Differences in Reward and Punishment Sensitivity among Adolescents with Depression Varying in Manic Symptoms.

Adolescent depression is heterogeneous. Given maturational changes in reward systems during adolescence, we examined how differences in reward sensitivity (RS) and punishment sensitivity (PS) relate to the presence of manic symptoms during depressive episodes (i.e., mixed features depression) in adolescents. Participants included 161 12-18 year-olds (104 assigned female at birth), including 124 with moderate to high levels of depression (DEPnomix) of which 54 endorsed mixed features (DEPmix), and 37 healthy controls (HC). We compared groups based on their questionnaire and behavioral measures

Individual differences in punished alcohol self-administration are unaltered by alcohol vapor exposure.

Continued alcohol use despite negative consequences is a defining feature of alcohol use disorder (AUD). It remains poorly understood whether individual variability in drinking despite negative consequences is due to inherent differences or emerges after prolonged alcohol use. The goal of the present study was to use a rat model of drinking despite negative consequences to assess individual differences in foot shock-punished alcohol self-administration prior to and following alcohol vapor exposure in male Wistar rats. After baseline operant self-administration was established, rats underwent a

Punishment-resistant alcohol intake is mediated by the nucleus accumbens shell in female rats.

Alcohol use is widespread across many societies. While most people can control their alcohol use, a vulnerable sub-population develops alcohol use disorder, characterized by continued alcohol use despite negative consequences. We used a rat model of alcohol self-administration despite negative consequences to identify brain activity associated with this addiction-like behaviour. We and others have previously shown that response-contingent punishment of alcohol self-administration with mild footshock reliably identifies two sub-populations. One group substantially decreases alcohol self-adminis

Perseveration and Shifting in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder as a Function of Uncertainty, Punishment, and Serotonergic Medication.

BACKGROUND: The nature of cognitive flexibility deficits in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which historically have been tested with probabilistic reversal learning tasks, remains elusive. Here, a novel deterministic reversal task and inclusion of unmedicated patients in the study sample illuminated the role of fixed versus uncertain rules/contingencies and of serotonergic medication. Additionally, our understanding of probabilistic reversal was enhanced through theoretical computational modeling of cognitive flexibility in OCD. METHODS: We recruited 49 patients with OCD, 21 of whom were

Does disrupting the orbitofrontal cortex alter sensitivity to punishment? A potential mechanism of compulsivity.

Abnormal orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) activity is one of the most common findings from neuroimaging studies of individuals with compulsive disorders such as substance use disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The nature of this abnormality is complex, however, with some studies reporting the OFC to be over-active in compulsive individuals relative to controls, whereas other studies report it being under-active, and a further set of studies reporting OFC abnormality in both directions within the same individuals. The OFC has been implicated in a broad range of cognitive processes such as de

Sex differences in neural responses to reward and the influences of individual reward and punishment sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Men and women show differences in sensitivity to reward and punishment, which may impact behavior in health and disease. However, the neural bases of these sex differences remain under-investigated. Here, by combining functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a variant of the Monetary Incentive Delay Task (MIDT), we examined sex differences in the neural responses to wins and losses and how individual reward and punishment sensitivity modulates these regional activities. METHODS: Thirty-sex men and 27 women participated in the fMRI study. We assessed sensitivity to punishme

Associations of Harsh Physical Punishment and Child Maltreatment in Childhood With Antisocial Behaviors in Adulthood.

IMPORTANCE: Inquiry into what childhood experiences are associated with antisocial behaviors in adulthood is necessary for prioritizing and informing efforts for effective prevention. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether harsh physical punishment in the absence of child maltreatment and child maltreatment with and without harsh physical punishment are associated with antisocial behaviors in adulthood. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional study using data on the general US population obtained from the National Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions Wave 3 from April 2012 to June 2013

Prison break: Karl Menninger's The Crime of Punishment and its reception in U.S. psychology.

In 1968, Karl Menninger, a highly visible and vocal U.S. psychiatrist, published a call to action on prison reform, The Crime of Punishment (Menninger, 1966/1968). This widely circulated book's central idea is that punishment as practiced in penal settings is an injustice amounting to a crime. At the outset, The Crime of Punishment quickly achieved national attention. Within mainstream psychology, its antipunishment message encountered a changed climate in which punishment, thought ineffective during the period 1930 through 1960, was redefined as an effective component in learning. It also met

Beliefs and ideologies linked with approval of corporal punishment: a content analysis of online comments.

This study employs a novel strategy for identifying points of resistance to education efforts aimed at reducing rates of child physical abuse and use of corporal punishment (CP). We analyzed online comments (n = 581) generated in response to media coverage of a study linking CP with increased child aggression. Most comments (71%) reflected approval of hitting children for disciplinary purposes. Reasons for this approval were rooted in beliefs linking the use of CP with positive or neutral outcomes such as: 'I was spanked and I am okay', spanking improves child behavior, spanking is more effect

Stop Saying That It Is Wrong! Psychophysiological, Cognitive, and Metacognitive Markers of Children's Sensitivity to Punishment.

Neurodevelopmental evidence suggests that children's main decision-making strategy is to avoid options likely to induce punishment. However, the cognitive and affective factors contributing to children's avoidance to high punishment frequency remain unknown. The present study explored psychophysiological, cognitive, and metacognitive processes associated with sensitivity to punishment frequency. We evaluated 54 participants (between 8 and 15 years old) with a modified Iowa Gambling Task for children (IGT-C) which included options with varying long-term profit and punishment frequencies. The Influence of Rehabilitative and Punishment Ideology on Correctional Officers' Perceptions of Informal Bases of Power.

Maintaining order is a key goal for prison managers. Much of the research on order maintenance focuses, however, on disruptions of order, even when order is more common. Examining factors related to perceptions on how officers get inmates to comply is, therefore, an important consideration. Using a survey of correctional officers from a Mid-Atlantic state, this study considers three dimensions of French and Raven's theory on the bases of power. The focus is to examine correctional orientation and compliance regarding three dimensions of power that rely on informal control and relationships. Th

What predicts injury from physical punishment? A test of the typologies of violence hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the power of child, perpetrator, and socio-economic characteristics to predict injury in cases of reported child physical abuse. The study was designed to assess the validity of the assumption that physically injurious incidents of child physical abuse are qualitatively different from those that do not result in injury, that their generative factors are distinctive, and that the quality of caregiving in these two types of incidents is different. METHOD: A weighted, nationally representative sample of 8,164 substantiated punishment abuse cases in Canada was used.

Re-evaluation of constant versus varied punishers using empirically derived consequences.

Charlop, Burgio, Iwata, and Ivancic [J. Appl. Behav. Anal. 21 (1988) 89] demonstrated that varied punishment procedures produced greater or more consistent reductions of problem behavior than a constant punishment procedure. More recently, Fisher and colleagues [Res. Dev. Disabil. 15 (1994) 133; J. Appl. Behav. Anal. 27 (1994) 447] developed a systematic methodology for predicting the efficacy of various punishment procedures. Their procedure identified reinforcers and punishers (termed "empirically derived consequences" or EDC) that, when used in combination, reduced the destructive behavior

Allocation of transplantable organs: do people want to punish patients for causing their illness?

Some people believe patients with alcoholic cirrhosis should not receive equal priority for scarce transplantable organs. This may reflect a belief that these patients (1) are personally responsible for causing their own illnesses, (2) have poor transplant prognoses, or (3) are unworthy because they have engaged in socially undesirable behavior. We explore the roles that social desirability and personal responsibility have in people's judgments about transplant allocation. We presented prospective jurors with 4 scenarios, asking them to distribute 100 transplantable organs among 2 groups of 10

Dorsal periaqueductal gray punishment, septal lesions and the mode of action of minor tranquilizers.

In order to study the role of the septo-hippocampal system and the dorsal periaqueductal gray (DPAG) substance in punished behavior and in the action of minor tranquilizers, two groups of rats were trained to lever press on a continuous reinforcement schedule of food presentation. In one group, every response was subsequently punished by foot-shock delivery; in the other, by brief electrical stimulation of the DPAG of the mesencephalon. In both groups response rats were reduced to less than 10% of pre-punishment rates, but not completely supressed. Response rates did not significantly differ b

Healthcare in a system of punishment: how clinicians experience care work within carceral settings.

BACKGROUND: The harms experienced by individuals incarcerated in prisons and jails have been well-documented; however, little is known about the experience of healthcare clinicians in their work in carceral institutions. Using qualitative methods, we interviewed 20 clinicians who deliver care in California’s prisons and jails to better understand their experiences. RESULTS: Participants described a carceral culture which impeded the delivery of care. These barriers to providing healthcare included limiting the clinicians’ ability to develop a trusting patient-clinician relationship and structu

How working memory and reinforcement learning interact when avoiding punishment and pursuing reward concurrently.

Humans learn adaptive behaviors via a durable but incremental reinforcement learning (RL) system and a fast but fleeting working memory (WM) system. Past work parsing these systems focused on reward learning alone; hence, little is known about how they interact while simultaneously learning to avoid punishment and whether arbitrating between these demands is disrupted by psychiatric symptoms. We administered a novel reward/punishment RL-WM task to an online sample oversampled for depression and anxiety symptoms (N = 298; n = 275 after quality control). Participants avoided punishment during in

Evolutionary game and simulation study of public transport under government incentive and punishment mechanism.

Public transport plays an indispensable role in the whole public transport system. This paper makes an in-depth study on how public transport can provide passengers with higher service quality while meeting the needs of passengers. In order to achieve this research goal, this paper organically incorporates the three key subjects of government supervision, public transport and passengers into the research framework. Evolutionary game theory is used to construct the corresponding research model. It has been found that the decision-making behaviours of government regulators, public transport and

Height matters: An EEG study of the relative height disadvantage promoting third-party punishment.

The study employed event-related potential (ERP), time-frequency analysis, and functional connectivity to comprehensively explore the influence of male's relative height on third-party punishment (TPP) and its underlying neural mechanism. The results found that punishment rate and transfer amount are significantly greater when the height of the third-party is lower than that of the recipient, suggesting that male's height disadvantage promotes TPP. Neural results found that the height disadvantage induced a smaller N1. The height disadvantage also evoked greater P300 amplitude, more theta powe
