A Descriptive Study of the Pattern of Refractive Errors, Amblyopia Burden, and Effective Refractive Error Coverage Among Children Attending a Tertiary Hospital in Northern Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairment affects children's learning, development, and quality of life. Refractive errors (REs) are the most prevalent form of VI among ocular conditions, especially in children. They often begin in childhood and can progress significantly if left uncorrected, leading to complications such as amblyopia or long-term visual disability. Thus, this study was conducted to describe the patterns of REs, examine demographic and behavioral characteristics, and assess the burden of amblyopia and effective RE coverage among schoolchildren with REs attending the Ophthalmology Unit of

Optimization of an intraocular lens for correction of advanced corneal refractive errors.

Based on numerical 3D ray tracing, we propose a new procedure to optimize personalized intra-ocular lenses (IOLs). The 3D ray tracing was based on measured corneal elevation data from patients who suffered from advanced keratoconus. A mathematical shape description of the posterior IOL surface, by means of a tensor product cubic Hermite spline, was implemented. The optimized lenses provide significantly reduced aberrations. Our results include a trade-off study that suggests that it is possible to considerably reduce the aberrations with only minor perturbations of an ideal spherical lens. The

From unseen to seen: tackling the global burden of uncorrected refractive errors.

Worldwide, more than one billion people suffer from poor vision because they do not have the eyeglasses they need. Their uncorrected refractive errors are a major cause of global disability and drastically reduce productivity, educational opportunities, and overall quality of life. The problem persists most prevalently in low-resource settings, even though prescription eyeglasses serve as a simple, effective, and largely affordable solution. In this review, we discuss barriers to obtaining, and approaches for providing, refractive eye care. We also highlight emerging technologies that are bein

Short-duration transient visual evoked potential for objective measurement of refractive errors.

This study examined effects of uncorrected refractive errors (RE) in a short-duration transient visual evoked potential (SD t-VEP) system and investigated their role for objective measurement of RE. Refractive errors were induced by means of trial lenses in 35 emmetropic subjects. A synchronized single-channel EEG was recorded for emmetropia, and each simulated refractive state to generate 21 VEP responses for each subject. P100 amplitude (N75 trough to P100 peak) and latency were identified by an automated post-signal processing algorithm. Induced hypermetropia and myopia correlated strongly

Characteristics of peripheral refractive errors of myopic and non-myopic Chinese eyes.

Interest in peripheral refractive errors has increased as it was hypothesized that peripheral hypermetropia might provide a stimulus for axial elongation (Smith et al., 2005), this study was to determine relative peripheral refractive errors (RPRE) of the eyes of a group of Chinese children and adults. Central and peripheral (20 degrees , 30 degrees , 40 degrees at nasal, temporal, superior and inferior meridians of retina) refractive errors were obtained from cyclopleged eyes of 40 children and 42 adults with a Shin-Nippon auto-refractor. Only right eyes were considered. Central spherical equ
