Staff exposure to ionizing radiation in a major trauma centre.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present paper was to determine the safety of staff members with regard to ionizing radiation in a major trauma centre in a 19-month period. METHODS AND RESULTS: A group of five doctors, five nurses and a trauma orderly wore personal radiation monitors under lead aprons while at work. The highest individual cumulative result after 586 days was 0.18 mSv for a nurse. If the exposure rate to ionizing radiation was constant, this would be equivalent to 0.114 mSv per year. Therefore the results are well below the recommended occupational dose limit of 20 mSv per year.

Radiation safety in fluoroscopy.

Fluoroscopy is an important diagnostic and interventional imaging tool that enables clinicians to view dynamic, real-time images of anatomy and function unmatched by other imaging techniques. However, operators must take into account many factors that impact the amount of radiation delivered, particularly over the course of a lengthy interventional procedure. After completing this review, readers will: Understand basic concepts of radiobiology and fluoroscopy systems. Know the typical doses and dose calculations for patients and fluoroscopic personnel. Recognize the pathology of biological eff

A compact, platform-agnostic system for underwater radioactivity detection.

This work presents the development and evaluation of a compact underwater radioactivity detection system, named Mini KATERINA, designed to be integrated in platform-agnostic mobile robotic vehicles operating in controlled aquatic environments to identify radioactive sources. It employs a 2″ × 2″ NaI(Tl) scintillation crystal coupled to a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), achieving reduced size, weight, and power consumption. The system was characterized in laboratory conditions using calibrated reference point sources and dedicated simulants (volume sources), enabling training and validation for

Polarization-Induced Multimode Terahertz Metamaterial for High-Sensitivity and Label-free Drug Monitoring.

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) requires analytical technologies with high sensitivity, accuracy, and efficiency. Terahertz (THz) metamaterials offer strong THz electromagnetic field-analyte interactions and enable label-free detection with minimal sample consumption. However, most conventional designs rely on a single mode resonance (either single peak or multiple peaks), which limits modal diversity and thus causes in peak instability, sensitivity fluctuations, and a lack of real-time error validation. In this work, we propose a polarization-induced multimode THz metamaterial sensor that e

Review of particle deposition to and removal from clothing, skin, and hair after a radioactive airborne dispersal event.

Explosive Radiological Dispersal Devices (RDD) - aka dirty bombs - are seen as a credible method to carry out a radiological terror attack. After exploding a radioactive source, the radionuclide-laden plume will be blown downwind of ground zero, with particles falling out and potentially depositing on people caught in and under the cloud. Some of these people may not show any sign of radiation sickness and therefore not realize they have been contaminated and may take the radioactive particulate with them on their daily activities, thus spreading the radioactive particulate outside the initial

A Closer Look at the Thresholds of Thermal Damage: Workshop Report by an ICNIRP Task Group.

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection issued guidelines in 1998 for limiting public and occupational exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (100 kHz to 300 GHz). As part of the process of updating this advice, a 2-d workshop titled "A closer look at the thresholds of thermal damage" was held from 26-28 May 2015 in Istanbul to re-examine the thermal basis of the guidelines and to provide further information on heat-related effects and thresholds of thermal damage. Overall, the workshop provided much useful information relevant to revision of the guidelines

A practical method to evaluate radiofrequency exposure of mast workers.

Assessment of occupational exposure to radiofrequency (RF) fields in telecommunication transmitter masts is a challenging task. For conventional field strength measurements using manually operated instruments, it is difficult to document the locations of measurements while climbing up a mast. Logging RF dosemeters worn by the workers, on the other hand, do not give any information about the location of the exposure. In this study, a practical method was developed and applied to assess mast workers' exposure to RF fields and the corresponding location. This method uses a logging dosemeter for p

BACKGROUND: Screening for radioactive material at borders may become more widely introduced in order to prevent illegal transport. All the alarms at Vienna airport so far have been due to recent applications of radionuclides for medical reasons. METHODS: We report a patient who unexpectedly experienced this problem after undergoing radioiodine therapy. RESULTS: We propose to inform patients routinely about this issue and to provide them with a certificate containing details of the administered radionuclide. CONCLUSION: This could reduce problems for authorities, patients and institutions. T

Natural radioactivity in soil and concomitant hazards in the BSCIC Industrial Area, Jhenaidah, Bangladesh: a pioneering study.

Soil serves as both a repository and a pathway for natural radioactivity, influencing human exposure through the transfer of radionuclides into the food-chain and atmosphere. Industrial activities can further disrupt this distribution by introducing contaminants, potentially leading to environmental accumulation. This pioneering study investigates the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) and assesses radiological hazards in soil from the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Industrial Area in Jhenaidah, Bangladesh. Thirty soil samp

RF-EMF electromagnetic environment IN the West Bank, Palestine.

With the increase in the distribution of sources of electromagnetic fields in the environment, public exposure to non-ionizing radiation emitted from these sources will increase and change with time. This work aims at the evaluation of public exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in the West Bank and compares this exposure with previous studies with a time interval difference of 11 years. Measurements of exposure were conducted in the outdoor environment in 149 locations using tri-axial E-field frequency-selective personal exposure meter EME SPY 140 enabling measurements of electri

Radon levels in caves in Primorsko-goranska County, Croatia and assessment of the effective dose for visitors and tourist guides.

Radon is a natural source of radiation and one of the main causes of lung cancer. Since radon is a product of radium decay, it leaks from soil and rock and often accumulates in enclosed spaces. Caves are known for high radon concentrations, especially under certain meteorological conditions when the air circulation in the cave is weak. In this study, the results of radon monitoring in two caves in Croatia, Šparožna Cave and Biserujka Cave, are presented. Radon concentrations were measured continuously in each cave for 14 months. The monthly average concentrations showed a clear seasonal patter

Risk assessment of uranium in groundwater surrounding the Greater Noida industrial area, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Groundwater quality is an important concern for public health, particularly with respect to uranium contamination, which may contribute to radiation dose and chemical toxicity when used for drinking. An analysis of radiation levels in groundwater has been undertaken around Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, using the LED Fluorimetry Technique. The concentration of uranium (U-238) in water samples obtained from submersible pumps, tube wells, and hand pumps in Noida is determined. The uranium concentration, averaging 10.62 μg L-1, along with the annual effective dose of 1.77 μSv y-1, falls within the

External background ionizing radiation and childhood cancer: Update of a nationwide cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation is known to cause cancer. Exposure during childhood is associated with a greater excess relative risk for leukemia and tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) than exposure in later life. Cancer risks associated with low-dose exposure (<100 mSv) are uncertain. We previously investigated the association between the incidence of childhood cancer and levels of exposure to external background radiation from terrestrial gamma and cosmic rays in Switzerland using data from a nationwide census-based cohort study. Here, we provide an update o

From a policy perspective: what is at stake?

This paper does not necessarily reflect the views of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. What is at stake? It was one of the most frequently asked questions in a series of fora with concerned parties on the rehabilitation of living conditions in the aftermath of the accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. It was obvious that radioactive contamination was the source of the problem, and people were at a loss over how to cope with the situation. Various measures were taken under such circumstances, including detailed radiation monitoring, a decontamination programme

Radiation safety and protection in U.S. dental hygiene programs.

A survey of radiation safety and protection measures used by programs teaching dental hygiene indicated some areas for concern. No barriers or radiation shieldings were used between operator and patient in four programs. Radiation monitoring devices were not worn by faculty operators in 16% of the programs. Fewer than half of the programs used thyroid shields for patients on a routine basis. Insufficient filtration for the kilovolt peak employed was used by 14% of the programs, and for 19% more the filtration was unknown or unspecified. Three programs used closed cones. Rectangular collimation
