A case of Subconjunctival Filariasis in Abuja,Nigeria.

The report presents a case of subconjunctival filariasis in a 20-year-old female student who schools in Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, a known loa loa endemic region in Nigeria, and resident in Abuja. The patient presented on the 20th of February 2020, with a history of foreign body sensation and itching on two occasions within a 6-month period and had video evidence of a worm in her left eye. The worm was however not visualized in the clinic. She was placed on tabs Albendazole 20mg twice daily for 21 days and has not felt or seen the worm since she completed the medications. Subconjunctival filarias

[Exanthematous diseases and the first epidemic of dengue to occur in Manaus, Amazonas State, Brazil, during 1998-1999].

In 1998, the FMT/IMT-AM foundation implemented the surveillance system to diagnose acute undifferentiated febrile syndromes, with the objective of active and passive surveillance in Brazilian western Amazonian rainforest to identify and diagnose the etiologic agents of acute fever. The diagnoses were performed using serological tests to detect IgM antibodies by ELISA (Enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay) CDC/OPAS or using commercial kits. A total of 8,557 serum samples obtained from patients with clinical suspicion of dengue virus were analyzed. ELISA positive reaction to dengue virus was presen

Environmental factors associated with the distribution of Loa loa vectors Chrysops spp. in Central and West Africa: seeing the forest for the trees.

BACKGROUND: Loiasis is caused by the filarial parasite Loa loa, which is widespread through Central and West Africa and largely confined the tropical equatorial rainforests. The tabanid flies Chrysops silacea and Chrysops dimidiata are the main vectors driving transmission. This study aimed to better define the spatial distribution and ecological niche of the two vectors to help define spatial-temporal risk and target appropriate, timely intervention strategies for filariasis control and elimination programmes. METHODS: Chrysops spp. distributions were determined by collating information from

Monkeypox: An international epidemic.

Human monkeypox (MPX) is a viral zoonosis caused by the Monkeypox virus. For decades outbreaks exclusively occurred in the tropical rainforests of Africa, with a few imported cases and very limited human-to-human transmission outside Africa. Nevertheless, in the last years sustained outbreaks have emerged, peaking at 4600 cases in 2020 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since May 2022, an international epidemic originated at 2 events in Spain and Belgium led to sustained human-to-human transmission across multiple continents, mostly in males having sex with males subjects. We review here cli

Situation analysis of parasitological and entomological indices of onchocerciasis transmission in three drainage basins of the rain forest of South West Cameroon after a decade of ivermectin treatment.

BACKGROUND: Community-Directed Treatment with Ivermectin (CDTI) is the main strategy adopted by the African Programme for Onchocerciasis control (APOC). Recent reports from onchocerciasis endemic areas of savannah zones have demonstrated the feasibility of disease elimination through CDTI. Such information is lacking in rain forest zones. In this study, we investigated the parasitological and entomological indices of onchocerciasis transmission in three drainage basins in the rain forest area of Cameroon [after over a decade of CDTI]. River basins differed in terms of river number and their fl

Outbreak of toxoplasmosis with pulmonary involvement in immunocompetent military population.

Toxoplasmosis is a common zoonotic infection with various transmission mechanisms and wide distribution worldwide. Its probability of causing disease is related to alterations in the immune system as well as the parasite’s virulence. This study presents four cases of patients from rainforest areas in Colombia who did not have any known immunosuppression but do have a diagnosis of toxoplasmosis with pulmonary involvement, confirmed by serology. One of them also developed hypoxemic ventilatory failure and myocarditis. This outbreak of toxoplasmosis occurred in military personnel after coming int

Novel Species of Brucella Causing Human Brucellosis, French Guiana.

Human brucellosis is a zoonoses caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella. Infection results in subacute or chronic debilitating disease with nonspecific clinical manifestations and is often associated with consuming unpasteurized dairy products. We report 2 cases of brucellosis in male patients who were hospitalized in distinct towns of French Guiana, an overseas territory of France located on the northeastern shore of South America. Both men were citizens of Brazil working as clandestine goldminers in the deep Amazonian rainforest. Characterization of the 2 bacterial isolates revealed that th

[Ocular pathology in the rain forest (Cameroon)].

In June 1988, a survey including 1,076 persons was carried out in the rural areas of the Littoral Province to study the distribution of eye diseases and from there determine the needs of the rural population with respect to eye care. The most frequent ophthalmological problems, apart from refraction errors, were found to be onchocerciasis and cataract. Our study shows that onchocerciasis found in the rainforest of Littoral province causes blindness as much as that found in the savannah: it was the principal cause of bilateral blindness (66.4%) in the study. Knowing that about 200,000 onchocerc

Molecular mechanisms underlying intraspecific variation in snake venom.

UNLABELLED: Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying snake venom variability provides important clues for understanding how the biological functions of this powerful toxic arsenal evolve. We analyzed in detail individual transcripts and venom protein isoforms produced by five specimens of a venomous snake (Bothrops atrox) from two nearby but genetically distinct populations from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest which show functional similarities in venom properties. Individual variation was observed among the venoms of these specimens, but the overall abundance of each general toxin fami

[Timely diagnosis of disseminated paracoccidioidomycosis in an immunocompetent adult].

Paracoccidioidomycosis is endemic in subtropical rainforests of Latin America. Acute/subacute presentations involve an aggressive dissemination throughout the lymphatic system, while chronic forms (more frequent) arise as differential diagnosis for other conditions involving lung, oropharynx, skin, and eventually the brain. We present the case of a man referred for evaluation and treatment of a possible lung tumor with brain metastasis. The finding of multibudded yeasts and the microbiological isolation of a dimorphic fungus identified as Paracoccidioides sp. from a brain biopsy prompted a car

Benign breast tumours in an African population.

A detailed prospective clinical study of 238 women presenting with benign breast swellings in the South Eastern equatorial rainforest of Nigeria clearly shows that 94% of lesions were due to two disorders, fibroadenomas and bacterial infections, and that they affected mostly young women in the peak of their reproductive life. Fibroadenoma which accounted for disease in no less than 69% of the women was multiple in 8%, bilateral in 11%, and was considered giant in size in 5% of the cases; by contrast, fibroadenosis was rare, accounting for swellings in only eight patients. Bacterial infections,

Molecular confirmation of Rickettsia parkeri in humans from Southern Mexico.

Human tick-borne rickettsioses are caused by Rickettsia africae, Rickettsia massiliae, Rickettsia parkeri, Rickettsia philipi and Rickettsia rickettsii in the American continent. Rickettsia parkeri represents the second most important agent of eschar-associated spotted fever throughout the American continent. In Mexico, the presence of three strains of this bacterium (Black Gap, Maculatum and Atlantic Rainforest) has recently been reported in four species of ticks from five states (Baja California, Campeche, Sonora, Tabasco and Veracruz) and rickettsaemia was demonstrated in a dog from the sta

Exploring the influence of deforestation on dengue fever incidence in the Brazilian Amazonas state.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue fever is the most prevalent arboviral disease in the Brazilian Amazon and places a major health, social and economic burden on the region. Its association with deforestation is largely unknown, yet the clearing of tropical rainforests has been linked to the emergence of several infectious diseases, including yellow fever and malaria. This study aimed to explore potential drivers of dengue emergence in the Brazilian Amazon with a focus on deforestation. METHODS: An ecological study design using municipality-level secondary data from the Amazonas state between 2007 and 2017

Malaria transmission in landscapes with varying deforestation levels and timelines in the Amazon: a longitudinal spatiotemporal study.

The relationship between deforestation and malaria is a spatiotemporal process of variation in Plasmodium incidence in human-dominated Amazonian rural environments. The present study aimed to assess the underlying mechanisms of malarial exposure risk at a fine scale in 5-km2 sites across the Brazilian Amazon, using field-collected data with a longitudinal spatiotemporally structured approach. Anopheline mosquitoes were sampled from 80 sites to investigate the Plasmodium infection rate in mosquito communities and to estimate the malaria exposure risk in rural landscapes. The remaining amount of

Vaccines for Mpox - An Unmet Global Need.

In 1970, the first case of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) was documented in an infant in Equateur Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).1 Infections with clade I monkeypox virus (MPXV) are endemic in the rainforest regions of central Africa and result from both zoonotic and human-to-human transmission. The cessation of smallpox vaccination in 1980 because of the eradication of smallpox has led to an increase in the number of individuals who are orthopox immune naïve and is felt to be responsible for a recent increase in mpox cases in the DRC. Rare cutaneous myiasis of the face due to Lund's fly (Cordylobia rodhaini) in a British traveller returning from Uganda.

We present a rare cause for cutaneous furuncular myiasis in a 55-year-old British traveller returning from Uganda. Initially presenting with what appeared to be a cellulitic furuncle on her forehead, she returned to the emergency department 3 days later with extensive preseptal periorbital swelling and pain. Occlusive treatment with petroleum jelly was applied and one larva manually extracted and sent to London School of Tropical Medicine for examination. It was identified as Lund's Fly (Cordylobia rodhaini), a rare species from the rainforests of Africa with only one other case reported in th
