehydes in throughfall under pine forest, and organic acids in dew on chemically inert surfaces and pine needle surfaces at urban- and mountain-facing sites of pine forest in western Japan. Low molecular weight organic acids and aldehydes accounted for less than 5% of the dissolved organic carbon in throughfall at both sites. Formaldehyde at both sites and formate at the mountain-facing site were found at significantly lower concentrations in throughfall than in rainfall, which may be explained by the degradation and/or retention of these co

Climate-Driven Changes in Potential Suitability and Spatial Co-Occurrence Across the Pine Wilt Disease Complex.

Climate change may redistribute forest pests, pathogens, natural enemies, and host trees, yet these components are still often projected independently. We used ensemble species distribution models (SDMs) to map potential climatic suitability for Monochamus alternatus, Dastarcus helophoroides, Scleroderma guani, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, and a genus-level Pinus host layer, and then summarized niche overlap, range overlap, and multispecies co-suitability under SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5 for the 2050s and 2090s. A structural equation model (SEM) fitted to thresholded binary layers was ret

In-field pollen consumption by orchard predatory mites detected by metabarcoded molecular gut content analysis.

DNA metabarcoding has become a relatively common tool for studying consumption of plants by arthropod herbivores and identifying pollen collected by pollinating insects. However, studies using molecular gut content analysis to detect pollen-feeding in generalist predators are exceedingly rare. Pollen-feeding is known to be important to the nutritional ecology of many generalist predators and is particularly well studied in phytoseiid mites. In apples, generalist phytoseiids such as Typhlodromus caudiglans Schuster (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae) and the stigmaeid predator, Zetzellia mali (Ewing)

Induction of antiparasite activity by pine cone lignin-related substances.

Pretreatment with two distinct lignin-related antitumor substances extracted from pine cone of Pinus parviflora Sieb. et Zucc. protected infant mice from Hymenolepis nana (Cestoda) infection. Subcutaneous administration of these fractions (10 mg/kg) to 1 week old mice evoked strong protective immunity against oral infection by Hymenolepis nana eggs. Significant antiparasite effects were also induced in 4 week old mice by intraperitoneal or oral administration of these fractions. These fractions had more potent antiparasite activity than pine cone extracts with lower antitumor and antiviral act
