Correlation of Macular Sparing and Homonymous Paracentral Scotomas With MRI Lesions in Posterior Cerebral Artery Infarction.

BACKGROUND: The concepts of the representation of visual field in primary visual cortex are based on studies of war wounds and correlations with brain imaging in small cohorts. Because of the difficulty of judging brain lesion extent and the small number of studied patients, there is lingering controversy as to whether the central 15° of visual field are mapped onto the posterior 25% of primary visual cortex or onto a larger area. To improve the delineation of MRI lesion extent, we have studied only patients with posterior cerebral artery (PCA) ischemic strokes. METHODS: We accrued a cohort o

Perception of visual noise patterns depends on correlations produced in V1: A simulation study.

IMPORTANCE: The cord blood proteome, a repository of proteins derived from both mother and fetus, might offer valuable insights into the physiological and pathological state of the fetus. However, its association with birth weight and growth trajectories early in life remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To identify cord blood proteins associated with birth weight and the birth weight ratio (BWR) and to evaluate the associations of these cord blood proteins with early growth trajectories. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included 288 mother-child pairs from the ongoing prospect

Cortical folding influences migraine aura symptoms in CADASIL.

OBJECTIVE: Migraine with aura is a hallmark of cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL). In contrast with the majority of CADASIL patients, some affected subjects never experience visual symptoms during their attacks of migraine with aura. The aim of this study was to determine whether specific morphology of the primary visual cortex is associated with the absence of visual symptoms during migraine aura in CADASIL. METHODS: Patients from a large cohort of CADASIL patients, aged <45 years, and with a modified Rankin's scale ≤1 were in

The role of spared calcarine cortex and lateral occipital cortex in the responses of human hemianopes to visual motion.

Some patients, who are rendered perimetrically blind in one hemifield by cortical lesions, nevertheless exhibit residual visual capacities within their field defects. The neural mechanism that mediates the residual visual responses has remained the topic of considerable debate. One explanation posits the subcortical visual pathways that bypass the primary visual cortex and innervate the extrastriate visual areas as the substrate that underlies the residual vision. The other explanation is that small islands of the primary visual cortex remain intact and provide the signals for residual vision.

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation does not alter GABA concentration or functional connectivity in the normal visual cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Anodal direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) of the visual cortex is a potential rehabilitation tool for vision disorders such as amblyopia and macular degeneration. However, the underlying neural mechanisms are currently unknown. When applied to the human motor cortex, a-tDCS reduces the concentration of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter that modulates neuroplasticity. Our primary aim was to assess whether the same a-tDCS paradigm alters local GABA concentration when applied to the healthy primary visual cortex. We also measured the effect of a-tDCS on

Regular cannabis use modulates gamma functional connectivity with V1 during visual processing.

Cannabis is a widely-used illicit substance in the United States, and heavy cannabis use has been linked to deficits across multiple cognitive domains. Mechanistically, cannabis affects endocannabinoid receptors densely distributed among GABAergic interneurons throughout the cortex and cerebellum. Such interneuronal networks are known to be crucial in the generation of fast neural gamma-band responses, which support perceptual and cognitive processing and have been frequently implicated in cannabis use. However, studies to date have tended to focus on higher-order processing supported by gamma

Perinatal-lesion-induced reorganization of cerebral functions revealed using reversible cooling deactivation and attentional tasks.

We tested the concept that lesions of primary visual cortical areas 17 and 18 sustained on the day of birth induce a redistribution of cerebral operations underlying the ability to disengage visual attention and then redirect it to a new location. In cats, these operations are normally highly localizable to posterior middle suprasylvian (pMS) cortex. Three stimulation paradigms were used: (i) movement of a high contrast visual stimulus into the visual field; (ii) illumination of a static light-emitting diode (LED) stimulus; and (iii) a control static auditory stimulus. To test for the redistri

Functional Clusters for Shape, Texture, and Motion Encoding in Macaque V2.

Macaque primary visual cortex (V1) exhibits exquisite columnar organization, while midlevel area V4 does not. Here we investigated the functional organization and representational bases of intervening area V2 in three macaques (one male, two females) with high-density Neuropixels recordings and a variety of visual stimuli-shape, texture, drifting grating, and translational motion patches. We observed dense clusters of similarly tuned neurons often spanning ∼500 µm, consistent with a columnar structure. In terms of representational bases, V2 responses were largely explained by stimulus features

Altered patterns of blood flow response during visual stimulation in carotid artery occlusive disease.

To correctly interpret the results of functional neuroimaging studies in stroke, it is essential to understand how cerebrovascular disease influences hemodynamic response during neural activation. To investigate the effect of internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusive disease on the pattern of cerebral blood flow (CBF) response during visual stimulation, we used positron emission tomography to study 13 patients with ICA steno-occlusive lesions. We measured the changes of CBF during visual stimulation in the primary visual cortex and in the surrounding region, including the higher-order visual cor

Independent Encoding of Orientation and Mean Luminance by Mouse Visual Cortex.

Natural environments contain behaviorally relevant information along many stimulus dimensions, each of which sensory systems must encode in order to guide behaviors. For example, the mammalian visual cortex encodes features of visual scenes such as spatial information related to object identity and temporal information about the motion of those objects in space. In order to reliably encode these behaviorally relevant visual features, neural representations should be robust to changes in environmental conditions. Further, information about changes in environmental conditions, such as the lumina

Increased Self-Grooming Gates Adult Visual Cortical Plasticity through a Ventral Pallidum-Visual Cortex Pathway.

Repetitive behaviors are prominent features of multiple neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, which are frequently accompanied by abnormalities in visual processing. However, whether repetitive behavioral states themselves actively regulate visual system and through what neural mechanisms remain unclear. Using a water spray paradigm that selectively increased self-grooming in male mice, we showed ocular-dominance plasticity in adult primary visual cortex (V1) was markedly enhanced. Neurons in the ventral pallidum (VP) were activated in synchrony with self-grooming behavior. VP inhibiti

Altered neurochemical coupling in the occipital cortex in migraine with visual aura.

BACKGROUND: Visual aura is present in about one-third of migraine patients and triggering by bright or flickering lights is frequently reported. METHOD: Using migraine with visual aura patients, we investigated the neurochemical profile of the visual cortex using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Specifically, glutamate/creatine and GABA/creatine ratios were quantified in the occipital cortex of female migraine patients. RESULTS: GABA levels in the occipital cortex of migraine patients were lower than that of controls. Glutamate levels in migraine patients, but not controls, correlated with t

Peripheral sounds rapidly activate visual cortex: evidence from electrocorticography.

Neurophysiological studies with animals suggest that sounds modulate activity in primary visual cortex in the presence of concurrent visual stimulation. Noninvasive neuroimaging studies in humans have similarly shown that sounds modulate activity in visual areas even in the absence of visual stimuli or visual task demands. However, the spatial and temporal limitations of these noninvasive methods prevent the determination of how rapidly sounds activate early visual cortex and what information about the sounds is relayed there. Using spatially and temporally precise measures of local synaptic a

Can IPS reach visual awareness without V1? Evidence from TMS in healthy subjects and hemianopic patients.

TMS of the occipital cortex can elicit conscious visual percepts, the so-called phosphenes, i.e. the experience of flashes of light in the absence of an external stimulus. Previous evidence has shown that phosphenes can be elicited by TMS of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). Here, we tested whether IPS-phosphenes are generated without any contribution from the occipital cortex. In Experiment 1, healthy subjects showed that parietal phosphenes were reliable different in terms of threshold, highly variable in size and, in contrast to the occipital ones, they did not change in lateralization within

Nonuniform spike count shared variability in the mouse early visual system.

Sensory stimuli are represented by the joint activity of large populations of neurons across the mammalian cortex. Information in such responses can be affected by trial-to-trial variability. Because that variability is not independent between neurons, it has the potential to improve or degrade the amount of sensory information in the population response. How potential shared variability at different timescales is structured in neural populations, potential sources of shared variability, and how visual information in specific population is affected by variability all remain open empirical ques

Improving Peripheral Reading With Noninvasive Transcranial Electrical Stimulation of Early Visual Areas.

PURPOSE: Noninvasive transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) of the primary visual cortex can reduce crowding in peripheral vision. We investigated the effect of two tES protocols, visual cortex transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), on reading using peripheral vision, a task that is limited by visual crowding. METHODS: A double-blind, placebo-controlled experimental design was used. Forty-one heathy adults with normal visual acuity completed one active and one sham tES session. During each session, English sentences were presented o

Flexible retinotopy: motion-dependent position coding in the visual cortex.

Although the visual cortex is organized retinotopically, it is not clear whether the cortical representation of position necessarily reflects perceived position. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we show that the retinotopic representation of a stationary object in the cortex was systematically shifted when visual motion was present in the scene. Whereas the object could appear shifted in the direction of the visual motion, the representation of the object in the visual cortex was always shifted in the opposite direction. The results show that the representation of position i

Electrical stimulation mapping of the visual cortex for epilepsy surgery.

Limiting the post-operative sensory, motor, and cognitive deficits is a primary goal in epilepsy surgery, for which direct electrical stimulation (ES) remains an essential tool. However, the value of ES to predict potential deficits of visual functions, especially in cases of focal posterior epilepsy, remains unclear. In this review, we will summarize ES findings in the visual cortex, assess its predictive value for visual functions and propose recommendations to improve this value. We will examine the value of ES in the primary visual cortex, as well as in the ventral and dorsal streams. In t

Structural and functional changes of the visual cortex in early Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal-dominant inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor disturbances, psychiatric disturbances, and cognitive impairment. Visual cognitive deficits and atrophy of the posterior cerebral cortex are additionally present in early disease stages. This study aimed to assess the extent of structural and functional brain alterations of the visual cortex in HD gene carriers using different neuroimaging modalities. Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired from 18 healthy controls, 21 premanifest, and 20 manifest HD ge

Effectiveness of aperiodic retinal stimulation in improving temporal visual cortical response.

Objective.Visual prostheses can provide partial visual function in patients with retinal degenerative diseases. However, in clinical trials, patients implanted with retinal prostheses have reported perceptual fading, which is thought to be related to response desensitization. Additionally, natural stimuli consist of aperiodic events across a short temporal span, whereas periodic stimulation (fixed inter-pulse intervals (IPIs)) is the standard approach in retinal prosthesis research. In this study, we investigated how aperiodic stimulation of the epiretinal surface affects electrically evoked r
