Datura contamination of hay as the suspected cause of an extensive outbreak of impaction colic in horses.

Datura poisoning of horses is extensively reviewed. An outbreak of intractable impaction colic affecting 18 of 83 horses was stopped by withdrawing dried tef hay contaminated with young Datura plants. The dried, botanically identified Datura stramonium and D. ferox contained respectively 0.15% mass/mass (m/m) hyoscyamine as well as 0.16% m/m hyoscine (scopolamine) and only hyoscine at a concentration of 0.11% m/m. Immature, unidentifiable plants resembling D. stramonium, contained 0.14% m/m and 0.12% m/m of the 2 respective tropane alkaloids. The outbreak was characterised by protracted and re

Some phytotoxins causing reproductive alterations in ruminants.

The presence of phytotoxins in plants constitutes a health risk for herbivores, particularly on ruminants who accidently consume them. Among the adverse effects produced by these are reproductive alterations, represented by abortion, infertility, and morphological alterations in neonates, which are frequently attributed to other causes. While in some cases the plants that contain such metabolites are known, other times they are not, leading to alterations that are difficult to treat considering that their toxicodynamics are unknown. The objective of this documentary research is to provide info

Congenital skeletal malformations and cleft palate induced in goats by ingestion of Lupinus, Conium and Nicotiana species.

Three piperidine alkaloid containing plants, Conium maculatum (poison-hemlock), Nicotiana glauca (tree tobacco) and Lupinus formosus (lunara lupine), induced multiple congenital contractures (MCC) and palatoschisis in goat kids when their dams were gavaged with the plant during gestation days 30-60. The skeletal abnormalities included fixed extension or flexure of the carpal, tarsal, and fetlock joints, scoliosis, lordosis, torticollis and rib cage abnormalities. Clinical signs of toxicity included those reported in sheep, cattle and pigs--ataxia, incoordination, muscular weakness, prostration

Histological and ultrastructural lesions of acute tubular necrosis in beef cattle with Amaranthus hybridus-induced nephrotoxicity.

An outbreak of poisoning associated with glyphosate-resistant Amaranthus hybridus affected three cows and twenty-five calves in Tacuarembó, Uruguay. The disease occurred from summer to autumn, coinciding with plant fruiting. Affected calves showed nasal discharge, preputial edema, weakness, recumbency, and gross lesions compatible with renal failure. Histological and ultrastructural analyses demonstrated acute tubular necrosis in proximal convoluted tubules and the descending limb of loops of Henle, supporting a direct toxic effect of Amaranthus-derived compounds in affected calves.

Acute poisoning in old and very old patients: a longitudinal retrospective study of 5883 patients in a toxicological intensive care unit.

Although morbidity and mortality of acute poisoning are increased in elderly compared to younger patients, little has been published on this topics in the last years (Medline search). To investigate the influence of age on the clinical course of acute poisoning with different toxic agents, a longitudinal retrospective study at the Toxicological Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine (Klinikum Nürnberg, Germany) was performed.A total of 5883 patients treated at our toxicological ICU were enrolled into the study, including all patients of the years 1982, 1992, and 1

A survey of animal poisonings in New Zealand veterinary practices: perceptions of incidence and frequency of poisoning cases.

AIMS: To survey New Zealand veterinary practices on the incidence and frequency of animal poisonings encountered over a 1-year period. METHODS: A national questionnaire-based cross-sectional online survey was made available to all members of the New Zealand Veterinary Association, active as of 2010, via an email supplying a link to the questionnaire. Veterinary practices listed by the Veterinary Council of New Zealand were also contacted via email or phone. Respondents entered their information on the online survey site or provided a hard copy of their responses, which were then entered by th

A simple and sensitive GC/MS method for the determination of atropine during therapy of anticholinesterase poisoning in serum samples.

Atropine is used in the daily clinical practice for the treatment of poisonings caused by anticholinesterase pesticides, due to its sympathomimetic action. The investigation of the cause of the adverse effects that appear during atropine administration showed the necessity for the development and validation of a simple, rapid, sensitive, and specific method for the determination of atropine levels in serum samples. The developed method includes liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate: dichloromethane (3:1, v/v) and derivatization using N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)-trifluoracetamide (BSTFA) with

Plant polyphenols and human skin: friends or foes.

In response to abiotic and biotic stressors, numerous polyphenols (PPs) are synthesized from phenylalanine by higher plants, amid many other plants that are poisonous for insects, birds, animals, and humans. PPs are also widely recognized by botanical dermatology as major plant constituents inducing allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, phytodermatoses, and photophytodermatoses. Notwithstanding these clinical observations, thousands of cosmetic/dermatological preparations based on PP-containing plant extracts or pure PPs emerge yearly with the claims of photoprotection, chemoprevention of sk

Potent contact allergen in the rubber plant guayule (Parthenium argentatum).

Chemical and dermatotoxicological investigations of the natural and processed resin of the Mexican rubber plant, guayule (Parthenium argentatum), has established the presence of a sesquiterpene cinnamic acid ester (guayulin A) that is a potent elicitor of allergic contact dermatitis in experimental animals. The guayule contact allergen is comparable to the poison ivy skin allergens as an elicitor of dermatitis in sensitized guinea pigs.

Uninhibited biosynthesis and release of phytosiderophores in the presence of heavy metal (HM) favors HM remediation.

Production of phytosiderophore (PS) has been causally related to iron-deficiency tolerance in cereals. However, PS can also chelate heavy metal and thus may represent a viable phytoextraction strategy on contaminated soils. Two separate experiments were conducted to assess the affect of heavy metal on phytosiderophore biosynthesis and their release in the rhizosphere of wheat. Root exudates were collected from 10-day-old wheat seedlings raised on Fe-deficient nutrient solution in the presence of 2.5, 5.0, and 10 mM concentration of different heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Ni) for 3-day period, for

Clinical toxicoses of domestic rabbits.

Toxicoses are an uncommon presentation to rabbit practitioners; however, veterinarians who accept rabbits as patients should be familiar with the basic concepts of toxicosis management and the specific syndromes associated with clinical toxicoses. The objective of this article is to present clinically relevant information for veterinarians presented with rabbits exhibiting characteristic signs of toxicosis. In addition, specific mention is made to the most common clinical toxicoses, including lead, chemicals, rodenticides, aflatoxins, and poisonous plants.

Suspected tremetol poisoning in horses.

Of 10 horses in a heavily overgrazed pasture, 4 died within 1 week. Clinical signs included muscle tremors, ataxia, reluctance to walk, heavy sweating, and myoglobinuria. Serum creatine kinase, aspartate transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase activities were high. Histopathologic findings were nonspecific. On the basis of clinical signs, clinicopathologic findings, nonspecific histopathologic findings, the condition of the pasture, the identification of numerous white snakeroot plants from which trematone was extracted, and evidence that these plants had been heavily browsed, it was believed t

Skeletal findings in human neutrolethyrism. Is there a human osteolathyrism?

In a review of the roentgenological files of 22 patients suffering from spastic paraplegia due to neurolathyrism, 3 patients were found to present abnormal skeletal findings. 2 patients showed absence of union of the secondary ossification centres of the iliac crests, the ischial tuberosities and the vertebral bodies. Their age at the time of ingestion of poisonous Lathyrus sativus plants was 19 and 20 years. The 3rd patient had bowing and thickening of his right femoral shaft. He was 22 years old at the time of poisoning. These findings which are similar to those found in experimental osteola

New aspects in the treatment of water hemlock poisoning.

A man inadvertently ate a whole root of the highly poisonous water hemlock (Cicuta virosa L.) plant. The chief symptoms were convulsions, unconsciousness, reddish tinted cyanosis, dilated pupils and marked metabolic acidosis. The patient survived due to treatment with haemodialysis, haemoperfusion, forced diuresis and artificial ventilation. The cicutoxin molecule size was calculated and it was found to be dialysable.

[Health effects of pyrethrins and pyrethroids].

Pyrethrins, natural extracts of Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium and Chrysanthemum cocineum flowers, and pyrethroids, synthetic analogues and derivatives of pyrethrins, are powerful insecticides. They are widely used in households and insect control in pets or livestock, in textiles such as carpets, wallpapers, furniture and clothes, as well as in agriculture, forestry and public health services. This article brings a list of pyrethrin and pyrethroid insecticides registered for use in plant protection in Croatia. Pyrethrins and pyrethroids can enter the organism by ingestion (accidental or suici

[Pentachlorophenol poisoning. Report of 4 cases and review of the literature].

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) was, and still is, one of the most frequently used fungicides and pesticides. The use of PCP has been more restricted during the last few years. PCP's most important industrial application is as a wood preservative. The pentachlorophenol can be absorbed into the body by all the routes of occupational exposure. Some epidemiological observations suggest that exposure to PCP solutions may result in an increased risk for certain diseases in humans, e.g., immunodeficiency, blood disorders, malignancies, congenital anomalies. Chronic poisoning is difficult to detect since sym

Fructose-1, 6-diphosphate (FDP) as a novel antidote for yellow oleander-induced cardiac toxicity: a randomized controlled double blind study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac toxicity due to ingestion of oleander plant seeds in Sri Lanka and some other South Asian countries is very common. At present symptomatic oleander seed poisoning carries a mortality of 10% in Sri Lanka and treatment of yellow oleander poisoning is limited to gastric decontamination and atropine administration. The only proven effective antidote is digoxin antibodies but these are not available for routine use because of the high cost. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a new and inexpensive antidote for patients with life threatening ar

Diagnoses of Pathological States Based on Acetylcholinesterase and Butyrylcholinesterase.

Two cholinesterases exist: Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). While AChE plays a crucial role in neurotransmissions, BChE has no specific function apart from the detoxification of some drugs and secondary metabolites from plants. Thus, both AChE and BChE can serve as biochemical markers of various pathologies. Poisoning by nerve agents like sarin, soman, tabun, VX, novichok and overdosing by drugs used in some neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer´s disease and myasthenia gravis, as well as poisoning by organophosphorus pesticides are relevant to this issue. But

A poisonous surprise under the coat of the African crested rat.

Plant toxins are sequestered by many animals and the toxicity is frequently advertised by aposematic displays to deter potential predators. Such 'unpalatability by appropriation' is common in many invertebrate groups and also found in a few vertebrate groups. However, potentially lethal toxicity by acquisition has so far never been reported for a placental mammal. Here, we describe complex morphological structures and behaviours whereby the African crested rat, Lophiomys imhausi, acquires, dispenses and advertises deterrent toxin. Roots and bark of Acokanthera schimperi (Apocynaceae) trees are
