Over the last decade, there was noted a large advancement of knowledge on living organisms and their products posing a potential occupational risk. Novel risk factors, often new to science, were identified, the role and significance of already known factors better comprehended, and occupational groups endangered by biological hazards more thoroughly recognized. Novel viruses and prions, emerging in different parts of the world, may pose a particular threat to health and life of health care workers, agriculture workers and veterinarians. A new coronavirus (SCoV) that evoked a rapid outbreak of

Pathogenic Eurasian hantaviruses cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), which is characterized by acute kidney injury. The clinical course shows a broad range of severity and is influenced by direct and immune-mediated effects. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a marker of systemic inflammation and predicts severity and outcome in various diseases. Therefore, we examined the role of NLR in HFRS caused by hantavirus Puumala (PUUV) and its association with disease severity and kidney injury. We detected elevated NLR levels on admission (NLRadm: median 3.82, range 1.75-7.59

Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) is endemic in Europe and can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (nephropathia epidemica). Disease features include fever, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury (AKI). This retrospective cohort study of forty PUUV patients aims to characterize associations of serum immunological, hemostatic or kidney injury markers to disease severity. While interleukin-18 (IL-18) was significantly increased in severely thrombocytopenic patients (<100 × 109 platelets/L) compared to patients with higher platelet counts, RANTES was significantly decreased in these patie

BACKGROUND: Serum ferritin is associated with disease severity in haemorrhagic fevers caused by various viruses, while iron has been implicated in the development of acute kidney injury (AKI). Puumala hantavirus causes a haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome with acute kidney injury (AKI), thrombocytopenia and increased vascular leakage. Histologically acute haemorrhagic tubulointerstitial nephritis is detected. Degrading red blood cells in the kidney are an abundant source of iron and ferritin. Free iron causes oxidative stress. We aimed to evaluate the role of iron metabolism in haemorrhagi

The bank vole (Myodes glareolus) is a common small mammal in Europe and a natural host for several important emerging zoonotic viruses, e.g. Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) that causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Hantaviruses are known to interfere with several signaling pathways in infected human cells, and HFRS is considered an immune-mediated disease. There is no in vitro-model available for infectious experiments in bank vole cells, nor tools for analyses of bank vole immune activation and responses. Consequently, it is not known if there are any differences in the regulation o

BackgroundRodent-borne viruses such as orthohantaviruses and arenaviruses cause considerable disease burden with regional and temporal differences in incidence and clinical awareness. Therefore, it is important to regularly evaluate laboratory diagnostic capabilities, e.g. by external quality assessments (EQA).AimWe wished to evaluate the performance and diagnostic capability of European expert laboratories to detect orthohantaviruses and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) and human antibody response towards orthohantaviruses.MethodsWe conducted an EQA in 2021; molecular panels consiste

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Slovenia can be caused by infection with either Dobrava (DOBV) or Puumala (PUUV) virus, but a clear difference in disease severity is observed. We hypothesized that the wide spectrum of disease observed among HFRS patients might be related to differing immune responses and viral load kinetics. To test this hypothesis we analysed sequential blood samples from 29 HFRS patients hospitalized in Slovenia. Measuring viral RNA in patient samples revealed that viraemia lasts for longer than previously believed, with DOBV or PUUV-infected patients having

BACKGROUND: Landscape attributes influence spatial variations in disease risk or incidence. We present a review of the key findings from eight case studies that we conducted in Europe and West Africa on the impact of land changes on emerging or re-emerging vector-borne diseases and/or zoonoses. The case studies concern West Nile virus transmission in Senegal, tick-borne encephalitis incidence in Latvia, sandfly abundance in the French Pyrenees, Rift Valley Fever in the Ferlo (Senegal), West Nile Fever and the risk of malaria re-emergence in the Camargue, and rodent-borne Puumala hantavirus and

Most hantaviruses are rodent-borne emerging viruses. They cause two significant human diseases, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Asia and Europe, and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome in the Americas. Very recently, several novel hantaviruses with unknown pathogenic potential have been identified in Africa and in a variety of insectivores (shrews and a mole). Because there is very limited information available on the possible impact of climate change on all of these highly dangerous pathogens, it is timely to review this aspect of their epidemiology. It can reasonably be concluded t

Among many viral hemorrhagic fevers, only hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) occurs in Croatia. HFRS is a natural focus zoonosis with sudden onset, characterized by high fever and other clinical symptoms, renal insufficiency and hemorrhages. In Croatia, HFRS is caused by two types of hantaviruses--Puumala (PUU) and Dobrava (DOB). The basic pathologic and patophysiologic disorder in HFRS is capillary damage (vasculitis). Incubation of HFRS has not been precisely determined, it is most frequently around two weeks. The disease onset is usually abrupt. At the beginning, general symptoms

BACKGROUND: Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) causes haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome characterized by thrombocytopenia, capillary leakage and acute kidney injury (AKI) with proteinuria and haematuria. Although the typical histologic lesion is acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, the amount of glomerular proteinuria predicts the severity of upcoming AKI. Here, we studied the associations of haematuria and proteinuria with the severity of emerging AKI, thrombocytopenia and markers of coagulation and fibrinolysis in PUUV infection.
METHODS: We examined 205 consecutive patients treated for serologi

BACKGROUND: Hantaan virus (HTNV), Seoul virus (SEOV) and Puumala virus (PUUV) are major serotypes of the Hantavirus, which can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). The pathophysiology of HFRS in humans is complex and the determinants associated with mortality, especially the coagulation and fibrinolysis disorders, are still not been fully elucidated. Severe patients usually manifest multiple complications except for acute kidney injury (AKI). The aim of this study was to observe the levels of peripheral blood routine, biochemical and coagulation parameters during the early stage

The Hantavirus genus comprises rodent borne, zoonotic viruses of the Bunyaviridae family that cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas. Rodent saliva contains infectious hantavirus and evidence suggests that hantavirus is also shed in human saliva, but person-to-person transmission is rare. In saliva, immunoglobulin (Ig) A is the predominant immunoglobulin class. Secretory IgA serves as an important first line of defence on epithelial surfaces and the binding of secretory IgA to pathogens can inhibit adherence

Nephropathia epidemica (NE) is a hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome caused by Puumala hantavirus. Its long-term prognosis is considered favorable. There are, however, some reports about subsequent hypertension, glomerular hyperfiltration, and proteinuria after previous hantavirus infection. Therefore, we studied 36 patients 5 and 10 years after acute NE, with 29 seronegative controls. Office blood pressure, ambulatory 24-h blood pressure (ABP), glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and proteinuria were examined. Hypertensive subjects were defined as those patients having increased ambulatory or

Pumala virus recombinant nucleocapsid protein was used for the early diagnosis of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Specific IgM in the sera of patients could be determined by the IEA technique as early as on days 2-3 from the onset of the disease. The diagnostic effectiveness of the test-system was 95% and its specificity was 98%.

BACKGROUND: Puumala virus (PUUV)-induced hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is common in many European countries. The typical renal histologic lesion is acute tubulointerstitial nephritis. We examined the type and kinetics of urine protein excretion and prognostic significance of proteinuria for the severity of acute kidney injury (AKI) in acute PUUV infection.
METHODS: The amount of dipstick albuminuria at hospital admission was analyzed in 205 patients with acute PUUV infection. Dipstick albuminuria at admission was graded into 3 categories: 0-1+, 2+, and 3+. In 70 patients, 24-h urinary

BACKGROUND: The long-term consequences of nephropathia epidemica (NE), a mild form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome caused by Puumala virus (PUUV), remain incompletely understood. Previous studies suggested possible kidney and cardiovascular complications, but large-scale, long-term data are lacking.
METHODS: In this study, we evaluated n = 156 individuals with a history of NE-associated acute kidney injury, up to 20 years after confirmed PUUV infection. Participants were followed up and underwent clinical and laboratory assessments including blood pressure measurement, kidney paramet

BACKGROUND: Nephropathia epidemica (NE), caused by Puumala virus (PUUV), is characterized by acute kidney injury (AKI) and thrombocytopenia. Cardiac involvement with electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities has been previously reported in NE; however, its prognostic value is unknown. Relative bradycardia is an important clinical sign in various infectious diseases, and previous smaller studies have described pulse-temperature deficit in patients with PUUV infection.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional survey of 471 adult patients with serologically confirmed NE. Data were collected retros

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira spp. and is considered the most widespread zoonotic disease worldwide. It mimics nephropathia epidemica in humans, a disease mainly caused by Puumala hantavirus (PUUV). Small mammals are reservoirs for Leptospira spp. and PUUV. Seewis virus (SWSV) is a shrew-borne hantavirus with unknown pathogenicity. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence for Leptospira spp. and the frequency of Leptospira-hantavirus co-infections in small mammals collected at locations with high and low incidences in humans.
