A Critical Review of the Incidence and Risk Factors for Finger Injuries in Rock Climbing.

Rock climbing is a popular sporting activity and indoor sport climbing has been accepted for inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games. The aim of this article is to critically review research on the incidence and risk factors associated with injuries during rock climbing. A semisystematic approach in reviewing literature on incidence and prevalence was applied. Articles were identified after searches of the following electronic databases: Discover, Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), PubMed, Embase, SPORTDiscus, and ScienceDirect. Despite methodological shortcomings of the studies contained within th

Running Injuries to the Knee.

Approximately one third of serious runners will incur an injury in a given year, and approximately one third of the injuries will involve the knee. Biomechanical studies on running reveal the tremendous cyclic forces to which the knee is subjected. There are several etiologic factors involved, including training errors, anatomic and biomechanical variations, and differences in shoes and running surfaces. Training errors, particularly rapid transitions in training, are responsible for two thirds of injuries. Knee injuries in runners must be approached with a thorough review of the training prog

Functional Bracing After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructions: A Review of the Current Literature.

UNLABELLED: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are increasingly common in pediatric and adolescent athletes, driven by rising participation in high-risk sports. Functional knee bracing (FKB) has been proposed as a strategy to reduce both initial injuries and reinjuries following ACL reconstruction (ACLR). The current review examines biomechanical and clinical evidence related to the use of FKB status post-ACLR, focusing on its potential in preventing ACL re-injury. Biomechanical studies suggest that FKB may reduce abnormal knee movements in controlled conditions, specifically anterior t

Arthroscopic Shoulder Stabilization in High School Football Players.

BACKGROUND: Destabilizing shoulder injuries are common in high school American football players; however, the rate of recurrent glenohumeral instability and return to play after arthroscopic labral stabilization surgery remains unknown. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of recurrent instability on return to competitive high school football after arthroscopic shoulder labral stabilization and capsulorrhaphy procedures. It was hypothesized that the instability rate would be greater in players with more years of eligibility remaining (YER) to play at the hig

"I found much more joy than I ever did as a player"- a qualitative study of the emotional journey of shattered dreams and new horizons with an ACL re-rupture in young active men.

BACKGROUND: Ipsilateral second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, are more common in males compared to females. An ACL re-rupture can imply both physical and psychological consequences for patients, with reports of lower objective and subjective outcomes after a re-rupture compared with primary ACL injury. This study aimed to explore young men's experiences of their first ACL injury, reconstruction and subsequent ACL re-rupture. METHODS: Eighteen males (19-33 years old) were interviewed with semi-structured interviews, which were recorded, transcribed, and analysed with qualitative co

Preseason Eccentric Strength Is Not Associated with Hamstring Strain Injury: A Prospective Study in Collegiate Athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Established risk factors for hamstring strain injuries (HSI) include older age and prior HSI. However, these are nonmodifiable and have a limited role in injury prevention. Eccentric hamstring strength is a common component of HSI prevention programs, but its association with injury is less clear. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine if eccentric hamstring strength was prospectively associated with HSI among collegiate athletes, while controlling for sex, age, and prior HSI. We hypothesized that athletes with lower eccentric hamstring strength or greater between-limb strength

Static or dynamic repair of chronic lateral ankle instability. A prospective randomized study.

In a prospective study, 82 patients with 89 chronic lateral unstable ankles were randomly allocated to either static (Group S) or dynamic (Group D) reconstruction. For static reconstruction a procedure involving the distal part of the peroneus brevis tendon was used. The bore holes in the lateral malleolus were placed at the insertions of the original ligaments. For dynamic reconstruction the anterior one-half of the peroneus brevis tendon was used. On muscular contraction the split tendon will slide through a bore canal in the lateral malleolus. Theoretically, both procedures can stabilize th

Identifying sex-specific injury predictors as a key factor in maintaining optimal physical activity levels.

BACKGROUND: Optimal physical activity is known to reduce cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine system diseases and, as a consequence, improve quality of life. An important risk factor for reinjuries during normal exercise is the initial connective tissue pathology. The variety of clinical dysplastic manifestations significantly complicate the timely diagnosis of this comorbidity. AIM: To establish pathognomonic sex-specific dysplasia phenotypes that indicate a particular sensitivity to physical exertion. METHODS: The study involved 117 participants with recurrent musculoskeletal injuries

Effects of ligament repair on laxity and creep behavior of an early healing ligament scar.

BACKGROUND: Previous clinical studies have reported that conservatively managed medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries remained unstable 9 years post injury with subjective complaints of muscle weakness, reinjuries, and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Animal studies have also reported that healing MCLs were weaker and more lax than controls. Therefore, our purpose was to study the early effects of ligament repair on scar laxity, creep, and creep recovery in a rabbit model of bilateral medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury. METHODS: Each rabbit had one MCL cut in midsubstance which was not

Delayed Onset of Subclavian Artery Pseudoaneurysm With Brachial Plexus Compression Following Gunshot Wound Injury.

Early diagnosis of brachial plexus injuries is crucial to prevent long-term morbidity and improve outcomes. We present a unique case of delayed onset of brachial plexus compression two months following a traumatic gunshot injury causing multiple injuries including a T1 vertebral body comminuted fracture and pneumothorax. The patient experienced significant pain and progressive neurological examination changes during follow-up visits, and thus duplex ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) angiography were performed, which demonstrated a left subclavian artery pseudoaneurysm. This was managed o

The Multidisciplinary Approach to Occupational Low Back Pain and Disability.

Chronic disability generates most of the growing costs of occupational low back injuries. When back problems persist for more than a few months, traditional diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are rarely curative. Beyond the challenges of physical impairment, disabling back pain is commonly complicated by psychosocial issues, including depression, fear of reinjury, family discord, and vocational dissatisfaction. The biopsychosocial complexity of chronic disability often demands integrated care from physicians, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, and vocational counselors. In

Isolated Avulsion of the Distal Head of the Adductor Magnus: A Case Report.

In the present case, we describe the first reported instance of a noncontact distal adductor magnus avulsion injury in a collegiate Division I football player. A 22-year-old male player initially presented with an acute posterolateral corner injury with partial thickness tears of the fibular collateral ligament (FCL), biceps femoris tendon (BFT), and popliteus tendon (PT). Appropriate management was completed. Two months later, without contact or a specific inciting event during gameplay, his condition worsened to an acute full-thickness tear of the ischiocondylar (hamstring) portion of the ad

Lung Injury Induces Alveolar Type 2 Cell Hypertrophy and Polyploidy with Implications for Repair and Regeneration.

Epithelial polyploidization after injury is a conserved phenomenon recently shown to improve barrier restoration during wound healing. Whether lung injury can induce alveolar epithelial polyploidy is not known. We show that bleomycin injury induces alveolar type 2 cell (AT2) hypertrophy and polyploidy. AT2 polyploidization is also seen in short term ex vivo cultures, where AT2-to-AT1 transdifferentiation is associated with substantial binucleation due to failed cytokinesis. Both hypertrophic and polyploid features of AT2 cells can be attenuated by inhibiting the integrated stress response usin

Evaluation and Management of the Contact Athlete's Shoulder.

Shoulder injuries are common in contact athletes and vary in severity because of the required complex interplay of shoulder stability and range of motion for proper function. Pathology varies based on sport but most commonly includes shoulder instability, acromioclavicular injuries, traumatic rotator cuff tears, and brachial plexus injuries. Acute management ranges from reduction of shoulder dislocations to physical examination to determine the severity of injury. Appropriate radiographs should be obtained to evaluate for alignment and fracture, with magnetic resonance imaging commonly being n
