Kinetics and mechanism of radium-isotopes dissolution in TENORM scale waste associated with petroleum production using certain organic carbon source: lactic acid solution-case study.

The present study is conducted to explore the dissolution as inferred from the kinetic mechanism for radium-isotopes (228Ra, 226Ra, and 224Ra) in the TENORM scale waste deposited in oilfield pipes and equipment, Gulf of Suez, Egypt. The main efficiency factors for Ra2+-compound dissolution by lactic acid (LA) solution, e.g., reactive organic carbon (i.e., electron-donor source), have been investigated, and optimum chemical conditions have been determined. The obtained data were also employed to predict the leaching kinetics and mechanism of the Ra2+-isotopes removal by three shrinking core mod

Executive Summary of the American Radium Society Appropriate Use Criteria for Selective Use of Pelvic Radiation Therapy in Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer: A Consensus Statement.

Pelvic radiotherapy is commonly incorporated in the treatment of locally-advanced rectal cancer to reduce the risk of locoregional recurrence, but can be associated with substantial acute toxicity and long-term morbidity. However, treatment may be personalized for selective use of radiotherapy in a subset of patients identified to be at low to intermediate risk of locoregional recurrence following resection. This multi-specialty-led committee included gastrointestinal radiation and medical oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, and colorectal surgery. Using the Population, Intervention, Compar

Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for the Management of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in a Central/Ultra-Central Location: Guidelines from the American Radium Society.

INTRODUCTION: Definitive radiation therapy is considered standard therapy for medically inoperable early-stage NSCLC. Nevertheless, for patients with tumors located near structures such as the proximal tracheobronchial tree, esophagus, heart, spinal cord, and brachial plexus, the optimal management regimen is controversial. The objective was to develop expert multidisciplinary consensus guidelines on managing medically inoperable NSCLC located in a central or ultracentral location relative to critical organs at risk. METHODS: Case variants regarding centrally and ultracentrally located lung t

Influence of group II metals on Radium-226 concentration ratios in the native green plum (Buchanania obovata) from the Alligator Rivers Region, Northern Territory, Australia.

In this study, uptake of Ra from soil, and the influence of group II metals on Ra uptake, into the stones and edible flesh of the fruit of the wild green plum, Buchanania obovata, was investigated. Selective extraction of the exchangeable fraction of the soil samples was undertaken but was not shown to more reliably predict Ra uptake than total soil Ra activity concentration. Comparison of the group II metal to Ca ratios (i.e. Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, Ra/Ca) in the flesh with exchangeable Ca shows that Ca outcompetes group II metals for root uptake and that the uptake pathway discriminated against group

Fracture risk and survival outcomes of radium-223 therapy for bone metastases in mCRPC and the modulatory role of bone-protective therapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) frequently involves the skeleton. While Radium-223 (Ra-223) alleviates symptomatic bone lesions, its effect on overall survival (OS) and fracture risk is debated. Bone-protective agents (BPAs) may play a critical modulatory role. This study systematically examined how Ra-223 influences OS and fracture risk and the effect of concomitant BPA use. METHODS: As per Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were retrieved for rand

Decrease in Fracture Rate with Mandatory Bone-protecting Agents in the EORTC 1333/PEACE-3 Trial Comparing Radium-223 Combined with Enzalutamide Versus Enzalutamide Alone: A Safety Analysis.

Bone health is central to the management of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). International guidelines recommend giving a bone-protecting agent (BPA) to patients with mCRPC and bone metastases. However, the data supporting these recommendations were generated before androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs) were available. Here we publish for the first time fracture rates from an interim safety analysis of the international prospective phase 3 PEACE-3 trial comparing radium-223 (223Ra) combined with enzalutamide for first-line mCPRC to enzalutamide alone

Delayed Survival Benefit of Enzalutamide Plus Radium-223 in Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer: A Time-Dependent Analysis of Reconstructed Individual Patient Data From the PEACE-3 Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The PEACE-3 trial demonstrated overall survival benefit for enzalutamide plus radium-223 versus enzalutamide alone in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), but survival curves showed initial crossing followed by progressive separation, indicating non-proportional hazards. We aimed to characterize the time-dependent treatment effects through comprehensive analysis. METHODS: Individual patient datas (IPD) were reconstructed from published Kaplan-Meier curves of the PEACE-3 trial. Time-dependent treatment effects were evaluated by restricted mean surv

Survival outcomes for men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) with and without homologous recombination deficiencies (HRD) treated with radium 223: Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PMCC) experience.

BACKGROUND: Radium-223 (223Ra) targets bone metastases in metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and induces double-strand DNA breaks. We hypothesized that patients with homologous recombination deficiencies (HRD) may exhibit heightened sensitivity to 223Ra, resulting in improved survival outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective analysis was performed in men with mCRPC and bone metastases, with and without HRD, treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and 223Ra at the PMCC. Demographics, disease characteristics, and/or somatic DNA sequencing data were collected. RESULTS:

Three Synchronous Primary Extranodal Mantle Cell Lymphomas Involving Torus Tubarius, Posterior Nasopharynx, and Base of the Tongue 65 Years After Treatment of Chronic Sinusitis with Nasopharyngeal Radium Irradiation.

BACKGROUND Radiation, specifically ionizing radiation, causes broad-spectrum gene damage, including double-strand DNA breaks, single DNA strand breaks, cross links, and individual base lesions, thus causing chromosomal translocations, deletions, point mutations, and, consequently, various types of cancer. Radiation also causes genomic instability in cells, which enhances the rate of mutations in the descendants of the irradiated cell after many generations of normal replications. CASE REPORT We report the first case of mantle cell lymphoma of the torus tubarius, and the first CD10-positive man
