A Hallux Valgus Surgical Planning Survey Using WBCT-based 3D Printing.

BACKGROUND: Recent literature highlights the importance of treating hallux valgus (HV) as a 3-dimensional (3D) deformity. Although 3D printing may enhance visualization of the multiplanar aspects of HV, its influence on surgical planning remains unclear. This study assessed changes in surgical plans when surgeons sequentially reviewed 2D radiographs, 3D weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT), and 3D-printed models, hypothesizing that 3D printing would have the greatest impact. METHODS: A single HV case (a 40-year-old woman, intermetatarsal angle [IMA] 21 degrees, HV angle [HVA] 47 degrees)

3D printing and acute maxillofacial trauma: an overview of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of maxillofacial injuries are functionals and aesthetics. The initial treatment must lead to consolidation without any sequelae (complete healing with no clinical symptoms). 3D printing is increasingly used in maxillofacial surgery, but data on its use in the initial phase of trauma is scarce. METHOD: We conducted a bibliographic search in PubMed’s electronic database with the following terms: maxillofacial traumatology, maxillofacial fracture, mandible fracture, maxillary fracture, zygoma fracture, LeFort fracture, fracture of the naso-ethmoido-maxillo-fronto-orbi

Regulations on excipients used in 3D printing of pediatric oral forms.

A promising solution to customize oral drug formulations for the pediatric population has been found in the use of 3D printing, in particular Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Semi-Solid Extrusion (SSE). Although formulation development is currently limited to research studies, the rapid advances in 3D printing warn of the need for regulation. Indeed, even if the developed formulations include pharmaceutical excipients used to produce traditional oral forms such as tablets, the quantities of excipients used must be adapted to the process. Therefore, the aim of this literature review is to pr

Precisely Printable Silk Fibroin/Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Alginate Bioink for 3D Printing.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting opens up many possibilities for tissue engineering, thanks to its ability to create a three-dimensional environment for cells like an extracellular matrix. However, the use of natural polymers such as silk fibroin in 3D bioprinting faces obstacles such as having a limited printability due to the low viscosity of such solutions. This study addresses these gaps by developing highly viscous, stable, and biocompatible silk fibroin-based inks. The addition of 2% carboxymethyl cellulose sodium and 1% sodium alginate to an aqueous solution containing 2.5 to 5% silk

Multimaterial 3D Laser Printing of Cell-Adhesive and Cell-Repellent Hydrogels.

Here, a straightforward method is reported for manufacturing 3D microstructured cell-adhesive and cell-repellent multimaterials using two-photon laser printing. Compared to existing strategies, this approach offers bottom-up molecular control, high customizability, and rapid and precise 3D fabrication. The printable cell-adhesive polyethylene glycol (PEG) based material includes an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) containing peptide synthesized through solid-phase peptide synthesis, allowing for precise control of the peptide design. Remarkably, minimal amounts of RGD peptide (< 0.1 wt%) suffice for impartin

3D Printing of a Biomimetic Myotendinous Junction Assisted by Artificial Intelligence.

The myotendinous junction (MTJ) facilitates force transmission between muscle and tendon to produce joint movement. The complex microarchitecture and regional mechanical heterogeneity of the myotendinous junction pose major challenges in creating this interface in vitro. Engineering this junction in vitro is challenging due to substantial fabrication difficulties in creating scaffolds with intricate microarchitecture and stiffness heterogeneity to mimic the native muscle-tendon interface. To address the current challenges in creating the MTJ in vitro, digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D pr

A proposed model of xeno-keratoplasty using 3D printing and decellularization.

Corneal opacity is a leading cause of vision impairment and suffering worldwide. Transplantation can effectively restore vision and reduce chronic discomfort. However, there is a considerable shortage of viable corneal graft tissues. Tissue engineering may address this issue by advancing xeno-keratoplasty as a viable alternative to conventional keratoplasty. In particular, livestock decellularization strategies offer the potential to generate bioartificial ocular prosthetics in sufficient supply to match existing and projected needs. To this end, we have examined the best practices and charact

Pharmaceutical 3D-printing of nanoemulsified eucalypt extracts and their antimicrobial activity.

Overcoming the health threatening consequences of staphylococcal infections and their negative socio-economic effects have become a priority in the medical, pharmaceutical, food and many other sectors globally. Staphylococcal infections are a big challenge for a global health care, since they are difficult to be diagnosed and treated. Therefore, the development of new medicinal products of plant-origin is timely and important, because bacteria have a limited ability to develop resistance to such products. In the present study, a modified eucalypt (Eucalyptus viminalis L.) extract was prepared

A personalized approach to modify axillary crutches using 3D printing technology.

3D printers can produce specific medical objects that are tailored to the individual patient's needs, and if they are combined with a personalized orthopedic rehabilitation, it can result in improved functional outcomes. We present a 26-year-old male war victim with multiple injuries in his lower and upper limbs. The use of standard crutches was impossible, so we developed a customized 3D-printed crutch with a relative low cost. The gait and balance scores-as a part of the Tinetti score-improved immediately, and the patient's QUEST 2.0 questionnaire was high after 4 weeks of the crutches use,

Three-Dimensional Printing of the Patellofemoral Joints of Patellar Instability Patients.

Three-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing comprise an important tool for orthopaedic surgeons. One area in which 3D modeling has the potential to dramatically improve our understanding of biomechanical kinematics is pathologies of the patellofemoral joint, in particular trochlear dysplasia. We describe a method for creating 3D printed models of the patellofemoral joint, including computed tomography image acquisition, image segmentation, model creation, and 3D printing. The models created can help surgeons understand and plan surgery for recurrent patellar dislocations.

Advances in 3D Printing of Highly Bioadaptive Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffolds.

The number of patients with bone defects caused by trauma, bone tumors, and osteoporosis has increased considerably. The repair of irregular, recurring, and large bone defects poses a great challenge to clinicians. Bone tissue engineering is emerging as an appropriate strategy to replace autologous bone grafting in the repair of critically sized bone defects. However, the suitability of bone tissue engineering scaffolds in terms of structure, mechanics, degradation, and the microenvironment is inadequate. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an advanced additive-manufacturing technology widely u

Syringe pump extruder and curing system for 3D printing of photopolymers.

Development of new additive manufacturing materials often requires the production of several batches of relatively large volumes in order to print and test objects. This can be difficult for many materials that are expensive or difficult to produce in large volumes on the laboratory scale. Bioprinter systems are advantageous in this regard, however, commercial systems are expensive or do not have the ability to use photopolymers. Herein, we outline a Syringe Pump Extruder and Curing System (SPECS) modification for inexpensive filament-based 3D printers which enables the use of standard bioplot

Bio-3D printing iPSC-derived human chondrocytes for articular cartilage regeneration.

Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of pain and joint immobility, the incidence of which is increasing worldwide. Currently, total joint replacement is the only treatment for end-stage disease. Scaffold-based tissue engineering is a promising alternative approach for joint repair but is subject to limitations such as poor cytocompatibility and degradation-associated toxicity. To overcome these limitations, a completely scaffold-free Kenzan method for bio-3D printing was used to fabricate cartilage constructs feasible for repairing large chondral defects. Technique tip: 3D printing surgical guide for pes cavus midfoot osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Pes cavus can be defined as an abnormal elevation of the longitudinal arches, which is often secondary to a muscle imbalance. This deformity affects the foot's three dimensions (3D) and our osteotomies are usually planned on a lateral (two-dimension) X-ray. Are we really considering all the spatial components of the deformity? The aim of this study is to present a technique tip to identify the apical plane of the pes cavus deformity and perform a midfoot dorsal-based wedge resection osteotomy by using customized 3D printed surgical guides. METHODS: Three patients underwent the pre

Using 3D Printing and Mirror Image Modeling in Orbital Floor Reconstruction.

Three-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing technologies are increasingly utilized as tools to assist in complex craniofacial reconstructions. Herein, the authors report the intraoperative use of sterilized 3D models printed in-house to mold a custom resorbable implant in the case of a pediatric patient with a unilateral complex orbital fracture. The imaging was processed with open-source software. Two patient-specific orbital models were 3D-printed (Fig. 2): a life-size print of the patient's preoperative CT scan and a left orbit reconstructed to resemble its uninjured state using mirrored-i

Three-dimensional-printing Technology in Hip and Pelvic Surgery: Current Landscape.

The use of three-dimensional (3D) printing is becoming more common, including in the field of orthopaedic surgery. There are currently four primary clinical applications for 3D-printing in hip and pelvic surgeries: (i) 3D-printed anatomical models for planning and surgery simulation, (ii) patient-specific instruments (PSI), (iii) generation of prostheses with 3D-additive manufacturing, and (iv) custom 3D-printed prostheses. Simulation surgery using a 3D-printed bone model allows surgeons to develop better surgical approaches, test the feasibility of procedures and determine optimal location an
