Postprandial lipemia: an under-recognized atherogenic factor in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Atherosclerotic disease is the leading cause of both morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. In these patients, postprandial dyslipidemia include not only quantitative but also qualitative abnormalities of lipoproteins which are potentially atherogenic and seems to be a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease since there is evidence that it results in endothelial dysfunction and enhanced oxidative stress. The most common pattern of postprandial dyslipidemia in diabetes consists of high concentrations of triglycerides, higher VLDLs production by the liver and a decr

Postprandial hyperglycemia is a possible contributor to paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: a case report.

Atrial fibrillation, a major risk factor for stroke, is believed to occur first as paroxysmal episodes, gradually becoming more persistent, and finally progressing to chronic atrial fibrillation. Treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation is an important target to prevent chronic atrial fibrillation. We describe a very unique case with postprandial hyperglycemia and obesity associated with drug-refractory paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. A 73-year-old Japanese woman with postprandial hyperglycemia suffered from drug-refractory paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. A 1600 kcal/day diet and walking th

[Experimental study of the infecting ability of the flea Coptopsylla lamellifer rostrata in the Kyzylkum natural focus of plague].

Experimental infecting of the fleas Coptopsylla lamellifer rostrata by plague was carried out. The fleas were infected by feeding through biomembrane (skin of a white mouse) with a mixture of defibrinated blood of guinea-pig and plague microbes. Under concentration 2-3 milliard of the microbes in 1 millilitre, from 60 to 100% of the fleas were infected. Forming of the block of proventriculus was observed in 9-13 day. Mean percent of blocking for all experiments was less than 1%. Maximal rate of blocking (2.8%) was observed in the experiment under everyday 3-hour feeding. After planting of the

Effect of truncal vagotomy on gallbladder bile kinetics in conscious dogs.

Previous studies on the effects of vagotomy on gallbladder (GB) motility have yielded conflicting results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of vagotomy on GB motility and bile kinetics using a new method. Twelve dogs were divided into two groups of six (control and pyloroplasty) and, 4 weeks later, underwent truncal vagotomy. A catheter secured in the GB fundus was used to monitor GB volume. After injecting polyethylene glycol (PEG) into the GB, combined measurements of GB volume and PEG concentration enabled GB emptying and bile kinetics to be estimated. Seven and five of the

[The impact of regulation of postprandial glucose in practice].

Meal and post-meal periods define a post-prandial state covering about 66% of day duration and characterized by a glucose and other nutrients influx into the blood flow. Post-prandial hyperglycemia can be an early feature of glucose intolerance, indicating a failure to control for post-prandial glucose load, but mostly characterizes type 2 diabetes, reflecting quantitative and/or qualitative abnormalities in insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells. Post-prandial hyperglycemia contributes to raise glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, which as an indicator of total glycemic load, is tightly cor

Increased gall bladder volume in primary sclerosing cholangitis.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) requires invasive procedures such as liver biopsy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC). Sonographic measurement of fasting gall bladder volume, which has been reported to be enlarged in PSC, could serve as a non-invasive screening test. METHODS: Fasting gall bladder volume was studied in patients with PSC (n = 24), primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC, n = 13), liver cirrhosis due to other causes (n = 18), ulcerative colitis (n = 15), and healthy controls (n = 23). Meal induced gall bladder emptying was studied in patients

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists May Reduce Insulin Requirements in New-Onset Type 1 Diabetes.

Early stage 3 type 1 diabetes is a period of rapid pathophysiologic change. Flagging beta-cell secretion is accompanied by postprandial hyperglucagonemia, impaired incretin amplification, beta-cell stress, and insulin resistance. Incretin-based therapy may align favorably with these defects by augmenting glucose-dependent insulin secretion, improving postprandial hyperglucagonemia, reducing beta-cell stress and insulin resistance. Randomized trials initiating glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist therapy soon after diagnosis demonstrate lower insulin requirements and better-preserved stimul

Effects of glucagon-like peptide-1(7-36)amide on antro-pyloro-duodenal motility in the interdigestive state and with duodenal lipid perfusion in humans.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1(7-36)amide (GLP-1) is a gut hormone released postprandially. Synthetic GLP-1 strongly inhibits gastric emptying in healthy subjects and in patients with diabetes mellitus. AIMS: To investigate the effects of GLP-1 on antro-pyloro-duodenal motility in humans. METHODS: Eleven healthy male volunteers were studied on two separate days. On the interdigestive study day, a basal period was followed by a 60 minute period of saline infusion and two further 60 minute periods of intravenous infusion of GLP-1 0.4 and 1.2 pmol/kg/min to achieve postprandial and supraph

Feeding induces morphological remodeling but not metabolic activation in Boa constrictor (Serpentes, Boidae).

Feeding promotes increases in the mass, as well as in the secretory and absorptive capacities of the gastrointestinal organs, in addition to elevating the aerobic metabolic rate of several ectothermic vertebrates. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying these morphological and metabolic changes remain unclear. It has been proposed that the transition from fasting to the postprandial state is accompanied by upregulation of biochemical pathways to meet the energy demands of nutrient absorption. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether feeding affects the activity of enzymes invo

Immune modulation in response to coffee intake: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Coffee consumption has been associated with various health benefits; however, the underlying biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the acute effects of coffee on circulating cytokines and the specific role of caffeine compared with the whole coffee matrix are still insufficiently characterised in humans. To our knowledge, no previous human study has directly compared immune modulation by coffee versus caffeine alone. We therefore aimed to elucidate the effect of a usual caffeine dose of 130 mg on postprandial cytokine secretion, and whether responses differ be

Glucose circadian rhythm disruption is associated with preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal death during pregnancy, and the role of circadian rhythms in predicting preeclampsia is not well understood. We aimed to determine whether glucose circadian rhythm disruption is associated with preeclampsia and can be used to predict this disorder. We analyzed a dataset of 92 pregnant individuals recruited with Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM). To study rhythmicity, we performed a cosinor analysis using the packages cosinor and cosinor2, and we calculated the non-parametric circadian rhythm variables using the nparACT package in R. Furthermore, we

Dietary Polyphenols in Type 2 Diabetes: A Metabolite-Centric Review of Human Evidence.

Dietary polyphenols are studied as potential adjuncts for type 2 diabetes (T2D), although many reviews still rely on an antioxidant framework that does not adequately reflect human exposure. This review organises the evidence around two metabolite waves, namely early postprandial phase-II conjugates produced by host enzymes within 0 to 4 h of a polyphenol-rich meal, and microbiome-derived catabolites including urolithins and γ-valerolactones that peak at 6 to 24 h. This biphasic interpretation is advanced as a hypothesis-generating framework rather than as an established explanation, and it of

Temperature drives the pace, not the price, of postprandial growth in Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus).

Body temperature influences all physiological processes in ectotherms, including the rise in metabolism upon feeding (SDA response). In reptiles, elevated temperatures increase the magnitude of the SDA response but shorten its duration with total energy expenditure remaining unaffected. Recent studies show that feeding induces a several-fold elevation of protein synthesis in various organs of pythons, but the effects of temperature on postprandial protein synthesis remain unexplored. We therefore measured relative changes in postprandial protein synthesis in skeletal muscle and visceral organs

Switched Controllers in Fully Closed Loop Insulin Delivery Systems: Reducing the Trade-Off Between Prandial Control and Safety.

BACKGROUND: One of the main challenges in control algorithm design for full closed-loop automated insulin delivery systems is the trade-off between the effective compensation of meal-related disturbances and ensuring user safety during the postprandial and fasting periods. METHODS: This paper proposes and evaluates the performance of a switched tuning strategy, a promising but relatively underexplored solution in this domain. This method employs two distinct tunings of a primary control algorithm: an aggressive tuning for meal compensation and a conservative tuning for fasting periods. The an

Characterization of a Duodenal Propagating Wave Identified on High-Resolution Antroduodenal Manometry During the Digestive Phase.

BACKGROUND: The duodenal digestive phase shows irregular non-propagating pressure contractions on antroduodenal manometry (ADM). This study aims to characterize a specific duodenal wave during this phase using high-resolution ADM (HR-ADM). METHODS: Twenty HR-ADM traces were analyzed. Duodenal waves were identified during meal ingestion and postprandially and assessed for: peaks/min, mean amplitude, area under the curve (AUC), frequency, propagation length, and velocity. Wave parameters and characteristics are described and compared according to patient symptomatology. KEY RESULTS: Median pat

Prevalence of postprandial hypotension in older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with postprandial hypotension (PPH) increase susceptibility to falls, syncope, stroke, acute cardiovascular diseases and even death. However, the prevalence of this condition varies significantly across studies. We aimed to determine the prevalence of PPH in older adults. METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and CINAHL were searched from their inception until February 2023. Search terms included 'postprandial period', 'hypotension' and 'postprandial hypotension'. Eligible studies were assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. Meta-analyses
