INTRODUCTION: Stroke is one of the most debilitating diseases among adults worldwide and leads to persistent rehabilitation needs even at the chronic stage. Achieving good postural control is a critical requirement for daily activities which enhances quality of life (QoL) in patients with stroke. There is increasing evidence that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can be considered a promising adjunct technique to improve motor recovery after stroke. Evidence of augmented neuroplasticity after tDCS suggests that paired rehabilitation followed by consecutive use of tDCS may optimize

INTRODUCTION: A single session of exercises-inducing motor unit recruitment has been reported to immediately improve static and dynamic postural balance in different populations. It remains unclear whether such an effect occurs in patients with piriformis muscle syndrome (PMS). Thus, this study aimed to explore the immediate effect of hip exercises-inducing motor unit recruitment on postural balance in these patients.
METHODS: In this pre-post-repeated measure study design, twelve patients with PMS were enrolled. These patients participated in a single session of hip exercises-inducing motor

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated that children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) exhibit postural instabilities, as well as balance and gait disorders, due to the vestibular dysfunction that they are prone to display as a consequence of inner ear injury. Thus, some experiments have proposed vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs as a treatment to improve these motor skills in children with SNHL.
OBJECTIVE: Assess the evidence quality of the trials that used vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs to improve the postural control, balance and gait of children with S

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) affects approximately 40% of patients within 1 year after a first-time acute lateral ankle sprain. While arthroscopic anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) repair is preferred when conservative treatment fails, early postoperative balance training is limited by weight-bearing restrictions. Cross-education, which transfers training benefits from one limb to the contralateral untrained limb, has demonstrated efficacy in improving postural control under conservative care; however, its postoperative utility remains poorly understood. This study investigat

BACKGROUND: Height-induced postural threat, such as standing or walking at elevation, elicits fear-related adaptations in balance control. Understanding these adaptations is crucial for interpreting motor behavior under anxiety and for informing rehabilitation and fall-prevention interventions. However, no previous systematic review with meta-analysis has quantified how height exposure influences balance performance.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to aggregate, characterize, and quantify the effects of height-related postural threat on static and dynamic balance performance.
METHODS: A systema

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Enhancing physical function and quality of life in older adults at higher risk of falls is challenging because of the lack of established interventions. This study examines the impact of a 6-week balance training program using the shuttle balance device on gait speed, postural control, and quality of life in older men.
METHODS: This single-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted in a research laboratory. Thirty-two participants aged ≥60 years were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (EG; n = 16) or a control group (CG; n = 14). The EG participat

Background: Poststroke hemiparesis presents with motor asymmetry and decreased postural control leading to functional limitations. Serious games (SG) for balance rehabilitation of people with stroke may improve motor recovery, and the visual and auditory feedback provided by the SGs helps to explain the therapeutic benefits. However, the contribution of SG combined with kinesthetic and verbal cues during balance training has not been investigated. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of two feedback conditions for an SG balance intervention, with or without the addition of kinesthet

Problems with balance, postural control, and fear of falling are highly prevalent in lower limb prosthesis users, with much research conducted to understand these issues. The variety of tools used to assess these concepts presents a challenge when interpreting research outcomes. This systematic review aimed to provide a synthesis of quantifiable methods used in the evaluation of balance, postural control, and fear of falling in lower limb prosthesis users with an amputation level at or proximal to the ankle joint. A systematic search was conducted in CINAHL, Medline, AMED, Cochrane, AgeLine, S

Adult aging is associated with reductions in muscle function and standing balance control. However, whether sensorimotor function adapts to maintain upright posture in the presence of age-related muscle weakness is unclear. The purpose was to determine whether vestibular control of balance is altered in older compared to younger females and whether vestibular-evoked balance responses are related to muscle power. Eight young (22.6 ± 1.8 years) and eight older (69.7 ± 6.7 years) females stood quietly on a force plate, while subjected to random, continuous electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS;

BACKGROUND: Adults with sedentary lifestyles seem to face a higher risk of falling in their later years. Several causes, such as impairment of strength, coordination, and cognitive function, influence worsening health conditions, including balancing ability. Many modalities can be applied to improve the balance function and prevent falling. Several studies have also recorded the effects of balance training in elderly adults for fall prevention. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to define the effect of virtual reality-based balance training on motor learning and postural control abilities i

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively assess dynamic balance with accuracy in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). To this aim, a motion capture system was used while participants performed the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT). Reached distances for the 8 points of the star were automatically computed, thereby excluding any dependence to the experimenter. In addition, new relevant variables were also computed, such as absolute time needed to reach each distance, lower limb ranges of motion during unipodal stance, as well as absolute error of pointing.

Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is one of the most common injuries incurred during sporting activities, and effective rehabilitation programs for this condition are challenging to develop. The purpose of this research was to compare the effect of 6 weeks of balance training on either a mini-trampoline or a dura disc on postural sway and to determine if the mini-trampoline or the dura disc is more effective in improving postural sway. Twenty subjects (11 men, 9 women) with a mean age of 25.4 +/- 4.2 years were randomly allocated into a control group, a dura disc training (DT) group, or a mini-trampo

Postural impairment is one of the most disorders in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), while fear of falling can exacerbate it in these patients. One of the leading causes of postural impairment and fear of falling in patients with MS is the cerebellum region's abnormalities, which may be modulated by cerebellar anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS). The present study aimed to investigate the effects of cerebellar a-tDCS concurrent with postural training (cerebellar a-CSC-PT) on postureand fear of falling in patients with MS. Thirty-seven patients with MS were assessed to
