The polystyrene beads sign: a simple MRI marker for the preoperative diagnosis of papillary hypothalamic craniopharyngiomas.

OBJECTIVE: Craniopharyngiomas are classified as adamantinomatous or papillary subtypes. Papillary craniopharyngiomas harbor BRAF V600E mutations and demonstrate high response rates to BRAF/MEK inhibition. Craniopharyngiomas involving the hypothalamus are common and carry high surgical morbidity, including endocrine, metabolic, and neurocognitive complications. Therefore, reliable preoperative identification of papillary hypothalamic tumors could support consideration of biopsy followed by targeted therapy, potentially avoiding high-risk surgery. DESIGN: This study is a single-center retrospec

Combined toxicity of co-exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics and arsenic on the gut-liver axis in mice.

Plastic and heavy-metal contamination have become global environmental concerns, with evidence showing that humans and animals are exposed to multiple pollutants simultaneously. Polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and arsenic (As) are noteworthy due to their distribution, persistence, and potential to co-occur in food chains and ecosystems. However, their combined toxicity and underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we explored the toxicological effects of co-exposure to As and PSNPs at concentrations representative of highly contaminated environments on the intestinal and hepatic sys

Juvenile and Pubertal Exposure to Polystyrene Nanoplastics Impairs Epididymal Structure and Sperm Quality in Mice.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging environmental contaminants capable of crossing biological barriers, accumulating in tissues, and disrupting physiological pathways. The male reproductive system is particularly vulnerable during the postnatal period, a developmental window characterized by intense testicular differentiation and epididymal maturation. This study investigated whether exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NP) during the juvenile and pubertal periods alters epididymal morphophysiology and sperm quality in C57BL/6 male mice. Animals (postnatal day, PND 22) received PS-NP orally at

Polystyrene Microplastics Trigger Liver Damage Through Impaired Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Mitochondrial Dynamics.

Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) are emerging environmental contaminants with increasing evidence of systemic toxicity; however, the mechanisms underlying their hepatic effects remain incompletely understood. The present study investigated the hepatotoxic effects of PS-MPs, focusing on hepatic bioaccumulation, mitochondrial homeostasis, inflammation, apoptosis, and liver functional impairment. Experimental animals were exposed to increasing concentrations of PS-MPs, after which liver tissues were subjected to GC-MS, biochemical, histopathological, and molecular analyses. GC-MS confirmed hepa

Polystyrene nanoplastics induce transient microglial activation via endolysosomal retention in the mouse cortex.

Environmental degradation and accumulation of plastics results in micro- and nanoplastics that are small enough to cross biological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier. Microglia, resident immune cells of the brain, are critical regulators of neuroimmune homeostasis and represent a cellular target of nanoplastic exposure. In this study, we assessed the neurotoxic effects of two sizes of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs; 100 nm and 500 nm) using integrated in vivo and in vitro exposure and washout paradigms. In vivo exposure in mice (60 days; 1.5 mg/day) showed the presence of both PS-N

Impact of polystyrene microplastic exposure at low doses on male fertility: an experimental study in rats.

Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), widely used in commercial and pharmaceutical products, are emerging endocrine-disrupting pollutants with potential reproductive toxicity. This study evaluated the dose-dependent effects of PS-MPs on adult male rats by assessing semen quality, reproductive hormones, oxidative stress, mitochondrial and inflammatory markers, and testicular histology. Rats were assigned to six groups: a control group and five groups receiving PS-MPs orally (0.1, 1, 10, 20, or 40 µg/kg BW) for 45 days. PS-MP exposure reduced sperm count and motility, increased abnormal sperm, dec

Maternal-Derived Polystyrene Nanoplastics Impair Early Retinal Development in Zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The ubiquitous presence of nanoplastics (NPs) has drawn widespread attention for their accumulation in reproductive tissues, posing latent threats to the delicate retina. Nevertheless, the transgenerational effects of maternally transferred NPs on embryonic retinal morphogenesis and functional development remain largely uncharacterized. Here, we microinjected 60 nm polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) into the animal pole of zebrafish zygotes to simulate maternal exposure. PS-NP exposure caused pronounced effects in zebrafish larvae at 3 days postfertilization (dpf). At this key developmental stage, expos

Artificial plasticenta: how polystyrene nanoplastics affect in-vitro cultured human trophoblast cells.

BACKGROUND: In the human placenta, we have detected the MPs by Raman microspectroscopy analysis and, for the first time, with transmission electron microscopy. MPs fragments have been localized in different compartments of placental tissue, free in the cytoplasm and within organelles like lysosomes. Moreover, their presence has been correlated with ultrastructural alterations of some cell organelles, typical of metabolic stress, mainly dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum and numerous swollen electrodense mitochondria, as well as signs derived from involuting organelles. As a result, we have sp

Polystyrene nanoplastics trigger ferroptosis in Nrf2-deficient gut via ether phospholipid accumulation.

The widespread environmental presence of nanoplastics (NPs) raises significant concerns about their health impacts, particularly on the gastrointestinal system, as NPs are primarily ingested. While previous studies have linked NP-induced intestinal toxicity to oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, the specific mechanisms of cell death remain unclear. Here, we showed that environmentally relevant concentrations of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) induced ferroptosis, a form of lipid peroxidation-driven cell death, in intestinal epithelial cells. Using intestinal epit

Exploring the Impact of Polystyrene Microplastic Beads on Male Gonads of the Marine Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Plastic, with its remarkable versatility and numerous applications, has greatly benefited humanity. However, its extreme resistance to natural degradation means it persists in the environment for long periods, causing global environmental problems. Furthermore, the fragmentation of plastic waste leads to the formation of microplastics (MP), which are minuscule particles that can accumulate in aquatic ecosystems. This poses a threat to marine fauna and, indirectly, to humans, as it also endangers the reproductive health of individuals. This study aimed to investigate the effects of microplastic

Effects of Sub-Chronic Exposure to Polystyrene Nanoplastics on Lipid and Antioxidant Metabolism in Sparus aurata.

Nanoplastics (NPs) can cross cellular membranes and affect cellular performance. This study aims to determine the effects of polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs, 44 nm) on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) exposed for 14 days to 100 μg/L PS-NPs. The results show that biometric indicators (weight, length, Fulton's condition factor, and hepatosomatic index) were not affected after the experimental exposures. No significant effects were observed on white blood cell count, red blood cell count, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, or platelets compared to the control group. However, there was a significant decrease i

Probiotics as a therapeutic approach to alleviate reproductive harm from polystyrene microplastics in male rats.

Microplastics (MP) are considered as a new persistent environmental pollutant. The study investigated the impact of probiotics on reproductive toxicity induced by polystyrene microplastics (PS-MP). It was observed that PS-MP administration caused dose-dependent testicular damage and negatively regulated the expression of kisspeptin and its receptors in the hypothalamus. However, supplementation of probiotics significantly mitigated oxidative stress and inflammation in cell experiments. In animal experiments, probiotics were found to improve testicular damage, decrease sperm nitric oxide, and i

Crystallinity- dependent heteroaggregation and co-sedimentation between polystyrene nanoplastics and iron (hydro)oxides.

Iron (hydro)oxides (IOs) with different crystallinities are widespread in the aquatic environment. They coexist with nanoplastics (NPs) and tend to interact with each other. The properties of minerals can greatly influence the heteroaggregation of minerals and NPs, being manifested not only in the heteroaggregation capacity but also in the interaction mode. This study investigated the heteroaggregation and co-sedimentation between polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and IOs with different crystallinity. We found that the zeta potential of IOs increased with rising IOs crystallinity. DLVO calculat

Chronic environmental exposure to polystyrene microplastics increases the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Microplastics (MPs), as the crucial environmental pollutants, can be easily transported into the human body and accumulate in the liver. However, current studies mainly focus on acute exposure to MPs, investigations on long-term interactions with MPs alone remain limited. Thereby, we examined noxious properties of MPs and selected the most common polystyrene (PS) MPs as the research object, including unmodified PS MPs (PS-MPs) and positive-charged PS MPs (PS-NH2) at 10 mg/L employing oral drinking water methods in mice for six consecutive months in vivo. In vitro, we treated the human hepatocy

Developmental cardiovascular disruption triggered by polystyrene nanoplastics in zebrafish mediated through oxidative stress.

The rising prevalence of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) in aquatic ecosystems poses not only ecological threats but also growing concerns for human health, particularly through their potential to interfere with cardiovascular development and function. This study investigated the cardiotoxic effects of PSNPs (25 nm) exposure on zebrafish embryos, a well-established vertebrate model in toxicology. PSNPs were exposed on Tg(fli1: EGFP) zebrafish embryos at concentrations of 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 μg/mL for 96 h post-fertilization (hpf). Cardiovascular function and morphology were evaluated during

Influence of Polystyrene Microplastics on Mitochondrial Oxidative Damage in Renal and Muscular Tissues of the Freshwater Fish.

Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), an emerging environmental contaminant, have attracted significant concern in recent years. This study aimed to evaluate mitochondrial oxidative damage in renal and muscular tissues of the freshwater fish Anabas testudineus following exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations (13.6 mg L⁻1 and 23.6 mg L⁻1) of PS-MPs for 1, 7, and 15 days. Exposure to PS-MPs disrupted the antioxidant defense system within the mitochondrial compartments of renal and muscle tissues, leading to increased levels of hydrogen peroxide generation and lipid peroxidation. Polystyrene Nanoplastics Exposure Alters Gut Microbiota and Correlates with Egg Quality Parameters in Chickens.

NPs have become a concerning global environmental problem. Dietary exposure to NPs can cause microbial dysbiosis. However, the risks of NPs to animals, particularly poultry species such as chickens, remain poorly understood. In this study, chickens were continuously exposed to 100 nm NPs via dietary inclusion from 18 weeks of age for 120 days to evaluate the effects of NPs on intestinal health. We found that NPs accumulated in chicken intestinal tissues, leading to adverse alterations in the intestinal mucosal structure, such as villus atrophy and goblet cell depletion, and significantly alter

Fabrication, characterization, and in vivo biosafety evaluation of starch-based bioplastic as a sustainable alternative to polystyrene.

The widespread use of synthetic plastics such as polystyrene raises concerns over long-term environmental persistence and biological toxicity. Although bioplastics offer a promising alternative, their in vivo biosafety and comparative evaluation with conventional plastics remain insufficiently explored. The study aimed to develop and characterize a starch-based bioplastic derived from Eriobotrya japonica (loquat) seeds and to evaluate its in vivo biosafety in Swiss albino mice. The novelty of this work lies in utilizing an underreported starch source and performing a direct comparison with pol

Exposure to high dose of polystyrene nanoplastics causes trophoblast cell apoptosis and induces miscarriage.

BACKGROUND: With rapid increase in the global use of various plastics, microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) pollution and their adverse health effects have attracted global attention. MPs have been detected out in human body and both MPs and NPs showed female reproductive toxicological effects in animal models. Miscarriage (abnormal early embryo loss), accounting for 15-25% pregnant women worldwide, greatly harms human reproduction. However, the adverse effects of NPs on miscarriage have never been explored. RESULTS: In this study, we identified that polystyrene (PS) plastics particles
