[Lyell's syndrome: study of a clinical case].

The Authors report a case of Lyell's syndrome. Previous administration of sulfadossine was identified as the precipitating cause of the syndrome. The clinical history and the treatment of the case are described. Two aspects of the latter were considered to be particularly important: a careful control of the hydroelectrolytic balance and positive action to favour the rapid re-epithelialization of the cutaneous area affected.

Research advances on postbiotics in promoting skin wound healing: mechanisms, formulations, and clinical translation.

Wound healing is a complex process involving different cell types, molecules and stages in the dermis, epidermis and associated microbiome. Chronic wounds caused by pressure, diabetes, or immunodeficiency often have huge economic and therapeutic costs. Postbiotics, in particular inactivated bacteria, cell components and metabolites, are emerging as novel treatments targeting the skin microbiome and provide precise treatment options for wound healing, inflammation, angiogenesis and re-epithelialization. We review the positive regulatory role of different microbial communities in skin healing; e

Collagen membrane loaded with doxycycline through hydroxypropyl chitosan microspheres for the early reconstruction of alkali-burned cornea.

Corneal alkali burn is one of the most devastating ophthalmic emergencies correlated with remarkable morbidity resulting in severe visual impairment. Appropriate intervention in the acute phase determines the eventual outcome for later corneal restoration treatment. Since the epithelium plays an essential role in inhibiting inflammation and promoting tissue repair, sustained anti-matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and pro-epithelialization are the prior remedies during the first week. In this study, a drug-loaded collagen membrane (Dox-HCM/Col) that could be sutured to overlay the burned cornea

Healing of the urethral plate after deep incision: does catheterization change the course of this process?

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the sequence of healing process as well as possible effects of stent placement on the healing process after deep urethral plate incision. METHODS: A deep urethral plate incision was done at the 12 o'clock position. After that, in the first group (n = 14) the anterior urethra was stented with a silicon catheter. Animals in the second group (n = 14) underwent the same incision procedure, however no stent was placed after this operation. All animals in both groups were again divided into three groups with respect to the follow-up period (7-14 and 21 days). Partia

[Role of skin immunity on wound healing].

The immune system of skin is consisted of different types of immune cells which distribute in epidermis and dermis. By adjusting the microenvironment of wound, these immune cells regulate the migration, proliferation, differentiation and other functions of epidermal cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts, thus taking part in re-epithelialization and formation of granulation tissue and having great influences on wound healing in the end. Acknowledging the interaction of these cells and identifying the targets that regulate the functions of immune cells will provide direction for improving th

[Multimodal therapy for peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum with topical cyclosporine].

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic disease. Clinically it shows a rapidly evolving painful ulceration with undermined violaceous wound edges. Peristomal PG is particularly resistant to treatment due to mechanical irritation. Two cases illustrate a multimodal therapeutic concept based on topical cyclosporine, hydrocolloid dressing and systemic glucocorticoids. In one patient re-epithelialization was attained after 7 weeks and the other patient experienced downsizing of the wound edges over 5 months.

Human papilloma virus proliferation in a healing burn.

A 4-year-old boy sustained a superficial burn to his finger at the site of a viral papilloma. The burn was treated conservatively. During re-epithelialization the human papilloma virus (HPV) incorporated its genome in the regenerating cells, leading to a verruca as large as the original burn. Diagnosis was reinforced by a history from the patient's mother. Complete resolution of this complication was achieved with topical therapy.

Inhibition of tumor necrosis factor improves conventional steroid therapy for Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis in a cohort of patients.

BACKGROUND: Systemic steroid therapies for Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) have been challenged because of their limited benefits. Whether additional tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α inhibition provides an optimized approach remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of TNF-α inhibition combined with a steroid to treat SJS/TEN and to identify potential biomarkers. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with SJS/TEN were recruited and divided into 2 groups: 10 patients received methylprednisolone and 15 patients received etanercept plus methylprednisolone.

Exosome laden oxygen releasing antioxidant and antibacterial cryogel wound dressing OxOBand alleviate diabetic and infectious wound healing.

Lack of oxygen, reduced vascularization, elevated oxidative stress, and infection are critical clinical hallmarks of non-healing chronic diabetic wounds. Therefore, delivering oxygen, inducing angiogenesis, and management of oxidative stress and infection may provide newer and improved therapeutic avenues for better clinical outcomes in diabetic wound healing. Here, we report the development and evaluation of an exosome laden oxygen releasing antioxidant wound dressing OxOBand to promote wound closure and skin regeneration in diabetic wounds. OxOBand is composed of antioxidant polyurethane (PU

Cyclosporine for Epidermal Necrolysis: Absence of Beneficial Effect in a Retrospective Cohort of 174 Patients-Exposed/Unexposed and Propensity Score-Matched Analyses.

Cyclosporine has shown promising results for mortality in patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis. However, available studies included only a small number of patients and did not include a validated and homogenous control group. We present the results from a retrospective monocentric study including 174 patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis during 2005-2016. Among them, 95 received cyclosporine (3 mg/kg/day) plus supportive care, and 79 received supportive care only. Both a traditional exposed/unexposed method and a propensity score-matchin

'See-saw' expression of microRNA-198 and FSTL1 from a single transcript in wound healing.

Post-transcriptional switches are flexible effectors of dynamic changes in gene expression. Here we report a new post-transcriptional switch that dictates the spatiotemporal and mutually exclusive expression of two alternative gene products from a single transcript. Expression of primate-specific exonic microRNA-198 (miR-198), located in the 3'-untranslated region of follistatin-like 1 (FSTL1) messenger RNA, switches to expression of the linked open reading frame of FSTL1 upon wounding in a human ex vivo organ culture system. We show that binding of a KH-type splicing regulatory protein (KSRP,

Cell-matrix interactions modulate interstitial collagenase expression by human keratinocytes actively involved in wound healing.

We reported that interstitial collagenase is produced by keratinocytes at the edge of ulcers in pyogenic granuloma, and in this report, we assessed if production of this metalloproteinase is a common feature of the epidermal response in a variety of wounds. In all samples of chronic ulcers, regardless of etiology, and in incision wounds, collagenase mRNA, localized by in situ hybridization, was prominently expressed by basal keratinocytes bordering the sites of active re-epithelialization indicating that collagenolytic activity is a characteristic response of the epidermis to wounding. Acellular Dermal Substitutes for Lining the Exenterated Orbit-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Outcomes.

Orbital exenteration reconstruction remains a major reconstructive challenge because of the orbit's complex anatomy and its close relationship with the paranasal sinuses, which predispose patients to delayed healing. Traditional approaches, such as secondary intention healing or split-thickness skin grafting, may result in prolonged epithelialization and can compromise timely prosthetic rehabilitation. Acellular dermal matrices (ADM) have emerged as biological scaffolds that provide immediate coverage of the defect while preserving an open orbital cavity suitable for prosthetic fitting. A syst

An integrated in vitro and in silico approach to evaluate the safety and wound healing potential of Dracocephalum moldavica L. seed oil.

Dracocephalum moldavica L. seed oil (DMS), obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction, has a chemical fingerprint dominated by unsaturated fatty acids and phytosterols, supporting anti-inflammatory and skin-protective relevance. This study evaluated the topical safety profile and functional plausibility of DMS as a dermocosmetic ingredient using a non-animal testing framework. Phototoxicity was assessed using the 3T3 NRU phototoxicity assay (OECD TG 432), and skin irritation was evaluated in a reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) model. Regenerative potential was examined using a keratinocyte scr

Chemical genetics of regeneration: Contrasting temporal effects of CoCl2 on axolotl tail regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) regulate transcriptional responses to injury stimuli that are critical for successful tissue regeneration. Previously we showed that HDAC inhibitor romidepsin potently inhibits axolotl tail regeneration when applied for only 1-minute postamputation (MPA). RESULTS: Here we tested CoCl2, a chemical that induces hypoxia and cellular stress, for potential to reverse romidepsin inhibition of tail regeneration. Partial rescue of regeneration was observed among embryos co-treated with romidepsin and CoCl2 for 1 MPA, however, extending the CoCl2 dosage window
