Insect pollination services amount to USD 235-577 billion. Seventy five percent of agricultural production for human consumption depends on pollination, mainly by bees. A decline in pollinators, including Meliponini tribe bees, will impact the economy, food security, human health, and ecosystem stability, especially in tropical forests where stingless bees are the main pollinators. The objective of this survey was to understand the relationship between good management practices and nest losses in meliponiculture, encompassing biosecurity and conservation criteria. A 36-question survey was orga

The alfalfa leafcutting bee (LCB) (Megachile rotundata Fabricius) is a solitary, managed pollinator widely used in North American agriculture to produce alfalfa and hybrid canola seed. Despite its economic importance, and known sensitivity to certain pesticides, little is known about the specific pesticide residues LCBs encounter during pollination, and toxicity data for this species remains limited. To determine what residues LCBs are commonly exposed to, we screened larval LCB provisions from nine alfalfa sites during pollination in southern Alberta for 69 pesticide residues. Eight residues

Mirror-image flowers (enantiostyly) involve a form of sexual asymmetry in which a flower's style is deflected either to the left or right side, with a pollinating anther orientated in the opposite direction. This curious floral polymorphism, which was known but not studied by Charles Darwin, occurs in at least 11 unrelated angiosperm families and represents a striking example of adaptive convergence in form and function associated with cross-pollination by insects. In several lineages, dimorphic enantiostyly (one stylar orientation per plant, both forms occurring within populations) has evolve

Bumble bees (Bombus spp., Hymenoptera, Apidae) play a crucial role in pollinating greenhouse tomato crops. However, tomato production is constantly threatened by different invasive pests that often lead to the increased use of pesticides, with negative consequences for pollinators. The cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis has recently been reported in Mediterranean tomatoes and its chemical control raises concerns also regarding bumble bees. In the laboratory, we evaluated the acute toxicity and sublethal effects in B. terrestris workers exposed to the diet contaminated with four insecticide

This study examines the reproductive biology of five widely cultivated apple cultivars in Norway ('Discovery', 'Rubinstep', 'Red Aroma', 'Elstar', and 'Asfari'), when crossed with the main pollenizers ('Summerred', 'Discovery', 'Katja', 'Rubinstep', 'Red Aroma', 'Fryd', and 'Eden', and two crab apples 'Professor Sprenger' and 'Dolgo'), as well as under self-pollination and open pollination. The experiment was conducted over two seasons (2022-2023) in Hardanger, a region in Western Norway. Flowering time and overlap, in vitro pollen germination, pollen tube growth within the styles and ovary, e

Electrostatic treatment holds promise for enhancing pollen and seed viability, as well as improving crop quality. However, there are limited reports regarding the effects of electrostatically treated pollen on pollination and fruit quality in plants. In this study, an electrostatic pollination platform was established, treated pollen was used to pollinate the kiwifruit cultivar (Actinidia deliciosa cv. 'Xuxiang'), and in vitro germination experiments were conducted. In field experiment, style samples were collected every 0.5 hours over a continuous period of 20 hours, and pollen tube behavior

Growing evidence for global pollinator decline is causing concern for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services maintenance. Neonicotinoid pesticides have been identified or suspected as a key factor responsible for this decline. We assessed the global exposure of pollinators to neonicotinoids by analyzing 198 honey samples from across the world. We found at least one of five tested compounds (acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam) in 75% of all samples, 45% of samples contained two or more of these compounds, and 10% contained four or five. Our results

BACKGROUND: Many plants, including those commonly found in the Fagaceae family, produce more flowers and ovules than mature fruits and seeds. In Castanea henryi, an ovary contains 16-24 ovules, but only one develops into a seed. The other ovules abort or otherwise fail to fully develop, but the reason for this is unknown. Such a strict reproductive screening mechanism is rare in plants.
METHODS: In this study, controlled pollination scheme were adopted, and conventional paraffin embedding and semi-thin sectioning techniques, followed by microscopy, were used for cytological studies of ovule d

Hybrid crop production is more reliant on pollinators compared to open-pollinated crops because they require cross-pollination between a male-fertile and a male-sterile line. Little is known about how stigma receipt of pollen from male-sterile genotypes affects reproduction in hybrids. Non-viable and non-compatible pollen cannot fertilise plant ovules, but may still interfere with pollination success. Here we used seedless watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) as a model hybrid plant, to evaluate the morphology, physiology, and movement of pollen from inter-planted genotypes

Nectar and pollen contain diverse phytochemicals that can reduce disease in pollinators. However, prior studies showed variable effects of nectar chemicals on infection, which could reflect variable phytochemical resistance among parasite strains. Inter-strain variation in resistance could influence evolutionary interactions between plants, pollinators, and pollinator disease, but testing direct effects of phytochemicals on parasites requires elimination of variation between bees. Using cell cultures of the bumble bee parasite Crithidia bombi, we determined (1) growth-inhibiting effects of nin

The enormous species richness of flowering plants is at least partly due to floral diversification driven by interactions between plants and their animal pollinators [1, 2]. Specific pollinator attraction relies on visual and olfactory floral cues [3-5]; floral scent can not only attract pollinators but also attract or repel herbivorous insects [6-8]. However, despite its central role for plant-animal interactions, the genetic control of floral scent production and its evolutionary modification remain incompletely understood [9-13]. Benzenoids are an important class of floral scent compounds t

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic skin sensitization (AS) has been shown to be a risk factor for respiratory allergic disease. CCR4, CXCR1 and CD62L have all been assigned a role in the immunopathogenesis of allergy. Memory T-cell expression of CCR4, CXCR1 and CD62L has not hitherto been investigated in subjects with AS.
METHODS: We investigated seasonal CD4 memory T-cell expression of the chemokine receptors CCR4, CXCR1 as well as L-selectin (CD62L) in fresh cultures derived from symptomatic atopics (SAs), subjects with AS and healthy controls (HCs). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from all three

Intensive arable farming threatens wild bees by reducing floral and nesting resources, increasing agrochemical exposure, and amplifying climatic stress. Ecological restoration using native wildflower mixtures is a promising intervention to recover pollinator diversity and the ecosystem service of pollination. However, restoration outcomes remain context dependent, and it is still poorly understood how restoration can be sustainably integrated into agricultural landscapes over time. We used a replicated, landscape-scale field experiment in East-Central Europe (Hungary) to test how spatial confi

Urbanization poses a major threat to biodiversity and food security, as expanding cities, especially in the Global South, increasingly compete with natural and agricultural lands. However, the impact of urban expansion on agricultural biodiversity in tropical regions is overlooked. Here we assess how urbanization affects the functional response of farmland bees, the most important pollinators for crop production. We sampled bees across three seasons in 36 conventional vegetable-producing farms spread along an urbanization gradient in Bengaluru, an Indian megacity. We investigated how landscape

Orthotospovirus tomatomaculae (Tomato spotted wilt virus, TSWV) is an economically important plant pathogen reported to be transmissible by seeds. However, the pathways by which the virus enters the seed remain poorly understood. Here, we characterized the distribution and vertical transmission pathways of TSWV within reproductive organs of Capsicum annuum. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed systemic distribution of TSWV throughout floral tissues, with virions detected in anthers, pollen grains, ovaries, ovules, and styles. Immunofluorescence histochemistry further revealed accum

The risks imposed by novel insecticides, mainly bioinsecticides, are largely unknown despite their increased use and their perceived environmental safety, which is based on their natural origin. Furthermore, unlike honeybees, native pollinator species have received little attention. In the present study, the lethal and sublethal effects of the neonicotinoid imidacloprid and the bioinsecticide spinosad were assessed in the stingless bee species Meliponaquadrifasciata, an important native pollinator in the Neotropical region. The adult stingless bee workers exhibited high oral insecticide suscep

Global change presents a threat to pollinators, with declining populations trends jeopardising the delivery of pollination services. In agroecosystems, the reduction of floral resources and exposure to pesticides have been identified as stressors of bee pollinators. The present study investigated the interaction between nutritional and agrochemical stresses on sublethal endpoints in the bumblebee Bombus terrestris. We used two pollen diets differing in quality and quantity and exposed micro-colonies to various concentrations of two insecticides (sulfoxaflor and cyantraniliprole), a fungicide (

In the Southern High Plains of the United States, beef cattle feed yards and row crop agriculture are predominant sources of agrochemical usage. Beef cattle feed yards use large quantities of veterinary pharmaceuticals to promote cattle growth and health, along with insecticides to control insect pests, whereas row crop-based agriculture relies on herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides to increase yields. Previous studies have documented the occurrence of agrochemicals beyond feed yard and row crop agriculture boundaries in uncultivated, marginal areas, raising concern that migratory pollina

Pollinator-plant interactions represent a core mutualism that underpins biodiversity in terrestrial ecosystems, and the loss of flowering plants is a major driver of pollinator declines. Bee attraction to flowers is mediated by both quantity of resources (the number of available flowers for exploration) and quality of resources (pollen nutritional value), but whether and how bees prioritize these factors is not well understood. Here, we leveraged a unique plant system to investigate the floral factors influencing bee foraging decisions. Recombinant inbred plant lines were generated by crossing

Honey bee pollination services are of tremendous agricultural and economic importance. Despite this, honey bees and other pollinators face ongoing perils, including population declines due to a variety of environmental stressors. Fungicides may be particularly insidious stressors for pollinators due to their environmental ubiquity and widespread approval for application during crop bloom. The mechanisms by which fungicides affect honey bees are poorly understood and any seasonal variations in their impact are unknown. Here we assess the effects on honey bee colonies of four-week exposure (the
