Transapical concomitant transseptal transcatheter closure of a giant mitral paravalvular leak under three-dimensional printing guidance.

A mitral paravalvular leak (PVL) is a significant complication of surgical valve replacement that has a profound impact on the health and survival of patients. Transcatheter closure of PVL has emerged as a promising treatment option. We present the case of a 65-year-old patient who experienced exertional dyspnea, chest tightness, and peripheral edema (New York Heart Association functional class Ⅵ) following surgical aortic and mitral valve replacement. Echocardiography and computed tomography performed on admission revealed a giant mitral PVL (1 bundle, volume 25.0 mL, area 13.0 cm²). Due to t

Surface porous poly-ether-ether-ketone based on three-dimensional printing for load-bearing orthopedic implant.

Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) possesses excellent biocompatibility and similar elastic modulus as bones but yet suffers from poor osseointegration. In order to balance PEEK's mechanical and osseointegration properties, a novel surface porous PEEK (SP-PEEK) is successfully fabricated by fused deposition modelling three-dimensional printing (FDM 3DP) and characterized by mechanical and osteogenesis in vitro tests. Moreover, the effects of pore diameter and pore layer number on the mechanical behaviors of SP-PEEK are investigated by theoretical model and numerical simulation. Comparison among ex

Three dimensional printing of a low-cost middle-ear training model for surgical management of otosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of otosclerosis is technically challenging with studies demonstrating that outcomes are commensurate with surgical experience. Moreover, experts apply less force on the ossicular chain during prosthesis placement than their novice counterparts. Given the predicted decreasing patient pool and the rising cost of human temporal bone specimens it has become more challenging for trainees to receive adequate intraoperative or laboratory-based experience in this procedure. As such, there is a need for a low-cost training model for the procedure. Here we describe such a

Three-Dimensional Printing-based Reconstruction of a Maxillary Bone Defect in a Dog Following Tumor Removal.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has been applied extensively not only in human, but also veterinary medicine. However, the technique is still used in the clinical area for a surgical plan or education prior to surgery. Thus, we report a case of reconstruction after tumor removal surgery with the use of a 3D-printed scaffold. A 12-year-old female mixed dog had a left caudal maxillary mass. Based on computed tomography images, a defect was confirmed on the maxillary bone due to the oral mass, and a surgical plan was designed to remove the oral mass and graft the 3D printed scaffold. Customized p
