Prostatic hyperplasia, a very common condition today, was well known in the past as cause for bladder distension. The difficulty to identify, at autopsy of natural or artificial mummies, even a normal-sized prostate is probably the result of putrefaction processes and its usually dramatic size reduction as well. We report two ancient cases of prostatic hyperplasia recently observed in natural mummies from Italy. The first case regards Pandolfo III Malatesta (1370-1427), a leading figure of the Italian Renaissance. He was a valiant soldier and horseman with a very active life style. The tomb, c

BACKGROUND: Pandolfo III Malatesta (1370-1427) was a leading figure of the Italian Renaissance. He was a valiant soldier and horseman with a very active life style. Historical sources report that he died of a fever in 1427. The tomb, containing his mummified body, has recently been discovered in Fano (Marche, Central Italy).
METHODS: After careful X-ray and videographic examination, autopsy was performed to diagnose possible pathologies. Samples of different tissues were collected and rehydrated by Sandison's method and submitted to routine histology processes. Sections of treated tissue were

Lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) have a significant impact on the lifestyle of older men. Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the most effective surgical therapy for this condition but an increasing number of patients are electing conservative medical therapy. Alpha-Adrenoceptor antagonists and 5alpha-reductase inhibitors are the 2 categories of drug therapy currently available for BPH. Use of alpha-adrenoceptor antagonists in the treatment of BPH is based on their ability to prevent the neural stimulation which induces prostate smooth

The armamentarium of minimally invasive treatment modalities for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia has increased steadily during the past decade. The energy sources used range from microwaves and radiofrequency waves to high-intensity focused ultrasound, with laser vaporization/coagulation/resection and electrosurgical techniques. The large amount of data available allow some conclusions to be drawn concerning the present role of the "gold standard" TURP among the minimally invasive procedures. Although the subjective response after TURP and other minimally invasive procedures is comp

In the past decade there has been a shift in the primary approach to therapy for BPH, from surgical intervention to pharmacotherapy. Therapies with alpha-blockers, particularly long-acting selective alpha1-adrenoreceptor antagonists, has proven effective, and hence has become a popular treatment option. In randomized controlled trials, 3 alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists -terazosin, doxazosin, and tamsulosin -have been shown to significantly improve both the mean peak urinary flow and the severity of BPH-related symptoms. There are no currently published trials comparing the clinical efficacy o

To determine the morphologic impact and safety of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) administered transrectally for tissue ablation, a total of 22 prostates were treated in vivo with transrectal HIFU prior to surgical removal. Location and size of the tissue lesions correlated well with the predefined target area and revealed sharply delineated coagulative necrosis in all cases. In a subsequent phase II clinical trial the clinical effectiveness of transrectal HIFU as a minimally invasive treatment modality for patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH; n = 50) was studi

Urodynamic examinations in patients with obstructive uropathy due to prostatic adenoma before and after prostatectomy were done over a 6-year-period (1981-1988) at the Department of Urology, Pula Medical Centre. In a comparative group of 30 healthy examinees and in 125 patients with obstructive uropathy as a result of benign prostatic hypertrophy, a maximal uroflowmetry and flow volume measurement were also performed. Control urodynamic studies were done 12 weeks after prostatectomy in 112 patients, and in 102 patients after 12 months. Preoperative and postoperative mean values of maximal urof

During a 16 year period from January 1972 to December 1988, transvesical prostatectomies were performed on 364 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia in the Department of Urology, Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital. The average operational procedure time was 116.1 minutes and the average amount of tissue resected was 38.3 grams. The most common complications were wound infections (6.8%), stress incontinence (1.92%), urethral stricture (4.12%) and impotence (0.27%). In this series, epididymitis and/or orchitis was noted in 4.3% of those who underwent vasectomies and 1.8% of those who did no

Combined uroflowmetry and external sphincter electromyography studies were done both preoperatively and postoperatively in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. In 56 patients preoperative electromyography during voiding showed silent or markedly suppressed activity in 41 patients (73.2%), while the remaining 15 patients (27.8%) revealed active electromyography. In the postoperative studies, 12 patients revealed active electromyography even after the release of obstruction. The urine flow rate following operation was not drastically improved in the active electromyography group compared

A prospective study of 5-Fu in the treatment of prostatic hyperplasia was commenced in 1981. The short term results were fair in 70% of 43 patients. Atrophy of the glandular tissue could be observed on histopathologic examination. The study showed that the larger the glandular component the better was the therapeutic effect. If abundant fibromuscular tissue was present in the gland the treatment was unsatisfactory. Abnormal anatomy of the bladder neck, represented a contraindication to medical treatment.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an age-associated urological condition defined by abnormal multiplication of both stromal and epithelial components within the prostate. Calamagrostis arundinacea (CA), a species of perennial grass native to East Asia, has been recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant biological activities. The present study examined whether CA extract could attenuate prostatic enlargement induced by testosterone propionate (TP) in rats. Methodology: To establish the experimental model, rats received subcutaneous TP injections (3 mg/kg/day) for four

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease affecting the majority of aging men; 90% of men develop histological BPH by the time they reach their eighties. BPH can lead to bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which may reduce quality of life. Many patients fail current treatment options and may progress to surgical intervention. Furthermore, diagnosis is reliant on symptom questionnaires and the cause of LUTS can be difficult to distinguish. Currently, BPH can only be definitively diagnosed through histological analysis of prostate tissue, which is not the standard of care. The

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common age-related disorder characterized by progressive prostatic enlargement and lower urinary tract symptoms, yet current medical therapies remain constrained by delayed onset, incomplete efficacy, and treatment-related adverse effects. Resveratrol (Res), a naturally occurring polyphenol, has emerged as a promising candidate for BPH intervention because its pharmacological profile aligns closely with the multifactorial biology of the disease. This review synthesizes current evidence showing that Res may counteract BPH progression through coordinated r

Lower urinary tract symptoms that significantly impair quality of life in men may result from benign prostatic hyperplasia, overactive bladder, or a combination of both conditions. The diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia, a voiding dysfunction due to outlet obstruction, can be made with a thorough history and physical examination. A validated questionnaire should be used to make an accurate initial diagnosis and to monitor treatment effect over time. Selective alpha-1 blockers are an appropriate first-line drug choice for most patients; however, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors and phosphodi

Doxazosin, a selective α1-receptor antagonist, is widely used to treat lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, its cardiovascular effects remain clinically relevant, particularly in older patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated blood pressure, heart rate, headache and vertigo during doxazosin treatment. PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang Data, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect were searched using Chinese and English terms related to doxazosin, BPH, prostate and cardiovascular outcomes. Sixteen evidence repor

OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term association between benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) while considering the potential role of BPH medications in any observed associations.
METHODS: This study used a prospective cohort design. A total of 198,399 male patients without CKD at baseline were recruited from the UK Biobank from 2006 to 2010. Cox proportional hazards models were used to analyze the relationships between BPH, its medication, and the incidence of CKD and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).
RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 13.58 years, 3710 patient

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, a prevalent condition in aging men, is characterized by the proliferation of prostatic epithelial and stromal cells, which leads to bladder outlet obstruction and the exacerbation of lower urinary tract symptoms. There is increasing evidence that chronic prostatic inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia. This review explores the complex relationship between chronic inflammation and benign prostatic hyperplasia, focusing on the underlying mechanisms, clinical implications, and current therapeutic approaches. Complicated urinary tract infection (UTI) is a symptomatic urinary infection accompanied by functional or structural abnormalities of the genitourinary tract. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a major cause of lower urinary tract obstruction in male patients, and bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) secondary to BPH can lead to UTIs in men. However, no evidence has clearly shown that UTI in the aging male population is associated with either post-void residual urine or BOO. Screening for the presence of bacteriuria is recommended prior to any procedure manipulating the urinary tract, and imagi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the mechanisms, risk factors, evaluation and current management options for iatrogenic lower urinary tract stenosis, including urethral stricture and bladder neck contracture, caused by surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
RECENT FINDINGS: The incidence of iatrogenic stenosis following endoscopic BPH surgery ranges from 0 to 9.7%. New endoscopic techniques and technologies for treating BPH do not appear to substantially mitigate this risk. However, new advances in our understanding of urethral sphincter anatomy combined with both innovative o
