Quality of life and pain severity changes over time in patients with breast cancer who were referred for palliative oncology treatment in Indonesia: a hospital-based cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding quality of life (QOL) and changes in pain severity over time is important to quantify cancer patients' treatment outcomes. However, this information is limited, especially in lower-middle-income countries. This study aimed to prospectively assess QOL, QOL domains, and pain severity over time in patients with advanced breast cancer in Indonesia. METHODS: Women with advanced breast cancer (n = 160) who were referred to the palliative oncology unit were enrolled in the study. They completed the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QOL Questionnai

Dorsal root ganglion neurons with dichotomizing axons projecting to the hip joint and the knee skin in rats: possible mechanism of referred knee pain in hip joint disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients who have hip joint diseases sometimes complain of knee pain as well as hip joint area pain. However, the precise sensory innervation pattern and correlation of the sensory nerves of the hip joint and knee are unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons with dichotomizing axons projecting to both the hip joint and the knee skin in rats using double fluorescent labeling techniques, and to examine characteristics of the DRG neurons with dichotomizing axons using immunohistochemical staining for inflammatory neuropeptides such as ca

Dichotomizing sensory nerve fibers innervating both the lumbar vertebral body and the area surrounding the iliac crest: a possible mechanism of referred lateral back pain from lumbar vertebral body.

STUDY DESIGN: Animal study. OBJECTIVE: To determine the existence of dichotomizing sensory nerve fibers innervating both the lumbar vertebral body and the area surrounding the iliac crest (ASIC). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Elderly patients with osteoporosis sometimes experience lumbar vertebral fracture and may feel diffuse nonlocalized pain in the back, the lateral portion of the trunk, and the ASIC. The pattern of sensory innervation of vertebral bodies remains unclear. DRG neurons with dichotomizing axons have been reported and are thought to be related to referred pain. The purpose of t

Validation of the parent's postoperative pain measure with an age-appropriate reference pain scale for children 2-12 years old during a 14-day recovery after tonsillectomy: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Adenotonsillectomy is associated with severe postoperative pain. The parent's postoperative pain measure (PPPM), a 15-item instrument to measure a child's pain at home, has been validated with a seven-point faces scale in children 7-12 years and with the parents' global report of pain in children 2-6 years. AIMS: Our primary objective was to validate the PPPM with a recommended age-appropriate pain scale in children 2-12 years after adenotonsillectomy. Our secondary objective was to reduce the PPPM components and validate this reduced PPPM. METHODS: We recruited 319 children out

Dorsal root ganglion neurones with dichotomising afferent fibres to both the lumbar disc and the groin skin. A possible neuronal mechanism underlying referred groin pain in lower lumbar disc diseases.

Dorsal root ganglion neurones with dichotomising axons are present in several species and are considered to play a role in referred pain. Clinically, patients with lesions in the lower lumbar discs occasionally complain of pain in the groin. We investigated the existence of dichotomising afferent neurones projecting axons both to the lumbar disc and to the groin skin, using the double fluorescent-labelling technique in rats. We observed neurones labelled with a tracer applied at the ventral portion of the LS-L6 disc and another tracer placed on the groin skin in L1 and L2 dorsal root ganglia.

Does the efficacy of neurodynamic treatments depend on the presence and type of criteria used to define neural mechanosensitivity in spinally-referred leg pain? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether definite neural mechanosensitivity (NM) is required for neural mobilisations to be beneficial in people with spinally referred leg pain. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the efficacy of neural mobilisations in patients with spinally referred leg pain depends on the presence and type of criteria used to define NM. METHOD: PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PEDro and Science Direct were searched from 1980 to March 2020. Randomised controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of neural mobilisations on pain and disability in spinal

Test-Retest Reliability of the Generalized Pain Questionnaire in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Preliminary Reference Values for Non-Clinical and Several Clinical Samples.

INTRODUCTION: Generalized pain hypersensitivity is a characteristic feature in many different types of chronic pain. Recently, a 7-item self-reported Generalized Pain Questionnaire (GPQ) was developed to evaluate the presence and severity of generalized pain hypersensitivity in chronic pain patients. Here, we evaluate the test-retest reliability of the GPQ and report on preliminary reference values for various patient groups and healthy subjects. METHODS: Eighty-five patients diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) completed the GPQ twice over a 2-week interval. Relative and absolute indicat

Parasympathetic response in women with coronary vascular dysfunction during mental stress compared to those with non-cardiac chest pain and reference controls.

BACKGROUND: Coronary vascular dysfunction (CVaD) contributes to ischemia even in the absence of obstructive coronary artery disease. We hypothesize that abnormal autonomic reactivity to mental stress is a key pathophysiologic mechanism in CVaD compared to non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP) and reference control (RC) groups. METHODS: Seventy women (35 with CVaD diagnosed by coronary function testing, 19 with NCCP, and 16 RC) underwent mental stress testing (arithmetic and anger recall) in the Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System study. RC group was asymptomatic with no risk factors and normal exercise

Evaluation of acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis and diagnostic management of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome with special reference to infection/inflammation.

The evaluation of acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis and the diagnostic management of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome with special reference to infection and inflammation is well defined. Men with symptoms of acute bacterial prostatitis (NIH I) have to undergo urine analysis and culture of the urine. An initial imaging of the prostate is suggested to exclude prostatic abscess. In chronic bacterial prostatitis (NIH II) the 4- and/or the 2-glass test for white blood cell counts and culture are necessary. Culture of semen has a lower sensitivity but is recommended for evalua

Combination of computed tomography angiography with coronary artery calcium score for improved diagnosis of coronary artery disease: a collaborative meta-analysis of stable chest pain patients referred for invasive coronary angiography.

OBJECTIVES: Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has higher diagnostic accuracy than coronary artery calcium (CAC) score for detecting obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with stable chest pain, while the added diagnostic value of combining CCTA with CAC is unknown. We investigated whether combining coronary CCTA with CAC score can improve the diagnosis of obstructive CAD compared with CCTA alone. METHODS: A total of 2315 patients (858 women, 37%) aged 61.1 ± 10.2 from 29 original studies were included to build two CAD prediction models based on either CCTA alone

Effectiveness of a physiotherapist-led triage and treatment service on WAITing time for adults with musculoskeletal pain referred to Australian public hospital physiotherapy clinics: a protocol for the WAIT-less trial.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal pain is the second leading cause of disease burden in Australia, and there is a need to investigate new models of care to cope with the increasing demand for health services. This paper describes the protocol for a randomised controlled trial investigating whether a physiotherapist-led triage and treatment service is non-inferior for improving function at 6 months and superior for reducing treatment waiting times, compared with usual care for patients with musculoskeletal pain referred to public hospital outpatient physiotherapy clinics. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A t
