Postmortem tissue biomarkers of menopausal transition.

The menopausal transition (MT) is associated with an increased risk for many disorders including neurological and mental disorders. Brain imaging studies in living humans show changes in brain metabolism and structure that may contribute to the MT-associated brain disease risk. Although deficits in ovarian hormones have been implicated, cellular and molecular studies of the brain undergoing MT are currently lacking, mostly due to a difficulty in studying MT in postmortem human brain. To enable this research, we explored 39 candidate biomarkers for menopausal status in 42 pre-, peri-, and post-

Unusual foreign bodies visualized by postmortem computed tomography in a deceased with borderline personality disorder.

The objective of this case report is the visualization and assessment of ingested or inserted foreign bodies by postmortem computed tomography and autopsy. The presence of foreign objects in the gastrointestinal tract involves, among many other medical subdisciplines, the fields of forensic medicine and psychiatry. We present a case of an 18-year-old female Caucasian with borderline personality disorder who was found unconscious in a closed psychiatric ward with suspected ingested foreign bodies. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was unsuccessful. Postmortem computed tomography revealed several sh

Neuropathologic scales of cerebrovascular disease associated with diffusion changes on MRI.

Summarizing the multiplicity and heterogeneity of cerebrovascular disease (CVD) features into a single measure has been difficult in both neuropathology and imaging studies. The objective of this work was to evaluate the association between neuroimaging surrogates of CVD and two available neuropathologic CVD scales in those with both antemortem imaging CVD measures and postmortem CVD evaluation. Individuals in the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging with MRI scans within 5 years of death (N = 51) were included. Antemortem CVD measures were computed from diffusion MRI (dMRI), FLAIR, and T2* GRE imaging

Living and post-mortem CT scans in the gross anatomy lab: A study investigating differences in first-year medical students' exam performance and perceptions.

Basic competency in radiological imaging is essential for physicians to identify and manage diseases. An optimal place in which to include imaging in the medical curriculum is during anatomy as students can correlate the 3D anatomy from their body donors with the 2D cross-sectional anatomy. The goal of this project was to enhance first-year medical students' knowledge of cross-sectional imaging in the gross anatomy lab and to investigate whether there are benefits to learning cross sectional imaging via scans from body donors versus living individuals. Student participant performance was evalu

Enhancing trauma evaluation: Comparative analysis of post-mortem computed tomography and autopsy findings in abdominal stab wounds.

In cases of traumatic deaths, accurate assessment of injuries is essential for both legal and medical purposes. This case report compares the findings of post-mortem computed tomography with conventional autopsy methods in assessing abdominal stab wounds. A 34-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds in the abdomen underwent post-mortem examination, including computed tomography imaging. Computed tomography revealed specific breaches in the skin's continuity and internal injuries, including perforation of the stomach. A conventional autopsy confirmed the presence of multiple stab wounds and as

Ingestion of fishing gear and Anisakis sp. infection in a beached Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) in the Jeju Island, Republic of Korea: findings from post-mortem computed tomography and necropsy.

BACKGROUND: Human fishing activities have significantly affect environmental concern for marine ecosystems, conservation of marine mammals, and human health. Coastal cetaceans are highly vulnerable to ingestion of fishing gear, bycatching, or entanglement, all of which can be fatal for these animals. In particular, certain coastal dolphins and porpoises are heavily impacted by fishing gear such as angling gear or stownet, as their food often overlap with the target fish species of human fisheries. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a case of an Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena p

MRI of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. II. Postmortem MRI and histopathological study of the brain in 16 cases of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis of juvenile or late infantile type.

Postmortem MRI was carried out on the formalin-fixed brains of 14 patients with juvenile (JNCL) and two with late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, one of variant and the other of classical type. Two patients with JNCL had also undergone MRI during life. After MRI, specimens for histopathological analysis were taken from standard areas of the cerebral cortex, deep nuclei and white matter. The signal intensity of the periventricular white matter was usually higher than that of the peripheral white matter, a finding which correlated with the severe periventricular loss of myelin and glio

Tearing of the left iliac vessels in lumbar surgery revealed by multiphase post-mortem CT-angiography (MPMCTA).

Lumbar surgery is regularly applied in cases of discal hernia and acquired lumbar stenosis. In this report, we present a case of a laceration in the left common iliac artery and iliac vein during a lumbar surgery and discuss the literature concerning this kind of event. In the present case, the surgical procedure was followed by a sudden decrease in blood pressure, and the surgeon discovered an intra-abdominal haemorrhage that led to the patient's death. Postmortem investigation confirmed the intra-abdominal haemorrhage and revealed a laceration of the proximal portion of the left common iliac

The Added Value of Longitudinal Imaging for Preclinical In Vivo Efficacy Testing of Therapeutic Compounds against Cerebral Cryptococcosis.

Brain infections with Cryptococcus neoformans are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Cryptococcosis typically presents as meningoencephalitis or fungal mass lesions called cryptococcomas. Despite frequent in vitro discoveries of promising novel antifungals, the clinical need for drugs that can more efficiently treat these brain infections remains. A crucial step in drug development is the evaluation of in vivo drug efficacy in animal models. This mainly relies on survival studies or postmortem analyses in large groups of animals, but these techniques only provide information

Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in patients with anosmia and hypothalamic hypogonadism (Kallmann's syndrome).

Kallmann's syndrome is characterized by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. Postmortem studies have revealed either hypoplasia or aplasia of the rhinencephalon, respectively, in patients with hyposmia and anosmia. This anatomical defect has now been demonstrated in vivo in four patients with Kallmann's syndrome by magnetic resonance imaging.

Noninvasive tissue characterization: diagnosis of lipomatous hypertrophy of the atrial septum by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.

An atrial septal mass was identified by echocardiogram in a patient with multiple subcutaneous lipomas. In order to differentiate the benign condition of lipomatous hypertrophy from myxoma, thrombus and other tumors, nuclear magnetic resonance and computed tomographic imaging were performed. Both techniques identified the adipose nature of the tissue noninvasively, consistent with the diagnosis of lipomatous hypertrophy. Pathologically demonstrated lipomatous hypertrophy in a postmortem heart was similarly characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.

Visualization of left common carotid artery injury by glass using postmortem virtual angioscopy.

A deceased man in his 50 s was found with his neck over a broken glass door frame, with blood around the body. A non-contrast postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) scan revealed subcutaneous hemorrhage, temporal bone fracture, and cerebral contusion. Also, wounds extending from the anterior to posterior neck and the presence of air in the cervical vessels suggested cervical vascular injury. A virtual angioscopy image reconstructed from PMCT angiography data revealed a ruptured left common carotid artery and allowed accurate measurement of the injury. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of

Quantified comparison of frontal sinus patterns by means of computed tomography.

The observation of frontal sinus patterning is a well-established technique of personal identification in forensic anthropology. Variations in size, shape, symmetry, border outline, and the presence and number of septa and cells are compared using antemortem and postmortem radiographs. Traditionally, a standard frontal view is utilized. Computed tomography produces contiguous radiographic images of the cranium at predetermined increments. Multiple comparisons of the sinus configuration can therefore be made at different levels. The use of different 'window' settings (attenuation coefficient ra

Pulmonary tumor embolism: A retrospective study over a 30-year period.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tumor embolism (PTE) is difficult to detect before death, and it is unclear whether the discrepancy between antemortem clinical and postmortem diagnosis improves with the advance of the diagnostic technologies. In this study we determined the incidence of PTE and analyzed the discrepancy between antemortem clinical and postmortem diagnosis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective autopsy study on patients with the history of malignant solid tumors from 1990 to 2020 and reviewed all the slides of the patients with PTE. We also analyzed the discrepancies between antemortem c

Gas, Gaps, and Grayscale: A pattern-based postmortem computed tomography approach in recognizing heat hematoma in charred bodies.

Thermal injury produces significant postmortem alterations that may mimic traumatic intracranial haemorrhage, posing a diagnostic challenge during medicolegal investigation. This study aimed to describe a pattern-based approach for recognising heat hematoma on postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) in fatal fire exposure cases by highlighting characteristic imaging features that may assist forensic interpretation. Two cases of fatal fire exposure underwent non-contrast PMCT before conventional medicolegal autopsy. PMCT findings were systematically evaluated for morphology, attenuation, distribu

Transectional echo planar imaging of the heart in cyanotic congenital heart disease.

Echo planar imaging is that form of magnetic resonance imaging which gives very short image acquisition times. The method has been used to produce images of the infant heart which are free of cardiorespiratory motion artefact, despite tachypnoea and tachycardia. EPI transections of the normal heart are compared with transections in truncus arteriosus, tetralogy of Fallot, right heart hypoplasia and transposition of the great arteries. The diagnosis of the cause of cyanosis in these infants was established by the noninvasive EPI method and validation of the findings may be found in transectiona

iPSC-modelling reveals genetic associations and morphological alterations of oligodendrocytes in schizophrenia.

There is strong evidence for a genetically driven neuronal contribution in schizophrenia (SCZ). Although imaging and postmortem studies also provide evidence for white matter alterations with implications of the oligodendroglial lineage in SCZ, it is unclear whether these disturbances are a secondary consequence of neuronal deficits or also, at least in parts, genetically driven and cell-autonomous. Using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) in combination with gene set enrichment analysis, we investigated the cellular impact of SCZ genetics on the oligodendroglial lineage. We perform

Associations of phosphorylated tau pathology with whole-hemisphere ex vivo morphometry in 7 tesla MRI.

INTRODUCTION: Neurodegenerative disorders are associated with different pathologies that often co-occur but cannot be measured specifically with in vivo methods. METHODS: Thirty-three brain hemispheres from donors with an Alzheimer's disease (AD) spectrum diagnosis underwent T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Gray matter thickness was paired with histopathology from the closest anatomic region in the contralateral hemisphere. RESULTS: Partial Spearman correlation of phosphorylated tau and cortical thickness with TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) and α-synuclein scores, age, sex,
