Pathways towards different long-term outcomes after naturalistic psychotherapy.

This study suggests some potential pathways leading towards maintained gains or further growth versus deterioration after naturalistic psychotherapy with experienced clinicians. This is explored in a way that transcends specific theoretical orientations. Sixteen therapies, all showing reliable improvement on Outcome Questionnaire 45.2 (OQ-45) at treatment termination but varying in later post-therapy development, were included in this study. Building on previous content and correlational analyses, individual cases were explored qualitatively in search for developmental patterns of potential re

Identifying transparency in physician communication.

OBJECTIVE: To categorize physician communication demonstrating understanding of what patients want to know and skill in conveying that information. Physicians underestimate how much information patients want and patients rarely seek information during clinic visits. Transparent communication is advocated to facilitate patient understanding and support autonomy, informed decision-making and relationship development. METHODS: Analysis and coding of 263 audiotaped interactions between 33 primary care physicians and their patients in eight community-based, primary care clinics in Washington State

New reproductive technologies, genetic counselling and the standing of the fetus: views from Germany and Israel.

This paper reports findings from a comparative study of Israeli and German genetic counsellors' perceptions of the moral standing of the fetus. Data collected through in-depth interviews with counsellors in both countries (N=32) are presented, and their moral practices are analysed. The paper's findings suggest that while German counsellors perceive the fetus as an autonomous being and debate the particular biological stages through which this autonomy is acquired; Israeli counsellors do not consider the moral status of the fetus independently of its relations with its family hence, deploying

"Beggars can't be choosers": Exploring service users' perspectives on charitable meal services while experiencing homelessness.

Charitable meal services are an essential source of nourishment for many people experiencing homelessness (PEH), yet little research has examined how everyday organizational practices shape experiences of power, dignity, and participation within these settings. Guided by the work of Paulo Freire, this critical ethnography explored how power is enacted and experienced within charitable meal services for PEH in two mid-sized Canadian cities. Data were collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews conducted between September 2023 and April 2024. Participants described c

Parental Attachment and Mental Health Literacy in Young Adults: The Mediational Role of Emotional Regulation on Well-Being and Psychopathological.

Entering higher education can represent significant challenges to the adaptation of young students. Supportive family relationships and mental health literacy can act as protective factors, favoring regulatory mechanisms that promote adaptive experiences. This study aims to analyze the role of attachment to parents in well-being and psychopathological symptoms, as well as the role of mental health literacy in these outcomes, testing the mediating role of emotional regulation in the above associations. The sample consisted of 2258 young adults aged 18 to 35, collected using a random probabilist

Psychological aspects in neuromuscular patients: case series.

The management of patients with neuromuscular diseases requires a multidisciplinary approach that integrates medical care with targeted psychological support. Respiratory difficulties, often treated with non-invasive ventilation (NIV) are accompanied by mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, which can compromise treatment adherence and quality of life. In our Unit, we performed psychological assessment from the first visit, using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) scale to evaluate the patients, and initiate where necessary, psychological support, also via telemedicine. We prese

Hippotherapy in neurodevelopmental disorders: a narrative review focusing on cognitive and behavioral outcomes.

Hippotherapy (HT) is a rehabilitative tool inducing psychological and motor improvements using human-horse interaction. HT provides sensory stimulation to the rider through the rhythmic and repetitive movements of the horse, facilitating communication between patients and healthcare professionals, favoring the establishment of a therapeutic alliance. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the effects of HT treatment on cognitive-behavioral processes in neurodevelopmental disorders. We screened studies published between 2002 and 2020 on PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and Web of Sciences databases

An exploratory study of how young people experience and perceive living with type 1 diabetes during late adolescence and emerging adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Suboptimal glycemic control and psychosocial challenges are significant concerns for adolescents and emerging adults (collectively young people) with type 1 diabetes. Knowledge about young peoples' attitudes towards living with type 1 diabetes is inadequate, but the issue is important in the development of strategies to improve glycemic control and psychosocial well-being. This study explored young peoples' perceptions of living with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: An exploratory, qualitative design was employed. Data were collected through five participatory workshops with 19 young peop

The Effects of Autonomy-Enhancing Therapy for Eating Disorders: Protocol for a Single-Case Experimental Multiple Baseline Design.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) remain challenging to treat effectively, with low recovery percentages and high relapse rates. This study protocol explores autonomy-enhancing therapy as a therapeutic adjunct to existing day care treatment in the last phase of treatment. Autonomy-enhancing therapy is aimed at improving autonomy-connectedness: the capacity for self-steering while connected to others, which encompasses self-awareness, sensitivity to others, and the capacity for managing new situations. Higher autonomy-connectedness has been associated with improved ED recovery and lower relaps

Exploring the reasons behind induced abortion among Iranian couples: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Induced abortion remains a significant reproductive health issue in Iran, shaped by complex socio-economic, cultural and legal factors. Despite its importance, limited evidence exists on the underlying motivations for seeking abortion in a context of restrictive laws and pronatalist policies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the reasons underlying couples' decisions to seek induced abortion within the constraints of the current legal framework. DESIGN: Qualitative interview study, co-designed with couples with a history of induced abortion. METHODS: We conducted semi-stru

Addressing Autonomy Risks in Generative Chatbots with the Socratic Method.

Autonomy is a fundamental ethical principle in artificial intelligence (AI) ethics. Current discussions regarding autonomy-related risks in human-AI interaction, as well as potential mitigation strategies, have mainly focused on recommendation systems and algorithmic decision-making systems. However, systematic analyses of the autonomy issues posed by newly emerging generative AI or chatbots (such as ChatGPT) remain scarce. This paper aims to bridge this gap and proposes a Socratic method-based chatbot, herein designated SocrAI, as a potential countermeasure informed by recent technological ad

Despair is Not Hopelessness: Autonomy and Behavioral Interventions for Deaths of Despair.

The term 'deaths of despair' refers to suicide, drug overdoses, and alcohol-related mortality in the context of concern about rising mortality rates. This paper employs a philosophical distinction between despair and hopelessness, and their positive counterparts, hope and hopefulness, to examine how behavioral public policy can offer tools to reduce these deaths and what role autonomy plays in such contexts. The paper introduces a further distinction within hopelessness (desiderative and doxastic) each affecting autonomy in different ways, depending on whether desires, beliefs or both are comp

Sociotropy and autonomy: the nature of vulnerability.

Sociotropy and autonomy are 2 personality dimensions related to an individual's vulnerability to depression (A. T. Beck, 1983). The Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (D. A. Clark, R. A. Steer, A. T. Beck, & L. Ross, 1995) and the Personal Style Inventory (C. J. Robins et al., 1994) were developed to assess these personality dimensions independent of each other. The present study is an examination of the relationship between the 2 scales and an attempt to specify the various factors that emerge when the items of the 2 scales are integrated. Participants (N = 514) responded to the Personal Style Invento

Mediational links among parenting styles, perceptions of parental confidence, self-esteem, and depression on alcohol-related problems in emerging adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is often found to be comorbid with alcohol-related problems. Parental overprotection, which may be of particular importance during emerging adulthood, has been linked to internalizing symptoms in offspring. This article evaluates the impact of parenting styles and parental confidence in their offspring on an internalizing pathway to alcohol-related problems through self-esteem and depression. METHOD: Mediational links were tested among parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive), parental confidence (overprotection, autonomy), self-esteem, depression, and

Scapegoated communities, shared struggles: A call for solidarity with people who use drugs and queer and trans people.

Efforts to control, repress, and punish drug use and queer and trans existence are rising as right-wing extremism becomes increasingly mainstream. These connected efforts are seen through the stifling of bodily autonomy and agency using criminal-legal, biomedical and political apparatuses, and have been executed similarly for people who use drugs and queer and trans people alike. This is most notable for those who exist at the intersection of these communities. Both groups have withstood attempts at manufacturing internal hierarchies - always at the expense of those who are already most margin
