Rapid automatized naming (RAN) and reading fluency: implications for understanding and treatment of reading disabilities.

Fluent reading depends on a complex set of cognitive processes that must work together in perfect concert. Rapid automatized naming (RAN) tasks provide insight into this system, acting as a microcosm of the processes involved in reading. In this review, we examine both RAN and reading fluency and how each has shaped our understanding of reading disabilities. We explore the research that led to our current understanding of the relationships between RAN and reading and what makes RAN unique as a cognitive measure. We explore how the automaticity that supports RAN affects reading across developme

Neural deficits in second language reading: fMRI evidence from Chinese children with English reading impairment.

In alphabetic language systems, converging evidence indicates that developmental dyslexia represents a disorder of phonological processing both behaviorally and neurobiologically. However, it is still unknown whether, impaired phonological processing remains the core deficit of impaired English reading in individuals with English as their second language and how it is represented in the neural cortex. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the present study investigated the neural responses to letter rhyming judgment (phonological task) and letter same/different judgment (orthographic ta

Cross-linguistic universals in reading acquisition with applications to English-language learners with reading disabilities.

There is a considerable gap in English reading achievement between English-language learners and native speakers in the United States. Differentiation of whether English language learners' struggles are symptomatic of reading disability or related to second language acquisition is often challenging. These issues highlight the need for increased insight into reading development and disability in this population. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of cross-linguistic universals in reading acquisition, how reading disabilities manifest in various languages, and whether diagnost

Psychosocial factors and reading difficulties: students with reading difficulties drawn from a representative population sample.

In a representative sample of 2,464 Norwegian adolescents, aged 12-15 years, 7.8% (n= 191) reported reading difficulties (RD). No gender difference was found. Adolescents with RD were compared to classmates on psychosocial variables. In univariate analysis, RD adolescents report higher levels of depressive symptoms, more school stress, worried more about going to school, had lower school grades and lower attachment to parents than those without RD. They also scored lower on Global Self-worth and on Social Acceptance scales. Further, they reported reduced levels of psycho-functioning during the

Is a "Phoenician" reading style superior to a "Chinese" reading style? Evidence from fourth graders.

This study compared normally achieving fourth-grade "Phoenician" readers, who identify nonwords significantly more accurately than they do exception words, with "Chinese" readers, who show the reverse pattern. Phoenician readers scored lower than Chinese readers on word identification, exception word reading, orthographic choice, spelling, reading comprehension, and verbal ability. When compared with normally achieving children who read nonwords and exception words equally well, Chinese readers scored as well as these children on word identification, regular word reading, orthographic choice,

A reading level match study of nonword reading skills in poor readers with varying IQ.

This study evaluated the hypothesis that poor readers are characterized by poor nonword reading skills, but that a specific deficit, as opposed to a developmental lag, in nonword reading will be found only in subjects whose reading is discrepant from intellectual ability. To test this hypothesis, we measured nonword reading skills in 93 (64 male, 29 female) third-grade poor readers and 54 (37 male, 17 female) fifth-grade poor readers (with and without reading/IQ discrepancies) who were matched to 147 (81 male, 66 female) nondisabled first graders on word identification skills. Results showed t

Detection of young children in need of reading help. Evaluation of specific reading disability formulas.

To determine whether formula-based definitions of specific reading disability (SRD) were related to the actual classroom performance of children aged 7 1/2, the authors applied five definitions of SRD to a cohort of 243 children. The children were followed from birth and not selected on the basis of cognitive, reading, or academic performance criteria. The authors determined the concurrent validity of each of the formulas by comparing the prediction of each definition to whether the child received additional reading help in the classroom. Although the years behind method was significantly bett

Higher Short- and Long-Term Fluent Reading Abilities Following an Executive Functions-Based Reading Intervention Are Moderated by Executive Functions Improvement in Children With Reading Difficulties.

Previous studies have demonstrated how an executive functions-based reading training was related to improved reading and executive function abilities as well as changes in neural circuits underlying these abilities in children with reading disabilities and in typical readers. The executive components of this programme include visual attention, initiation, shifting/inhibition, speed of processing and working memory. Whether and which executive functions moderate these reading and cognitive effects in the short and long term remain elusive. This study aimed at assessing the short-term (immediate

Abnormal Developmental Trajectories in the Brain in Individuals With Reading Disability: Developmental changes in reading disability.

It is unknown how the brain supports reading development in individuals with reading disability (RD). In a cross-sectional study (i.e., children, adolescents, adults), we found an age-related shift in brain activation from posterior to anterior part of the left occipitotemporal (OT) area in typical readers, supporting orthographic specialization, while RD readers did not show such a developmental shift. Furthermore, RD readers did not show age-related increase in the left superior temporal gyrus as did the typical readers, suggesting persistent phonological deficits. On the other hand, RD read

How digital reading habits shape reading motivation and comprehension over time: Longitudinal associations in primary school.

Nowadays, children's reading habits extend beyond traditional printed texts, embracing new practices and forms through digital devices. The influence of such new digital reading habits on reading motivation and comprehension development remains largely underexplored. This study aimed to explore reciprocal causal paths between digital reading habits, reading comprehension and intrinsic reading motivation. To do so, we analyzed longitudinal data of 908 Spanish students from Grades 4 to 6. We estimated random-intercept and cross-lagged panel models to examine long-term associations between our ma

Children with and without reading difficulty value robot reading companions that are smart, supportive, and personalised.

As social robots are being increasingly deployed in educational settings, it is critically important to understand which design features make robots most likely to be accepted by children and to deliver benefits in education contexts. To deepen our understanding of young readers' expectations, needs, and desires for a robot that supports reading, we conducted co-design sessions followed by a semi-structured interview with children aged 5-9 years (30 children with typical reading and a case series of five children with poor reading, of which four were enroled in reading interventions at the tim

Analyzing the Effects of a Repeated Reading Intervention on Reading Fluency With Generalized Linear Mixed Models.

In the United States, only approximately one-third of students read at or above proficiency level. Moreover, the difference in reading proficiency of students is severely disproportionate for students with disabilities compared to students without disabilities. Reading fluency is a precursor for academic success and one of the six aspects of reading that contributes to effective reading skills. Many studies have examined the effectiveness of repeated reading to improve reading fluency. However, existing literature has mixed evaluations of whether repeated reading can be considered evidence-bas

Understanding the nature and severity of reading difficulties among students with language and reading comprehension difficulties.

This study investigated the presence of word reading difficulties in a sample of students in Grades 1-4 (n = 357) identified with language and reading comprehension difficulties. This study also examined whether distinct word reading and listening comprehension profiles emerged within this sample and the extent to which these groups varied in performance on cognitive and demographic variables. Findings showed that the majority of students (51%) with language and reading comprehension difficulties demonstrated significant risk in word reading (more than 1 SD below the mean), even though the par

Aphasia and acquired reading impairments: What are the high-tech alternatives to compensate for reading deficits?

BACKGROUND: People with aphasia (PWA) frequently present impairments in reading comprehension. Such impairments can be particularly debilitating due to the limitations and constraints they impose on everyday life. Recent technological advancements in the field of information and communication technologies offer many compensative tools for PWA. However, most technological tools are designed for patients with speech production impairments. Instruments addressing reading impairments associated with aphasia remain scarce and underrepresented in the scientific literature. AIMS: To conduct a state-

Global gray matter morphometry differences between children with reading disability, ADHD, and comorbid reading disability/ADHD.

Extensive, yet disparate, research exists elucidating structural anomalies in individuals with Reading Disability (RD) or ADHD. Despite ADHD and RD being highly comorbid, minimal research has attempted to determine shared patterns of morphometry between these disorders. In addition, there is no published research examining the morphometry of comorbid RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD). Hence, we conducted voxel-based morphometry on the MRI scans of 106 children, ages 8-12 years, with RD, ADHD, or RD/ADHD, and typically developing controls. We found right caudate and superior frontal regions in both RD and

Preliminary Report on Neuroanatomical Differences Among Reading Disabled, Nonverbally Gifted, and Gifted-Reading Disabled College Students.

Regional comparisons (cortical surface area and thickness) were performed on a well described sample of adults with reading disability alone (RD), nonverbal giftedness alone (G), and reading disability and nonverbal giftedness combined (GRD). These anatomical results are considered in relation to behavioral and functional work previously reported on this sample. GRD-RD regional differences were found in both hemispheres and were more common than GRD-G differences. Regional differences were found in the temporal, parietal, occipital and frontal lobes. While these data are preliminary given the

The effects of frequency altered feedback on reading comprehension abilities of normal and reading disordered children.

The effects of frequency altered feedback (FAF) on the reading comprehension levels and error types of normal children and children with reading disorders were examined. Participants read aloud third, sixth, and ninth grade level material in non-altered auditory feedback (NAF) and FAF conditions. Comprehension improved significantly when the reading disordered children read aloud under the FAF listening condition, regardless of the reading level. Significant differences did not occur in reading comprehension for the normal readers under NAF versus FAF conditions. Reading disordered children pr
