Ranula is a cyst-like growth that occurs in the oral cavity beneath the tongue. It consists of saliva from a ruptured salivary gland or duct. Rather than just flowing directly from the glands into the oral cavity, saliva permeates the nearby connective tissues and creates a bubble. A ranula could indeed appear at any time span in a person's life for inexplicable reasons. A trauma such as an oral operation, a facial blow or nibbling the lower lip may possibly start one. The following is a case study of an early childhood boy who reported with a swelling in the floor of the mouth with unknown ae

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided-fine-needle aspiration drainage (US-FNAD) and US-percutaneous ethanol injection (US-PEI) have been widely used in the management of benign neck cysts. However, the long-term results of US-FNAD and US-PEI are not well elucidated.
METHODS: We retrospectively collated patients under neck US examinations from March 2007 to December 2017 and investigated the recurrence after US-FNAD and US-PEI. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to assess significant risk factors for recurrence after US-FNAD.
RESULTS: A total of 1075 patients were recruited

Mucoceles originating from the submandibular gland are extremely rare. A review of the English literature resulted in identification of only 5 such cases. We have diagnosed and treated 2 submandibular mucoceles. Both lesions were removed in continuity with the submandibular and sublingual glands. No complications and no recurrences have occurred to date. The diagnosis of these lesions is complicated because of the lack of specific clinical diagnostic criteria and the similarity between submandibular mucoceles and plunging or cervical ranulas. Computerized tomography and specifically the presen

Dermoid cysts are the least commonly occurring developmental cysts in the oral and maxillofacial region. They may be congenital or acquired and are seen as asymptomatic swellings that are slow and progressive. It is very difficult to differentiate plunging ranulas from plunging dermoid cysts as both of them have very similar clinical features. However, since both entities have different treatment strategies, it is important to differentiate one from the other. A 57-year-old male patient reported to the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology with a large swelling in the submental region. To

This case report describes an acinic cell carcinoma found by a recurrence of a ranula in the sublingual gland. A 42-year-old male was admitted to the hospital of the Tokyo Dental College with a swelling in his right oral floor but without pain. The lesion was treated by windowing the same day under the diagnosis of a ranula, but the swelling appeared again at the same area eight months after the first operation. A resection was performed, and the specimen was sent to the clinical laboratory for pathological diagnosis. Proliferating serous cells were seen in part of the wall of an exudative muc

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a type of B-cell lineage lymphoma that can affect the head and neck region. This report presents a rare case of an extra-nodal marginal zone B-cell MALT lymphoma of a sublingual gland, diagnosed in an 18-year-old male patient. The patient had a history of ranula surgical removal on the right side of the mouth. One year after surgery, the patient presented with complaints of swelling of the left parotid gland, with no significant changes found during the examination and a self-resolving outcome. Subsequently, two years later, the patient bega

Submandibular gland mucoceles, which are very rare cystic lesions, make differentiation from other cystic neck masses such as plunging ranula and cystic lymphatic malformation difficult. The authors report a rare huge submandibular gland mucocele with diagnostic difficulties. A 39-year-old woman with painless swelling in the left submandibular region underwent OK-432 injection therapy with a diagnosis of plunging ranula at another hospital. However, she was referred to our department for recurrent swelling. Computed tomography showed a well-circumscribed, multilocular, low-density lesion in th

AIM: This study aimed to describe the diagnosis and treatment of various surgical salivary affections in buffaloes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 135 buffaloes examined at Dakahlia Governorate between 2011 and 2022 suffering from various surgical salivary affections. The recorded surgical affections had salivary fistula (n = 44), ectasia of Stenson's duct (n = 11), ranula/mucocele (n = 46), and cervical sialocele (n = 34). The buffaloes were sedated using an intramuscular injection of xylazine (0.05 mg/kg) and local infiltration analgesia of lidocaine for specific surgical interv

There are several lesions which can present as a cyst or pseudocyst of the floor of the mouth with submental repercussion. The aim of this paper is to review the diagnosis methods which can help us to differentiate these lesions such as the surgical peculiarities of every tumour. We are reporting two cases of cystic/pseudocystic lesions of the floor of the mouth with submental repercussion. Both of them were epidermoid cysts. Ranulas, lipomas and lymphangiomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Imaging diagnosis, fine needle aspiration and adequate treatment in all of the tumo

The cause of a swelling in the floor of the mouth will in most cases be benign. For example, a ranula, sialolithiasis and/or infection. Tumors of the sublingual gland are very rare, but 90% are malignant and therefore malignancy should always be excluded in case of an asymptomatic swelling covered by intact mucosa.

Submandibular gland excision was performed on two patients using trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS). Complications such as the injury of marginal mandibular branch of facial nerve, ranula in the floor of the mouth, and postoperative hemorrhage were not observed. Visible cervical scar can be avoided and esthetic outcome can be expected by using this surgical modality.

The anatomy and physiology of the salivary glands in dogs and cats are briefly discussed. A salivary mucocele is due to leakage of saliva from the salivary gland or from its duct. Trauma is usually referred to as the underlying cause. Treatment of salivary mucoceles (cervical salivary gland cyst, ranula or pharyngeal mucocele) consists in surgical resection of the affected salivary gland.

Two infants presented with unilateral cystic swellings in the floor of the mouth as a result of imperforate submandibular ducts. This is thought to result from a congenital failure of canalization of the terminal end of the duct. Both cases responded to simple incision and decompression of the fluid-filled duct. Early treatment is important to avoid feeding difficulties and to prevent later complications such as ranula or sialadenitis.

This study was done to determine whether the sublingual gland ducts could be visualized and/or their function assessed by MR sialography and dynamic MR sialography and to elucidate the clinical significance of the visualization and/or evaluation of the function of sublingual gland ducts by clinical application of these techniques. In 20 adult volunteers, 19 elderly volunteers, and 7 patients with sublingual gland disease, morphological and functional evaluations were done by MR sialography and dynamic MR sialography. Next, four parameters, including the time-dependent changes (change ratio) in

Mucoceles are common in the minor salivary and sublingual glands. Sclerotherapy is a possible treatment strategy for mucoceles. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of sclerotherapy with promethazine hydrochloride injection in treating mucoceles. Thirty-seven patients were enrolled. Sclerotherapy was performed with promethazine hydrochloride injection (25mg/ml) through the mucosa. Patients were followed up at 1, 3, and 6 months after the last sclerotherapy. Clinical data were reviewed. The lesions (range 2-30mm in diameter) occurred on the ventral tongue tip (20 pati

INTRODUCTION: Mucoceles are cystic diseases of the oral mucosa. The most common are ranula and mococeles of the lower lip. Blandin and Nuhn mucoceles, which develop at the ventral side of the tongue, are rare benign lesions. They are often misdiagnosed and sometimes confused with ranula. The recommended treatment is a complete surgical excision of the gland.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe 5 clinical cases managed in service between 2009 and 2016. Clinical cases are presented in order to detail their clinical history, paraclinical and treatment.
RESULTS: The clinical appearance is a longit
