Institutional Contributions to the Radiology Literature: A Subspecialty Assessment.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Academic radiologists concentrate scholarly activity within defined subspecialties, producing heterogeneous institutional research profiles. The relationship between institutional bibliometric performance and National Institutes of Health (NIH) radiology funding across subspecialties is incompletely characterized. We evaluated institutional scholarly output across U.S. radiology subspecialties and its association with NIH funding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed U.S. academic radiology faculty using Scopus data (March 2026). Faculty were id

Are UK radiologists satisfied with the training and support received in suspected child abuse?

AIM: To determine current practice and perceptions of the adequacy of training and support received for the reporting of skeletal surveys in suspected physical child abuse. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A list of telephone numbers of UK hospitals with a radiology department was obtained from the Royal College of Radiologists. One hundred hospitals were then randomly selected for inclusion in the survey. An 18-item questionnaire was successfully administered to consultant radiologists from 84 departments. RESULTS: Sixty-one percent of departments had a named radiologist to report their skeletal surv

A detailed audit of reimbursement for abdominal CT in an academic practice.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Declining fee schedules, decreasing operating margins, and increasingly stringent compliance regulations create a need for intense scrutiny and optimization of a radiology organization's billing and collection procedures. The authors' goal was to analyze the effectiveness of departmental professional billing procedures, identify controllable factors, and intervene when they could be improved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A detailed audit of professional claims and payments was performed for all patients who underwent abdominal-pelvic computed tomography (CT) during July 19

Communication of mammography results to women by radiologists: attitudes of referring health care providers.

PURPOSE: To understand the attitudes of referring physicians about the communication of mammography results directly to women by radiologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires were mailed to 87 health care providers (85 physicians and two nurse practitioners) who regularly refer women to the authors' mammographic facility. Responses were answered by assigning a score of 1-5 (strongly agree to strongly disagree). RESULTS: Seventy-one (82%) referring providers responded to the survey. For normal results, 85% agreed that radiologists should report directly to women; for abnormal results, 5

Clinician's guide to imaging and pathologic findings in benign breast disease.

The discussion of abnormal results of breast imaging and abnormal pathologic findings can be challenging for health care professionals and often is stressful for patients. Although most imaging findings and biopsy results are negative and do not infer a substantial increase in breast cancer risk, the subsequent conversation between the patient and her practitioner is more effective and informative with a thorough review of the pathologic results and an appreciation of the importance of radiologic-histologic concordance. This article provides insight into and understanding of breast imaging and

Safety and Efficacy of the Intra-articular Injection of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for the Treatment of Osteoarthritic Knee: A 5-Year Follow-up Study.

Although successful short-term results of the intra-articular injection of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the conservative treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA) have been reported, the mid-term results of the injection of adipose-derived (AD) MSCs remains unknown. We assessed the mid-term safety and efficacy of the intra-articular injection of ADMSCs in patients with knee OA. Eleven patients with knee OA were prospectively enrolled and underwent serial evaluations during a 5-year follow-up of a single intra-articular injection of autologous high-dose (1.0 × 108) ADMSCs. The safety profiles

Breast Implant-associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma: Review and Multiparametric Imaging Paradigms.

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a new provisional category in the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of lymphoid neoplasms, and its incidence is rising owing to increasing recognition of this complication of breast implant insertion. At a median of 10 years after implant insertion, the typical presenting features are sudden-onset breast swelling secondary to peri-implant effusion and less frequently mass-forming disease. Histologic features comprise pleomorphic cells expressing CD30 and negative anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) receptor,

Bridging TG-116 and TG-232: A retrospective multi-vendor evaluation of deviation index re-centering and process control in digital radiography.

BACKGROUND: The deviation index (DI) is a vendor-neutral indicator of detector exposure relative to the configured target exposure index (TEI). Because TEI is a protocol value rather than a calibrated physical quantity, poorly aligned TEI settings can create systematic DI offsets, obscure protocol problems, and prevent meaningful statistical process control. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective multi-vendor study evaluated whether routine DICOM metadata can identify biased DI distributions, separate fixed TEI-setting offsets from protocol-adherence variation, estimate candidate TEI updates, and supp

Breaking Bad News in Ultrasound: Perspectives From Radiologists and Radiology Residents From a Developing Nation.

OBJECTIVES: Delivering bad or unexpected news is a challenging and potentially distressing task for radiologists. In developing nations, growing health literacy will likely drive more patients to be more interested in learning the details of their diagnosis. This study aimed to provide foundational insight into Ethiopian radiologists' and radiology residents' preferences and associated factors for breaking bad news during ultrasound examinations. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide online survey study among practicing radiologists and clinical radiology residents across 6 residency programs, w

Assessment of mammographic film processor performance in a hospital and mobile screening unit.

In contrast to the majority of mammographic breast screening programmes, film processing at this centre occurs on site in both hospital and mobile trailer units. Initial (1989) quality control (QC) sensitometric tests revealed a large variation in film processor performance in the mobile unit. The clinical significance of these variations was assessed and acceptance limits for processor performance determined. Abnormal mammograms were used as reference material and copied using high definition 35 mm film over a range of exposure settings. The copies were than matched with QC film density varia

Role of non-medical staff in screening for breast cancer.

In a feasibility study of mass population screening for breast cancer by clinical examination and mammography the ability of non-medical staff (nurses and radiographers) to act as primary screeners was compared with that of medical staff (surgeons and radiologists). In 240 women with cancer the rate of detection of the disease by the non-medical staff was comparable to that of the medical staff, although the non-medical staff detected more cancers by mammography alone than did the medical staff. The rate of detection by surgeons and particularly nurses was lower in women without symptoms than

Renal oncocytoma remains a diagnostic dilemma: imaging heterogeneity and potential overtreatment in a retrospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Renal oncocytoma (RO) is a benign renal neoplasm that frequently mimics renal cell carcinoma (RCC) on imaging studies, resulting in considerable diagnostic uncertainty and challenges in clinical management. This study aims to characterize the imaging heterogeneity of RO and describe preoperative radiologic recognition and surgical management patterns in a retrospective cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 62 patients with pathologically confirmed RO who underwent surgical treatment at a tertiary referral center between January 2020 and June 2025. Clinical characteristics,

A Retrospective Cohort Study of Optimal Contrast for Successful Intussusception Reduction: Institutional Practices Matter.

BACKGROUND: The first-line treatment for intussusception is radiologic reduction with either air-contrast enema (AE) or liquid-contrast enema (LE). The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between self-reported institutional AE or LE intussusception reduction preferences and rates of operative intervention and bowel resection. METHODS: Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) hospitals were contacted to assess institutional enema practices for intussusception. A retrospective study using 2009-2018 PHIS data was conducted for patients aged 0-5 y to evaluate outcomes. Chi-square

Radiological changes on CT after stereotactic body radiation therapy to non-spine bone metastases: a descriptive series.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has become increasingly used for the management of non-spine bone metastases. Few studies have examined the radiological changes in bone metastases after treatment with SBRT and there is no consensus about what constitutes radiologic response to therapy. This article describes various changes on CT after SBRT to non-spine bone metastases in eight selected cases. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted for patients treated with SBRT to non-spine bone metastases between November 2011 and April 2014 at Sunnybrook Healt

Nitrous Oxide Abuse and Vitamin B12 Action in a 20-Year-Old Woman: A Case Report.

Herein, we report a case of a 20-year-old (ethnicity not reported) woman with a history of nitrous oxide abuse and clinical symptoms consistent with spinal cord subacute combined degeneration with associated low serum concentrations of vitamin B12, elevated methylmalonic acid levels, and radiologic evidence of demyelination of the dorsal region of the spinal column. The health of the patient improved dramatically with B12 supplementation. In this case, we discuss the interaction of nitrous oxide with the enzymatic pathways involved in the biochemistry of vitamin B12.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis-presentation as acute renal failure in a child with a solitary kidney.

A 4-year-old girl, who had been in perfect health, presented with the acute onset of renal failure and abdominal mass. Investigations revealed a solitary left kidney which on histology had the typical features of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis. The child had no previous history suggestive of chronic renal disease and had no radiologic evidence of renal osteodystrophy. She had no improvement in renal function and has gone on to hemodialysis and transplantation. The unique mode of presentation and the unusual features of this case are discussed.
