Diabetes and risk of acute infectious conjunctivitis--a population-based case-control study.

AIMS: To examine whether diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of acute infectious conjunctivitis (AIC) in adults, as measured by treatment with topical ocular antibiotics. METHODS: A population-based, case-control study in North Jutland County, Denmark. Incident cases of AIC were defined as persons aged more than 15 years redeeming a first-time prescription for a topical ocular antibiotic during 1999 in the County Prescription Database. Five gender- and age-matched population control subjects per case were selected using a unique personal identifier, the Civil Registry Numbe

Serum osteoprotegerin is increased in Crohn's disease: a population-based case control study.

BACKGROUND: There is a potential interface between osteoporosis and the chronic inflammation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and the osteoprotegerin (OPG)/receptor for activated nuclear factor-kappaB (RANK)/RANK ligand (RANKL) signaling pathway may be an important mediator, although data are limited. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control seroassay study to look for alterations in serum OPG and soluble RANKL (sRANKL). The study population included IBD patients who were 18 to 50 years old with Crohn's disease (CD; n = 287) or ulcerative colitis (UC; n = 166), age-matched he

Relationship between bleeding time test and postextraction bleeding in a healthy control population.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether cutaneous bleeding time (BT) is related to bleeding outcome measures after a single tooth extraction. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective clinical pilot study of 30 subjects. Cutaneous BT was evaluated before a single tooth extraction. After extraction, an oral BT was determined. Subjects were contacted 3 to 7 hours and 2 days after extraction to assess further postoperative bleeding. RESULTS: The mean cutaneous BT was 5.9 minutes (range 1.5-10.0 minutes). The mean oral BT was 7.5 minutes (range 0-20 minutes). Cutaneous BT did not correlate with ora

Occupation and leukemia: a population-based case-control study in Iowa and Minnesota.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that risk of leukemia may be associated with occupational or industrial exposures and risk may vary by the histological type of the disease. METHODS: A population-based case-control study was conducted in Iowa and Minnesota to evaluate the association between various occupations, industries, and occupational exposures and leukemia risk. A total of 513 cases and 1,087 controls was included in the study. A lifetime occupational history and other risk factor information were collected through in-person interviews, and a job-exposure matrix was used to assess po

Occupation, education, and Parkinson's disease: a case-control study in an Italian population.

Current epidemiologic data on the association between occupational exposures and Parkinson's disease (PD) are inconsistent. In a case-control study, we investigated the associations between occupation and PD and between education and PD. The cases (n = 62) were those identified in a prevalence survey (door-to-door, two-phase) of three Sicilian municipalities, as a November 1, 1987. We then randomly selected from the general population two controls for each case, matched for age ( +/- year), sex, and municipality (n = 124). Risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer's disease: a population-based, case-control study.

Our current knowledge of risk factors for Alzheimer's disease is limited and primarily addresses early-onset disease. This study aimed to determine the risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer's disease using a case-control approach. Ninety-eight cases and 216 controls were gathered from an ongoing population survey on aging and dementia in Stockholm (the Kungsholmen Project). We found a high relative risk (3.2; 95% confidence interval, 1.8-5.7) with the presence of at least one first-degree relative affected by dementia. Among all the other risk factors, alcohol abuse (relative risk, 4.4; 95% co

Relationship between alcohol consumption and hypertension prevalence and control in a French population.

Six thousand six hundred thirty two subjects, employed in 420 small and medium-sized companies in the Paris region were examined in a cross-sectional study. Their alcohol consumption, as obtained by interview was found to be higher among males than among females, among workers than among managers, executives, and clerks. Alcohol consumption was positively associated with age, body mass index, coffee and cigarette consumption, occupational exposure to noise and working nights or alternating shifts. A positive, continuous, relationship was observed, for men and women, between alcohol intake and

Association between autoimmune diseases and COVID-19 as assessed in both a test-negative case-control and population case-control design.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 epidemic has paralleled with the so called infodemic, where countless pieces of information have been disseminated on putative risk factors for COVID-19. Among those, emerged the notion that people suffering from autoimmune diseases (AIDs) have a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: The cohort included all COVID-19 cases residents in the Agency for Health Protection (AHP) of Milan that, from the beginning of the outbreak, developed a web-based platform that traced positive and negative cases as well as related contacts. AIDs subjects were defined ad having one th

[Implantable devices for permanent venous access. A single-center prospective study comparing an AIDS population with a control population (80 cases)].

Although the tolerance of indwelling catheters in AIDS patients has been evaluated, the complications of implanted devices in this population are unknown. This encouraged us to compare in a prospective unicenter trial, dealing with 80 consecutive implanted devices, the complications of this kind of system in 20 AIDS patients, versus a control population. The follow-up was 10,658 days. No patient was excluded or lost to follow-up. In the control population, the infection rate was 5% (0.036 per 100 catheter days). We observed 3 thromboses (5%). In the AIDS group, the infection rate was 25% (0.21

Chronic gastric ulcer and stress. A comparison of an ulcer population with a control population regarding stressful events over a lifetime.

Stress was measured by the frequency of 31 major life events with consequent change and distress scores in 50 patients with chronic gastric ulcer and 50 control subjects, matched for age, sex and place of residence. The gastric ulcer population did not differ from the control population regarding the number of events experienced and the associated change and distress scores. However, when analysed according to social grade, the ulcer patients in the lower status suburbs experienced more events and more change than their controls, but the stress scores were similar. In the higher status suburbs
