The focus of this work has been the study of simultaneous removal and recovery of Cr(VI) from ground waters with a high concentration of the metal (700 mg/l). The main objectives of water cleaning were the decrease of the Cr(VI) concentration down to the limits indicated by the Spanish regulations for discharge into channel waters (0.5 mg/l) and the recovery of the chromate compounds up to 15 g/l. The integration of two technologies: non-dispersive solvent extraction and anion exchange is presented as an environmental compatible solution. The final hybrid process allows the individual shortcom

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) are applied for water pollution control. This review examines the formation, activation mechanisms, and environmental applications of hyperaccumulator-derived biochar (HDB) for persulfate activation. Before pyrolysis, endogenous metals in hyperaccumulator plants undergo uptake, translocation, chelation, and subcellular compartmentalization, creating predispersion and coordination environments. During pyrolysis, these metals co-evolve with the biomass-derived carbon matrix, regulating metal dispersion, coordination, defects, carbon restruc

The assimilation potential (assimilative capacity) of the atmosphere can be represented in two ways: one as the ventilation coefficient and the other as the dispersion potential of emission loads discharged into the region. In the present study, the atmospheric assimilation potential of a typical urban area in Kochi city has been determined with respect to sulfur dioxide (SO(2)). The ventilation coefficient is directly proportional to the assimilation potential of the atmosphere and has been computed using meteorological parameters in all four seasons (winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon)

The ability of three plant species: Helianthus annuus, Nicotiana tabacum, and Vetiveria zizanioides for phytoaccumulation of Pb was studied. Plants were grown in hydroponic solution containing Pb(NO3)2 at concentration of 0.25 and 2.5 mM Pb in the presence or absence of chelating agents (EDTA or DTPA). Lead (Pb) transport and localization within the tissues of the plant species was determined using scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometers (SEM-EDS). The addition of chelators increased Pb uptake as compared to plants grown in solution containing Pb alone.

Quinoa protein isolate (QPI) is an emerging plant-based ingredient with high nutritional quality and significant potential for sustainable and clean-label food formulations. However, limited understanding of the relationships among its major protein fractions, physicochemical characteristics, and functionality restricts its broader utilization in food systems. This study investigated the effects of pH conditions (3, 5, 7, 9, and 11) on the particle size distribution, soluble-solid recovery, interfacial properties (surface hydrophobicity, emulsification, and foaming), and albumin-globulin prote

To evaluate the environmental impacts of tritiated wastewater discharge from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, we conducted a 10-year three-dimensional simulation of dissolved tracer dispersion in the Pacific Ocean and its marginal seas using the Regional Ocean Modeling System. The model domain was partitioned into 11 regions to quantify transport pathways, concentration evolution and inventory (accumulation) changes. Our results indicate that the dissolved tracer concentration is highest within the surrounding discharge location (SDL) and subsequently disperses to the deep western Pa

The European Union, producing over 2.5 billion tons of waste annually, has prompted the European Parliament to implement legal measures and encourage the shift towards a circular economy. Millions of tons of biowaste from olive plant leaves are generated annually, resulting in environmental and economic challenges. To address this, the biowaste of olive leaves was valorized, resulting in the extraction of valuable components, triterpenes and polyphenols, which hold potential pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic applications. Our research involved the formulation of a triterpene extract (TTP70, 70

The immense impacts of coal-fired power plant plumes on the atmospheric environment have caused great concern linked to climate and health issues. However, studies on the field observations of aerial plumes are relatively limited, mainly due to the lack of suitable plume observation tools and techniques. In this study, we use a multicopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sounding technique to study the influences of the aerial plumes of the world's fourth-largest coal-fired power plant on the atmospheric physical/chemical conditions and air quality. A set of species, including 106 volatile organ

Agricultural intensification threatens pollinators and associated ecosystem services through pesticide use and the loss and fragmentation of natural habitats. Sowing flower strips and preserving spontaneous flowers are commonly recommended practices to support pollinators within fields. However, their effectiveness remains variable across studies and pollinator morphogroups, and their influence on pollinator activity is poorly studied in several crops, particularly in blackcurrant. Here, we studied flowering plant communities (sown and spontaneous) and four pollinator morphogroups (Bombus, lar

Habitat fragmentation caused by human activities threatens plant genetic diversity, but the mechanisms shaping gene flow and spatial genetic structure in epiphytic orchids remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the genetic structure and gene flow patterns of the epiphytic orchid Rhynchostylis gigantea in a human-modified landscape on Hainan Island, China, using SNP markers. Based on 2005 high-quality SNPs generated via double-digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) from 275 individuals, we assessed genetic diversity, population differentiation, and fine-scale spat

Long-distance dispersal (LDD) followed by successful colonization influences many life-history traits and can lead to drastic changes in morphology. Although still controversial, a radical change in body size following colonization of islands ("island rule") has been observed in many animals, but also in plants. Here, we test this rule in a group of Euphorbia species endemic to four Mediterranean islands and compare them to their mainland ancestors. We challenge the previously proposed hypothesis of a vicariant origin of these endemics from a widespread common ancestor and suggest more recent

Citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, is an important citrus disease that causes significant economic losses worldwide. All commercial citrus varieties are susceptible to citrus canker. Currently, chemical control with copper based products is the main approach to control X. citri subsp. citri dispersal and plant colonization. However, extensive use of copper compounds can result in copper-resistant strains and cause adverse effects on the environment. Alternatives to chemical control involve the activation of citrus immunity to control the disease. Here, we investigated the

Human migrations across geographic boundaries can facilitate the introduction of new husbandry practices and dispersal of plants and animals, resulting in changes in biodiversity. As previously demonstrated, the 12th century BCE Philistine migration-to the southern Levantine littoral, involved the transportation of pigs from Europe, engendering long term genetic displacement of local Near Eastern haplotypes. Building on this, and combining biogeographical methods of Floral List comparisons with archaeological data, we have elucidated the Philistine impact on Southern Levantine floral ecosystem

Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative nosocomial pathogen that is notorious for its rapid development of antibiotic resistance. However, its ecology and evolution outside hospital settings remain poorly defined. Here, we demonstrate that the natural lifestyle of A. baumannii includes soil-dwelling and airborne dissemination, which helps explaining its adaptability and tolerance to desiccation, radiation and antibiotics, and thus its predisposition to establish within hospitals. Starting from white stork nestlings previously discovered as a reservoir, we studied food chains and associated

The white peach scale, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni-Tozzetti) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), is a highly polyphagous insect pest of global phytosanitary relevance affecting fruit trees, perennial crops, and ornamental plants in temperate and subtropical regions. Its invasive success is largely driven by high thermal tolerance, a wide host range, and strong survival capacity under postharvest handling and cold-chain storage, which greatly enhances its potential for long-distance dispersal through international trade of fresh fruit and plant material. A systematic review and meta-synthesis of

High-severity fires fundamentally alter community assembly trajectories, a process particularly critical in fragile karst ecosystems. Elucidating the mechanisms driving early post-fire assembly is vital for identifying constraints on ecological recovery. Here, we investigated plant community assembly in burned karst sites in central Guizhou Province, China, surveying vegetation 0.5-5 years following a high-severity forest fire. By integrating null models, Mantel tests, and random forest analyses, we quantified shifts in community characteristics and the drivers governing assembly processes. Th

Mucormycosis usually presents as a progressive infection with significant angio-invasion. Mucormycosis due to Mucor irregularis (formerly Rhizomucor variabilis var. variabilis), however, is exceptional in causing chronic cutaneous infection in immunocompetent humans, ultimately leading to severe morbidity if left untreated. More than 90 % of the cases known to date were reported from Asia, mainly from China. The nearest neighbour of M. irregularis is the saprobic species M. hiemalis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the taxonomic position, epidemiology, and intra- and inter-species divers

PREMISE: Volatile emissions from flowers and fruits play a key role in signalling to animals responsible for pollination and seed dispersal. Here, we investigated the pollination biology and chemical ecology of reproduction in Apodolirion buchananii, an African amaryllid that flowers in a leafless state soon after grassland vegetation is burnt in the dry late-winter season.
METHODS: Pollinators were identified through field collection and pollen loads were quantified. Floral traits including spectral reflectance and scent chemistry were documented. Bioassays using cup traps were used to test
