Sleep duration and all-cause mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests an association between both short and long duration of habitual sleep with adverse health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the population longitudinal evidence supports the presence of a relationship between duration of sleep and all-cause mortality, to investigate both short and long sleep duration and to obtain an estimate of the risk. METHODS: We performed a systematic search of publications using MEDLINE (1966-2009), EMBASE (from 1980), the Cochrane Library, and manual searches without language restrictions. We included studies if they were

Sensory testing of inferior alveolar nerve injuries: a review of methods used in prospective studies.

PURPOSE: The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) can be injured during trauma or surgery. So far there is no consensus for evaluating IAN injury. This study aimed to identify a testing method suitable for daily clinical practice which allows us to identify nerve injury, grade its severity, and monitor its recovery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Covering a 20-year period, prospective studies on sensory changes after mandibular procedures were reviewed regarding sensory testing methods; 75 studies on third molar removal, osteotomy, fracture, and implants were included. RESULTS: These studies reported varyi

Evaluation of heart-lung transplant recipients with prospective, serial transbronchial biopsies and pulmonary function studies.

The insidious development of obliterative bronchiolitis after heart-lung transplantation is thought to be due to rejection and possibly infection (cytomegalovirus). To evaluate further, we prospectively managed the last 16 consecutive heart-lung transplant recipients with serial transbronchial biopsies with lavage and pulmonary function studies as part of a surveillance protocol or as dictated by clinical presentation. A total of 123 transbronchial biopsies with lavage were performed, 77 for clinical indications (group I) and 46 for routine surveillance (group II). Results of 64 (83.1%) group

Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Mortality: Results From 2 Prospective Cohort Studies of US Men and Women and a Meta-Analysis of 26 Cohort Studies.

BACKGROUND: The optimal intake levels of fruit and vegetables for maintaining long-term health are uncertain. METHODS: We followed 66 719 women from the Nurses' Health Study (1984-2014) and 42 016 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2014) who were free from cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and diabetes at baseline. Diet was assessed using a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire at baseline and updated every 2 to 4 years. We also conducted a dose-response meta-analysis, including results from our 2 cohorts and 24 other prospective cohort studies. RES

The Darwin Prospective Melioidosis Study: a 30-year prospective, observational investigation.

BACKGROUND: The global distribution of melioidosis is under considerable scrutiny, with both unmasking of endemic disease in African and Pacific nations and evidence of more recent dispersal in the Americas. Because of the high incidence of disease in tropical northern Australia, The Darwin Prospective Melioidosis Study commenced in October, 1989. We present epidemiology, clinical features, outcomes, and bacterial genomics from this 30-year study, highlighting changes in the past decade. METHODS: The present study was a prospective analysis of epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory data fo

Vegetarian and vegan diets and cancer incidence: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

Several studies have suggested that vegetarian and vegan vs. non-vegetarian diets are associated with lower cancer risk overall, however, results for specific cancer sites have been less consistent. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies on vegetarian and vegan diets and cancer incidence to clarify the associations across cancer sites. PubMed and Embase databases were searched for relevant studies up to 5 July 2025. Summary relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated for the association between vegetarian and vegan diets and ca

Treatment Modalities for Aromatase Inhibitor-Associated Musculoskeletal Syndrome (AIMSS): A Scoping Review of Prospective Treatment Studies.

Aromatase inhibitors (AI's) are effective adjuvant treatments for postmenopausal patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. However, AIs are often associated with diffuse joint and muscle pain, referred to as aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal syndrome (AIMSS), the symptoms of which are associated with negative impacts and reduced adherence to AI therapy. As more interventions for AIMSS continue to be investigated, a scoping review is needed to survey and summarize the types of interventions and outcomes assessed in studies conducted to date, which may help identify are

Osteosarcopenia increases the risk of mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective observational studies.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Osteosarcopenia is a recently recognized geriatric syndrome. The association between osteosarcopenia and mortality risk is still largely underexplored. In this systematic review with meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies, we aimed to explore whether osteosarcopenia could be associated with a higher mortality risk. METHODS: Several databases were searched from the inception to 16th February 2024 for prospective cohort studies dealing with osteosarcopenia and mortality. We calculated the mortality risk in osteosarcopenia vs. controls using the most adjusted estimate ava

Child executive function and future externalizing and internalizing problems: A meta-analysis of prospective longitudinal studies.

To determine the association between executive function and later externalizing and internalizing problems, we conducted a meta-analysis of 167 studies (1098 effect sizes, total N = 66,119) that explored the longitudinal associations between executive functions in children and subsequent externalizing and internalizing problems. The results indicated that greater child executive function was prospectively associated with fewer attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, fewer conduct problems, fewer oppositional defiant disorder symptoms, less substance use, fewer broad externali

Perioperative ischaemic brain injury and plasma neurofilament light: a secondary analysis of two prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Ischaemic brain infarction can occur without acute neurological symptoms (covert strokes) or with symptoms (overt strokes), both associated with poor health outcomes. We conducted a pilot study of the incidence of preoperative and postoperative (intraoperative or postoperative) covert strokes, and explored the relationship of postoperative ischaemic brain injury to blood levels of neurofilament light, a biomarker of neuronal damage. METHODS: We analysed 101 preoperative (within 2 weeks of surgery) and 58 postoperative research MRIs on postoperative days 2-9 from two prospective co

Non-randomized studies should be considered for assessing surgical techniques in rectal prolapse: prospective cohort study.

AIM: Randomized trials comparing surgical techniques for rectal prolapse are not always feasible. We assessed whether non-randomized comparisons of those who have had surgery with those still waiting would be confounding baseline health status. METHOD: This was a prospective cohort study in seven UK hospitals. Participants were ≥ 18 years and listed for surgical interventions of equivalent intensity for rectal prolapse. They were defined as short or long waiters (≤ 18 or > 18 weeks, respectively). Time on the waiting list was compared with baseline comorbidity (Charlson comorbidity index) and
