Psychopathology in African unaccompanied refugee minors in Austria.

We assessed the prevalence of a range of psychopathology among African unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) in Austria. Additionally, the predictive value of war exposure on PTSD symptoms was examined. Forty-one URMs were assessed with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for children and adolescents, the Youth Self-Report, the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index and Facts About You. As expected, 56% of youth had at least one diagnosis by structured clinical interview. The most common diagnoses were adjustment disorder, PTSD and dysthymia. War affliction marginally predicted (p = 0.065) PTSD

Outbreak of measles and rubella in refugee transit camps.

In 2004, concurrent measles and rubella outbreaks occurred in four camps hosting 2767 Liberian refugees in Côte d'Ivoire. Sixty rash and fever cases were identified. From 19 January to 23 February 2004 (weeks 8-13), measles IgM testing showed that 61.1% were positive. The highest incidence rate (18.5%) of measles was observed in children aged <9 months. Ninety-three percent of children aged between 6 months and 15 years received a measles vaccine during week 13, but the rash and fever cases continued to occur. This prompted a systematic test for both measles and rubella IgM antibodies. Rubella

Assessment of issues facing immigrant and refugee families.

This article identifies the different problems immigrants and refugees face in the United States, especially socioeconomic and psychosocial concerns that often relate to the experience of migration. Traditional familial roles and responsibilities are frequently challenged, exacerbated by sociocultural differences and inadequate understandings between the new arrivals and the host country. Essential in assessments of immigrant and refugee families is evaluating resources for social, economic, and cultural integration; discriminating between realistic and unrealistic expectations; evaluating fam

Measles in Vietnamese refugee children in Hong Kong.

From September 1991-January 1992, there was a measles epidemic in an established refugee camp for 7000 Vietnamese 'Boat People' living in Hong Kong. This 16 week outbreak occurred against a backdrop of poor uptake of measles vaccination and overcrowded living conditions. Two hundred and sixty-two children were affected (155 boys, 107 girls); 235 children (89.7 %) were < 2 years old, age range 5-39 months. Children age 6-11 months had the highest crude attack rate (AR) of 54.3%. The highest age specific crude AR was 83.8% in children aged 14 months. Measles complications affected 234 (89.3%) ch

Afghan refugee issues in the U.S. social environment.

Since Afghan refugees began coming to the United States in the early 1980s, the Afghan community of the San Francisco Bay Area has become the largest in the United States. This population copes with a number of stressors that negatively affect their health and psychological well-being. Based on an ethnographic study, we focus on the social context in which Afghan refugees find themselves, describing Afghans' perceptions of their interactions with mainstream American citizens and health and social service providers. The theme running through all such interactions is information--its scarcity, c

Leprosy. Our Southeast Asian refugee experience.

In the past two years, we have diagnosed four cases of leprosy at the St Paul-Ramsey Hospital Dermatology Clinic. This is a markedly increased incidence for the state of Minnesota. All of these cases have been found among recently arrived Southeast Asian refugees not noted to have their disease by previous screening examinations. The purpose of this study is to report these four cases (two tuberculoid, one lepromatous, and one borderline leprosy) and to review the Southeast Asian Refugee Resettlement Program, focusing on medical screening programs. We recommend refugee health education, health

Investigating body image disturbance among Syrian refugees in northern Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbance (BID) affects physical and mental health, particularly in vulnerable populations like refugees. Syrian refugees in Jordan face unique challenges, including displacement and limited healthcare access, which may exacerbate BID. This study investigates BID, weight perception, and health behaviors among Syrian refugees in the Zaatari camp. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 487 Syrian refugees (61.4% males, 38.6% females) in the Zaatari camp between September and December 2022. Data collection involved Stunkard's silhouettes and a health and li

Attachment-related trauma markers and symptom severity in Afghan refugees.

BACKGROUND: Afghan refugees experience high levels of cumulative trauma and psychosocial adversity, yet attachment-related trauma has rarely been examined at the narrative level. Narrative attachment assessments may capture culturally embedded expressions of distress beyond post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-focused symptom models. AIMS: This study examined narrative attachment-related trauma markers in Afghan refugees receiving out-patient psychological treatment. It investigated whether trauma marker frequency differed between resolved and unresolved attachment representations and whethe

The Homeless Population: Medical Refugees in a Mature Trauma System.

INTRODUCTION: On any given day, there are >550,000 homeless persons in the United States. Little research has examined the relationship between the homeless population and traumatic injuries. We hypothesized that homeless trauma patients have a higher mortality compared to those who are not homeless. METHODS: The Pennsylvania Trauma Outcome Study database was retrospectively queried from 2003-2018 for all adult (age ≥15) patients admitted to trauma centers in Pennsylvania. Homelessness was defined as homeless on admission or homeless as their discharge status. Patient demographics, comorbidit

Traumatized Syrian Refugees with Ambiguous Loss: Predictors of Mental Distress.

Refugees from war zones often have missing significant others. A loss without confirmation is described as an ambiguous loss. This physical absence with simultaneous mental persistence can be accompanied by economic, social or legal problems, boundary ambiguity (i.e., uncertainty about who belongs to the family system), and can have a negative impact on mental health. The aim of this study was to identify sociodemographic and loss-related predictors for prolonged grief, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and somatization in treatment-seeking Syrian refugees with post-tr

Evaluation of Social Phobia among Syrian Refugees' Youth in Jordan.

Social phobia is one of the most common anxiety disorders in youth yet still under-recognized and undertreated. This study purposed to evaluate the level of social phobia and examine correlating selected socio-demographic factors (age, gender, marital status, working status, and educational level) among Syrian refugees' youth in Jordan. A cross-sectional, descriptive correlation design was selected to carry out this study. The convenience sample composed of 290 youth aged 15-25 years were recruited from Amman and Mafraq cities. The data was collected using a questionnaire which consists of soc

Reconstruction of firearm and blast injuries in Syrian war refugees.

BACKGROUND: War injuries differ from other injuries owing to the large tissue defects they cause and their high risk of contamination. As fragments scattered by high-energy firearms and explosives cause serious composite tissue damage, repair of such injuries is difficult and requires a long treatment period. We discuss the treatment methods used for injured Syrian War refugees admitted to our clinic and present the most effective repair methods for war-related tissue defects for each region of the body. METHODS: A total of 61 patients treated between June 2012 and April 2015 were retrospecti

Prolonged grief in refugees, parenting behaviour and children's mental health.

BACKGROUND: Many refugees experience bereavement, and as a result they suffer elevated rates of prolonged grief disorder. Evidence also indicates that elevated rates of psychological disturbance in refugee children can be associated with parental mental health. This study examined the extent to which prolonged grief disorder in refugees is associated with their parenting behaviour and in turn with their children's mental health. METHODS: This study recruited participants from the Building a New Life in Australia prospective cohort study of refugees admitted to Australia between October 2013 a

Complexities of conducting research in adolescent refugees resettling in Australia.

Adolescent refugees resettling in Australia are a vulnerable and marginalised population. Dedicated research to help better understand their health-care needs remains scarce. There are multiple complexities which may deter health professionals from conducting research with this population. Health-care system barriers, such as lack of adolescent- and refugee-specific health-care services, complicate comprehensive data collection. Limited investigator knowledge pertaining to culturally appropriate research in a population with limited English proficiency or a history of trauma can have an impact

Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection in Syrian refugees to Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Canada has accepted more than 25,000 Syrian refugees fearing persecution in their homeland. Canadian guidelines recommend screening recent refugees from high incidence countries for tuberculosis (TB) and latent TB infection (LTBI). The prevalence of TB in this population is unknown. A refugee clinic in Edmonton presented a unique opportunity to estimate prevalence of TB and LTBI in Syrian refugees arriving in Canada. METHODS: In January 2016, 100 consecutive Syrian refugees were screened for TB with clinical assessment and LTBI using QuantiFERON Gold In-Tube assay (QFT-GIT). Patie

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis among Syrian Refugees in Jordan: a Retrospective Study.

The aim of this study is to investigate cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) among Syrian refugees residing in Jordan. A total of 558 Syrian refugee patients were clinically diagnosed with cutaneous leishmaniasis during 2010-2016. For each patient, sex, age, location, and number of lesions were recorded. Of the total 558 CL cases among Syrian refugees, 514 (92.1%) were classified as imported, 14 (2.5%) as locally acquired infection, and 30 (3.4%) of cases unclassified due to lack of information. By gender, 306 (55%) were males and 252 (45%) were females. Ages ranged between 1 and 78 years (17.3 ± 16.3
