Systematic Racism, Abortion and Bias in Medicine: All Threads Woven in the Cloth of Racial Disparity for Mothers and Infants.

This note argues that decisions like that of NAACP v. Wilmington Medical Center, Inc. have been one of many contributing factors in the disparity in mortality rates of both black and American Indian/Alaska Native newborns in comparison to white newborns across the country. Part II examines the current state of the law regarding issues of discrimination, accessibility of health care, and relocation and closure of medical centers that has disproportionately affect minorities in the U.S. Part III discusses the statistics of white, black, and American Indian/Alaska Native newborn and maternal mort

Theory, Impact, and Contributing Factors Associated with Sexual Racism within Sexually and Gender Minoritized Communities: A Systematic Review.

Sexual racism, as experienced by sexually and gender-minorized (SGM) communities, is an important and increasingly visible phenomenon in the health and social sciences. Sexual racism describes a hierarchy of desirability wherein Whiteness is positioned as the most desired characteristic in an intimate partner, to which racially minoritized groups are juxtaposed, othered, and relegated to a lesser status in comparison. A systematic search was conducted across 16 scholarly databases for English-language publications related to sexual racism among SGM communities. The search and screening process

Structural and individualized racism drives racial disparities in chronic low back pain: A cross-sectional serial mediation analysis.

This cross-sectional study examined whether individualized racism, as measured by experiences of discrimination, internalized stigma of chronic pain, and perceived injustice, as well as structural racism, as measured by the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), mediates racial disparities in nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP) outcomes among non-Hispanic Blacks (NHBs) and non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs). 258 adults completed questionnaires assessing pain severity, pain interference, discrimination, internalized stigma, and perceived injustice. The mean pain severity and pain interference scores were 6

Racism and health: Examining pathways influencing health outcomes among justice-involved and nonjustice-involved Black and Latine individuals.

The pervasive nature of racism at interpersonal and structural levels remains a significant public health threat, as it contributes to adverse mental and behavioral health outcomes. The biopsychosocial model of racism underscores physiological, cognitive, and emotional mechanisms that influence health outcomes; however, less is known about the distinct mechanisms through which experiences of racism shape health outcomes among Black and Latine individuals who face cumulative disadvantage because of criminal legal system involvement. Black and Latine participants (N = 828; justice involved, n =

Association of Stress from Racism and High Depressive Symptomatology among a Community Sample of Young African American Women.

INTRODUCTION: Racism is a public health crisis in the United States disproportionately affecting African American women. The stress stemming from racism contributes to significant physical and mental health disparities, including a heightened risk of depressive symptoms. Despite African American women experiencing the highest levels of race-related stress and its associated adverse health outcomes, research exploring this association remains limited. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the impact of stress from racism on depressive symptoms among young African American women.

Structural Determinants of Health Literacy Among Formerly Incarcerated Individuals: Insights From the Survey of Racism and Public Health.

BACKGROUND: Formerly incarcerated individuals (FIIs) encounter difficulties with covering the cost of dental and medical care, adhering to medication regimens, and receiving fair treatment from health care providers. Yet, no published research has examined modifiable pathways to increase FIIs' health literacy (HL), which is essential for addressing the health needs of this vulnerable population. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to examine neighborhood characteristics (neighborhood deprivation, racial and economic polarization, and residential segregation) and public assistance program en

Intersectionality and the Association Between State-Level Structural Racism, Binge Alcohol Consumption, and Smoking Status Among Black Americans.

BACKGROUND: Structural racism is associated with alcohol and tobacco use among Black Americans. There is a need to understand how this relationship differs within varying groups of Black Americans. This study assessed the moderating roles of age, gender, and income in the association between structural racism and binge alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking status among Black Americans. METHODS: A state-level index of structural racism was merged with data from a national probability sample of 1946 Black Americans. Hierarchical linear and logistic regression models tested associations betwee

Psychological Burden of Systemic Racism-Related Distress in New York City Healthcare Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship among systemic racism, psychological symptoms (depression, anxiety, and/or post-traumatic stress disorders), and burnout in healthcare workers (HCWs). OBJECTIVE: To determine whether distress related to awareness of systemic racism contributes to psychological symptoms and/or burnout in HCWs. We explored whether this form of racism-related distress may moderate the relationship between race, ethnicity, psychological symptoms, and burnout. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from November 19, 2020, through January 11, 2021. Statist

The influence of structural racism, pandemic stress, and SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy with adverse birth outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Structural racism and pandemic-related stress from the COVID-19 pandemic may increase the risk of adverse birth outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine associations between neighborhood measures of structural racism and pandemic stress with 3 outcomes: SARS-CoV-2 infection, preterm birth, and delivering small-for-gestational-age newborns. Our secondary objective was to investigate the joint association of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and neighborhood measures with preterm birth and delivering small-for-gestational-age newborns. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed data of

Midwives' Communication Practices About Risk and Racism With Black Women During Pregnancy: "We've Got to Find a Way".

INTRODUCTION: A growing body of literature suggests that patient-provider communication in perinatal care is a key factor in addressing inequities in pregnancy outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore how a sample of midwives who provide perinatal care perceive their communication practices about racism-related risks with Black women who are pregnant during clinical encounters. METHODS: Fourteen midwives from a national mixed-methods study completed semistructured interviews about communication practices regarding pregnancy risks during prenatal care. Interviews were analyzed using

"More in solidarity": COVID-19-related racism and critical consciousness among Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

This study examined how Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) described their experiences and impacts of COVID-19-related racism, contextualized in a broader history of sociopolitical oppression. Guided by Cheng, Kim, et al. (2021) tripartite model of collective psychosocial resilience, we further hypothesized that COVID-19-related racism might be a catalyst for AANHPIs developing critical consciousness to resist racism. AANHPI adults (n = 448; Mage = 26.43) were asked how their lives were impacted by anti-Asian racism during the COVID-19 pandemic and completed sur

"You're Just Stuck in a Hole, Really": Mechanisms of Structural Racism Through Migrant Agricultural Worker Housing in Canada.

Worldwide, migrant agricultural workers face poor housing conditions and related health challenges. A growing body of research has documented the substandard housing often occupied by this largely racialized population. Yet limited health research has examined mechanisms of structural racism that determine this group's poor housing and health. Drawing on interviews with 151 migrant farmworkers in Ontario and British Columbia, Canada, we documented the housing experiences faced by migrant agricultural workers and examined the role of structural racism in determining housing and health inequitie

Responding responsively: Benefits of responsive racism-specific support for Black college students in same- and cross-race friendships.

OBJECTIVES: Black people seek racism-specific support (RSS)-social support in response to racism-from same-race (vs. cross-race) friends because they feel more understood by Black friends. The present study tested whether supportive and responsive (i.e., validating) RSS from Black or non-Black friends differentially influenced friendship dynamics and factors associated with Black support-seekers' psychological well-being (e.g., affect). METHOD: Same-race (Black/Black; ndyad = 17) and cross-race (Black/non-Black; ndyad = 29) friendship dyads (Mage = 20.25, SD = 3.26) discussed an experience of

Social workers' perspectives on anti-Black racism and parenting outcomes for incarcerated pregnant women with substance use histories.

SUMMARY: Black women who use substances face significant barriers to accessing resources and parenting their children, largely as a result of interactions with the criminal legal, child welfare, and healthcare systems. While extensive literature has demonstrated how structural racism and punitive policy approaches underpin the operation and impact of these systems, minimal attention has been paid to how social workers approach child, maternal, and family well-being when interacting with clients who use substances and have been incarcerated. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured qua

Caregiver experienced racism, acculturative stress, and political hostility predict anxiety in Latinx families residing in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Cultural stress potently predicts mental health inequities, such as anxiety, among adult and adolescent immigrants in the United States. However, less work has focused on preadolescence, a period marked by neurodevelopmental and psychosocial changes that can exacerbate anxiety symptoms. Latina girls, who exhibit heightened levels of untreated anxiety, may be at elevated risk. The present study tests whether cultural stress predicts anxiety symptoms in Latina girls and their caregivers. METHOD: The primary caregivers of 161 predominantly Mexican-identifying Latina girls (Mage = 10.7

Adverse birth outcomes and intergenerational exposure to multiple dimensions of structural racism among Black families in the U.S. South.

In cross-sectional studies from the United States, single indicators of structural racism have been associated with adverse birth outcomes. Yet little is known about multidimensional measures of structural racism and birth outcomes, or about the impact of such measurement across generations. We constructed a multidimensional measure of structural racism and linked it to a multigenerational birth outcomes dataset of Black women from South Carolina who gave birth between 1989 and 2020. Each family tree had information on grandmothers' (Generation 1, G1) and mothers' (Generation 2, G2) structural

State-Level Racial Inequity in Children's Dental Care Use in the U.S. and Association with State-Level Structural Racism.

INTRODUCTION: The aims of this study were to estimate state-level racial inequities in dental care use among children in the U.S., overall and by insurance type, and to examine relationships between inequities and state-level structural racism. METHODS: Pooled 2017-2019 data from the National Survey of Children's Health were used to estimate racial inequities in dental care use. Independent variables included state-level structural racism indicators and other factors. RESULTS: There was substantial variation in the degree and direction of inequities across states and by insurance type. Inequ
