Red and white LED light improve vegetative propagation of Dysophylla yatabeana in closed-type smart farm.

Efficient artificial lighting is essential for optimizing plant growth and propagation in closed-type smart farms. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of light-emitting diode (LED) combinations using red (R), blue (B), and white (W) light on physiological responses and rhizome-based vegetative propagation in Dysophylla yatabeana, a poorly seed-propagable aquatic species. Plants were cultivated under five different spectral treatments and a natural light control. Key physiological indicators-including net photosynthetic rate (Pn), substomatal CO2 partial pressure (Ci), transpiration rate (

Comparison of Salt Stress Tolerance among Two Leaf and Six Grain Cultivars of Amaranthus cruentus L.

Amaranths (Amaranthus L.) are multi-use crop species renowned for their nutritional quality and their tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Since the soil salinity of croplands is a growing problem worldwide, we tested the salinity tolerance of six grain and two leaf cultivars of Amaranthus cruentus L. The plants were grown for 53 days under hydroponic conditions at 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl. We investigated the growth rate, photosynthetic activity, mineral content, pigments and biochemical compounds involved in oxidative stress. Although 100 mM NaCl always decreased biomass production, we hig

Gamma radiation-induced synthesis of a novel chitosan/silver/Mn-Mg ferrite nanocomposite and its impact on cadmium accumulation and translocation in brassica plant growth.

Herein, a novel chitosan/silver/Mn0.5Mg0.5Fe2O4 (Cs/Ag/MnMgFe2O4) nanocomposite was synthesized with gamma irradiation assistant. The prepared Cs/Ag/MnMgFe2O4 nanocomposite was characterized via EDX, XRD, SEM, UV-vis spectroscopy. To evaluate the effects of soak low and high-dose nanocomposite on physiological parameters, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant and non-antioxidant enzymes of cabbage under Cd stress, a factorial experiment was conducted based on CRD with five replications. The Cd stress decreased the morphological characteristics and photosynthetic pigments while increasing cabbag

Local and systemic effects of two herbivores with different feeding mechanisms on primary metabolism of cotton leaves.

Caterpillars and spider mites are herbivores with different feeding mechanisms. Spider mites feed on the cell content via stylets, while caterpillars, as chewing herbivores, remove larger amounts of photosynthetically active tissue. We investigated local and systemic effects of short-term caterpillar and spider mite herbivory on cotton in terms of primary metabolism and growth processes. After short-term caterpillar feeding, leaf growth and water content were decreased in damaged leaves. The glutamate/glutamine ratio increased and other free amino acids were also affected. In contrast, mild sp

Overexpression of a protein disulfide isomerase-like protein from Methanothermobacter thermoautotrophicum enhances mercury tolerance in transgenic rice.

MTH1745, from thermophilic archaea Methanothermobacter thermoautotrophicum, is a protein disulfide isomerase-like protein (PDIL) with a chaperone function and disulfide isomerase activity. Mercuric cations have a high affinity for sulfhydryl groups and consequently inhibit plant growth. Disulfide compounds (e.g., copper-zinc superoxide dismutase, Cu/Zn SOD) and sulfhydryl compounds (e.g., glutathione, phytochelatins, and metallothioneins) play important roles in mercury (Hg) response. To study the relationship between Hg detoxification and PDILs, we overexpressed MTH1745 in Oryza sativa L. cv.

How is ozone pollution reducing our food supply?

Ground-level ozone pollution is already decreasing global crop yields (from ∼2.2-5.5% for maize to 3.9-15% and 8.5-14% for wheat and soybean, respectively), to differing extents depending on genotype and environmental conditions, and this problem is predicted to escalate given climate change and increasing ozone precursor emissions in many areas. Here a summary is provided of how ozone pollution affects yield in a variety of crops, thus impacting global food security. Ozone causes visible injury symptoms to foliage; it induces early senescence and abscission of leaves; it can reduce stomatal a

Cross-ribbon conformation defines peptide recognition in SCREW/CTNIP-NUT/HSL3 signalling.

Plants balance gas exchange with pathogen defense through dynamic stomatal regulation. Stomata close temporarily during pathogen attack to limit invasion, then reopen to restore photosynthesis and transpiration while lowering apoplast water saturation to inhibit pathogen proliferation. The secreted peptides, SCREW/CTNIP promote stomatal reopening through the receptor NUT/HSL3 and co-receptor BAK1/SERK3, thereby counteracting ABA and MAMP-triggered stomatal closure. Here we present the cryo-EM structures of AtNUTECD and the AtNUTECD-SCREW2/CTNIP4-AtBAK1ECD complex, uncovering a distinctive pept

Interplay between hydrogen sulfide and other signaling molecules in the regulation of guard cell signaling and abiotic/biotic stress response.

Stomatal aperture controls the balance between transpirational water loss and photosynthetic carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake. Stomata are surrounded by pairs of guard cells that sense and transduce environmental or stress signals to induce diverse endogenous responses for adaptation to environmental changes. In a recent decade, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been recognized as a signaling molecule that regulates stomatal movement. In this review, we summarize recent progress in research on the regulatory role of H2S in stomatal movement, including the dynamic regulation of phytohormones, ion homeostas

CO2-sensitive K+ channel traffic affects stomata and whole-plant water use.

Stomata are pores at the leaf surface that facilitate CO2 entry for photosynthesis while controlling transpirational water loss. Stomatal movements are governed by reversible changes in turgor and cell volume, driven by the transport of osmotic solute across the membrane of guard cells surrounding the pore. Membrane transport depends on the activities of transporters and ion channels present at the membrane and also on their abundance, determined by vesicle traffic. Although much is known about how pumps and ion channels in the membrane are regulated, this is not the case for vesicle trafficki

Machine learning-enabled non-targeted metabolomics reveals nutritional and metabolic responses of Brachypodium distachyon to drought and elevated CO2.

Rising atmospheric CO2 and intensified drought are reshaping nutrient dynamics in C3 plants, with implications for ecosystem function and food security. To investigate how these stressors jointly affect nutrient homeostasis, we examined Brachypodium distachyon, a model for C3 cereal grasses, grown under ambient (400 ppm) or elevated (800 ppm) CO2, factorially combined with well-watered or drought treatments. Integrative analyses of physiology, ionomics, transcriptomics, and non-targeted metabolomics revealed that plant elemental composition and metabolomic responses to elevated CO2 strongly de

A Study on the Behavior of Cadmium in the Soil Solution-Plant System by the Lysimeter Method Using the 109Cd Radioactive Tracer.

In soils, cadmium (Cd) and its compounds, originating from industrial activities, differ both in mobility as well as in their ability to permeate the soil solution from naturally occurring cadmium compounds (native Cd). Therefore, the determination of the parameters of cadmium mobility in soils and its accumulation by plants in the soil-soil solution-plant system is very important from both scientific and practical viewpoints. 109Cd was used as a radioactive tracer to study the processes of the transition of Cd into the aqueous phase and its uptake by plants over the course of a vegetative lys

Up-regulation of nitrogen metabolism and chlorophyll biosynthesis by hydrogen sulfide improved photosystem photochemistry and gas exchange in chromium-contaminated bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants.

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is considered as plant growth promoter under heavy metal stress, though its specific effects on photosynthesis are rarely explored. This study investigates the protective effects of exogenous H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) on chlorophyll metabolism and photosystem II (PSII) function in 24-day-old bean plants exposed to 10 μM chromium (Cr) stress. Sodium hydrosulfide (100 μM) reduced Cr accumulation in both roots and leaves, leading to restored plant growth. Concomitantly, H₂S mitigated Cr-induced oxidative damages by decreasing reactive oxygen species levels and fu

A CRY1-HY5-MYB signaling cascade fine-tunes guard cell reactive oxygen species levels and triggers stomatal opening.

Stomatal opening facilitates CO2 uptake and causes water loss via transpiration. Compared with the considerable progress made toward understanding phototropin-mediated blue light (BL) signaling in guard cells, the significance of cryptochromes (CRYs) in stomatal opening and their downstream elements remain largely unknown. Here, we show that 3 homologous MYB transcription factor genes, namely MYB11, MYB12, and MYB111, are rapidly transactivated in guard cells during the dark-to-light transition in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Genetic characterization of myb mutants demonstrates that the

Impact of foliar application of syringic acid on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) under heavy metal stress-insights into nutrient uptake, redox homeostasis, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defense.

Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals [such as lead (Pb)] is becoming a serious global problem due to the rapid development of the social economy. However, accumulation of Pb in plant parts is very toxic for plant growth and decreases crop yield and productivity. In the present study, we have investigated the different concentrations of Pb in the soil i.e., [0 (no Pb), 50, and 100 mg kg-1] to study plant growth and biomass, photosynthetic pigments and gas exchange characteristics, oxidative stress indicators and the response of various antioxidants (enzymatic and non-enzymatic), nutrition

Hydrogen sulfide: An emerging signaling molecule regulating drought stress response in plants.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is a small, reactive signaling molecule that is produced within chloroplasts of plant cells as an intermediate in the assimilatory sulfate reduction pathway by the enzyme sulfite reductase. In addition, H2 S is also produced in cytosol and mitochondria by desulfhydration of l-cysteine catalyzed by l-cysteine desulfhydrase (DES1) in the cytosol and from β-cyanoalanine in mitochondria, in a reaction catalyzed by β-cyano-Ala synthase C1 (CAS-C1). H2 S exerts its numerous biological functions by post-translational modification involving oxidation of cysteine residues (RSH)

Exploring the use of Leucobacter komagatae as an eco-friendly bio-inoculant to enhance sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) growth and yield under drought conditions.

Drought occurrence owing to climate change is a major constraint to attain sustainable agriculture, severely limiting crop growth and productivity. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids), a key crop in tropical and subtropical regions, is particularly susceptible to drought stress because of its extended growth duration and high-water requirements. In this study, previously identified four plant growth promoting Leucobacter komagatae (ASBD2, ASBD15, ASBD19 and ASBD30) were evaluated under greenhouse conditions (pot culture study) over two consecutive years (2023-24 and 2024-25). Soil potassium-magnesium imbalance induces magnesium-deficiency chlorosis in macadamia leaves: impacts on microstructure, photosynthesis, yield, quality, and fatty acid profile.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency is a common symptom of chlorosis in macadamia plantations in southern China, particularly in Yunnan, which restricts their sustainable production and processing quality. This study clarified its negative effects on leaf physiology and fruit quality. RESULTS: Magnesium-deficient plants exhibited interveinal chlorosis in lower leaves, disordered mesophyll cells, weakened chlorophyll autofluorescence, and 45.52-70.08% lower leaf magnesium content (P < 0.05), hindering chlorophyll biosynthesis. Chloroplasts were fewer in number, and ultrastructurally exhibited red

Impact of climate change on the irrigation water demand of rainfed crops in the Southern and Steppe regions of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Proper management of natural resources is essential to improve agricultural productivity and reduce potential losses. The PROJETA platform provides global climate models regionalized by the ETA model, enabling more accurate climate projections for specific regions. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of climate change on irrigation water demand using three global climate models (CANESM2, HADGEM2-ES, and MIROC5) regionalized by the ETA model for the baseline period (1961-2005) and two future scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). The scenarios were subdivided into three future periods and anal

Active phytoextraction of toluene shifts the microbiome and enhances degradation capacity in hybrid poplar.

Hybrid poplars are widely recognized for their effectiveness in remediating subsurface aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants, including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX). While BTEX compounds are frequently found in the transpiration streams of poplars at contaminated sites, the microbial dynamics within these trees, particularly in response to hydrocarbon exposure, remain underexplored. This study utilized high-throughput amplicon sequencing to investigate the trunk microbiome in hybrid poplars at a field-scale toluene phytoremediation site. Across the plant growth season
